The seven weekday planets in their natural-speed-order (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, then Rāhu and Ketu added at the borders) make a 9-planet sequence. The 27 Nakṣatras cycle through 9 lords with 3 Nakṣatras per lord. But the order of Nakṣatra-lordship is not the weekday-order. It is: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus.
Where does the reordering come from? Larsen at lines 611-630 walks through the derivation: the weekday-order is modified in 3 steps by node-interventions that "eclipse and change the order."1 The reordering is not arbitrary — it carries cosmological content about how the lunar-stations carry karma-flow distinct from how the calendar-days carry it.
Starting position — the 9 planets in natural weekday order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu.
Step 1 — The first three (Sun, Moon, Mars) establish dharma in their natural order. Then Rāhu interferes — bringing the first change in the scheme by inserting itself between Mars and the next planet-group. New order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Ketu.
Step 2 — Two reversals happen, caused by the two nodes again. The first three (Sun-Moon-Mars) cannot be touched — reversing them would reverse dharma itself. Mercury and Jupiter (following Rāhu) reverse positions. Then Venus exchanges places with Saturn-and-Ketu-as-a-block. New order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, Ketu, Venus.
Step 3 — One final reversal. Saturn (in its newly-found position after the Step-2 swap) exchanges places with Mercury. Final order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus.
This 9-lord sequence then cycles three times across the 27 Nakṣatras:
The cosmological reasoning is in the etymology of node-action. Rāhu is the grasper-head (the demon who tried to drink the amṛta and was beheaded by Viṣṇu, leaving an immortal head). Ketu is the body-without-head (the rest of the demon's body, also immortal but headless). The nodes are the eclipse-causers — they swallow the Sun (during solar eclipses) and Moon (during lunar eclipses). In Vedic cosmology, the nodes are the karma-modification points — they don't move karma forward; they interrupt its flow and redirect it.
The 3-step node-interruption-and-reversal in the Nakṣatra-lordship derivation is the cosmological-claim that Nakṣatra-flow is different from calendar-flow because the karma-flow is interrupted three times by node-action between the calendar-position and the Nakṣatra-position. The Vāra (calendar) carries karma in one order; the Nakṣatra (Moon-station) carries karma in a different order because the karma-flow is intercepted by Rāhu-Ketu modifications.
The practitioner who memorizes the 9-lord sequence without the derivation has information without architecture. The practitioner who understands the derivation can re-derive the order from first principles if memory fails — and more importantly understands why nodes appear so frequently in Nakṣatra-affliction-analysis. The nodes are not just one-of-9-planets in the Nakṣatra-system; they are the operators-of-the-sequence.
You are sitting at a desk and a student has asked you to explain why the Nakṣatra-lords follow the order they do. The standard textbook will tell them the order. The Larsen-tradition will walk them through the derivation.
You take a piece of paper. You write the 9 planets in weekday order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu. "This is the calendar-order — the order of weekday-speed."
You cross out Rāhu and Ketu at the end. You insert Rāhu between Mars and Mercury: "The first change. Rāhu interrupts after Mars because the first three — Sun, Moon, Mars — establish the dharma-foundation and cannot be touched. Rāhu enters at position 4."
You walk through Step 2 — Mercury-Jupiter reverse, Venus-Saturn-Ketu swap — explaining each reversal as node-action: "The nodes act in pairs. Two reversals in step 2 because both nodes are now in play."
Step 3 — Saturn-Mercury exchange: "The third and final reversal. Saturn in its new post-step-2 position trades with Mercury. The order is now Sun-Moon-Mars-Rāhu-Jupiter-Saturn-Mercury-Ketu-Venus."
The student now has the order and the architecture. They can re-derive it. They understand that the Nakṣatra-Mercury-Ketu-Venus tail (Aśleṣā-Jyeṣṭhā-Revatī lorded by Mercury; Mūlā-Maghā-Aśvinī lorded by Ketu; P.Phalgunī-Bharaṇī-P.Aṣāḍha lorded by Venus) is structurally end-of-sequence — Nakṣatras whose lords come last in the node-modified flow.
The derivation is taught once. The order is used daily.
The derivation is stated at lines 611-630 in three explicit steps with Larsen's narration of each step's cosmological-reasoning. Tables 3 and 4 (lines 592-604, 619-630) provide the start-order and 3-step-modification visualization. The derivation is attributed to the Rath-lineage transmission ("The tradition teaches"). No alternative-derivation is offered; this is presented as the canonical lineage-position.
The 3-step-derivation is one of several possible accounts of how the 9-Nakṣatra-lord-order is generated. Other accounts: the order is given by classical scripture (Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śastra has the order without derivation); the order corresponds to Vimśottari-Dashā year-length-ratios (Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rāhu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20 — summing to 120); the order is empirically-verified-and-back-derived by ancient practitioners.
Larsen's derivation has the advantage of structural-coherence — it tells you why the order is what it is, not just what it is. The disadvantage is that it is one cosmological-narrative among possible ones; other lineages may derive differently.
Most Vedic astrology textbooks state the Nakṣatra-lord-order without derivation. Larsen's stepwise-derivation is distinctive. Pai's Research on Nakshatras gives the order but does not derive it. Kurczak/Fish's Art and Science uses the order operationally without derivation. DiCara's 27 Stars, 27 Gods gives each Nakṣatra-lord without architectural-derivation. Foss's per-graha mantra-volumes use the Nakṣatra-lordships as background without derivation.
The convergence among all sources: the order itself is settled. Aśvinī = Ketu; Bharaṇī = Venus; etc. No source disagrees on the order. The divergence: only Larsen offers a structural-derivation, and the derivation is via Rath-lineage transmission. This makes Larsen's contribution the architectural-articulation of what the other sources accept as given. The vault preserves this — the architectural-articulation is operationally useful even when the conclusion is field-settled.
The 3-step node-modification of a base-order is structurally analogous to how secondary processes modify primary sequences in two other domains.
biology: Post-Transcriptional RNA Modification — molecular biology has established that the gene-to-protein flow is not a simple transcription. The primary RNA transcript from a gene is modified through multiple post-transcriptional steps (5' capping, splicing of introns, 3' polyadenylation, and various base-modifications) before the mature mRNA is exported to the cytoplasm. The base-sequence is given by the DNA; the operational sequence that the ribosome translates is the modified-post-transcription-mRNA. The structural parallel to Larsen's 3-step node-modification of the weekday-order to produce the Nakṣatra-lord-order is direct: a base-sequence (DNA / weekday-order) goes through node-mediated modifications (post-transcriptional editing / Rāhu-Ketu interventions) to produce the operational-sequence (mRNA / Nakṣatra-lord-order). The cross-domain insight neither lineage alone produces: the apparatus of node-as-modifier-of-base-flow is a general-organizing principle that biology has rediscovered at the molecular scale and Vedic cosmology asserts at the celestial scale. Both apparatuses recognize that the operational order differs from the base order and that specific operators (nodes / modification-enzymes) generate the difference. The vault holds the parallel because it makes Larsen's derivation intelligible as one instance of a deeper structural-principle rather than as an isolated astrological-curiosity. The same logic that explains why nodes modify the Nakṣatra-lord-sequence also explains why splicing modifies the gene-to-protein flow — both are intervention-operators on default-order flow. The biological-mechanism is empirically-established; the cosmological-mechanism is structurally-isomorphic and may operate via different but analogous processes.
history: Textual Transmission and Redaction — historical-philology has established that texts transmitted across generations are systematically modified by redactors who intervene in the base-text at specific points to produce the final-received-version. The Documentary Hypothesis in Biblical scholarship identifies the J/E/P/D source-strands and their later redactional integration; Homeric scholarship identifies the Alexandrian-redactors; classical-Indian textual scholarship identifies the layered-redactions of the Mahābhārata and Purāṇas. The base-sources exist; the operational-text is the redacted-integrated-version that diverges from the base-sources in specific traceable ways. The structural parallel to Larsen's Nakṣatra-lord-derivation is direct: weekday-order (base) is modified by node-operators (redactors) to produce the Nakṣatra-lord-order (operational text). The cross-domain insight: both Vedic-cosmology and textual-transmission recognize that fixed sequences develop modifications through identifiable operations and that reconstructing the base-sequence requires understanding the modification-operators. Historical-philology has developed methodology for reversing the redactional-layer to recover base-sources; Larsen's Nakṣatra-derivation works in the forward direction (showing how the base becomes the modified) but the same methodological-discipline operates in both. The Vault holds the parallel because it provides epistemic-context for how to evaluate Larsen's derivation — not as scriptural-authority but as a traditional-articulation of how the modification-operator system works. The derivation can be tested for internal-coherence the same way redactional-hypotheses in textual scholarship are tested: does it explain the observed-pattern parsimoniously? Larsen's derivation does — it produces the exact 9-lord sequence in 3 well-defined steps with internally-consistent rules.
The Sharpest Implication
If the 3-step-derivation captures real-structural-content about how karma-flow is mediated by nodes (rather than being mnemonic-only), then nodes operate as systemic-operators on flow in the Vedic-apparatus more broadly than usually appreciated. The implication: anywhere a default-order would be expected and the actual-order differs, look for node-mediated modification. This is testable: are there other Vedic-apparatus features where base-orders differ from operational-orders, and do the differences trace to node-action? If yes, the node-as-systemic-operator is a generalizable principle; if no, the Nakṣatra-derivation is special-case-only. The principle if validated would deepen how nodes are read across the apparatus — not just as graha-placements in a chart but as flow-modifiers throughout the system.
