A Whale in a Warehouse Sketch

Santiago Calatrava, commissioned in 1983 to design the façade and loading-bay doors for an ordinary clothing warehouse in Germany, sat down with watercolors and no clear plan and let his hand wander. A beached whale showed up on the page. He kept going, and the whale became the warehouse itself — its mouth the loading-bay door. On the margin, he wrote: "the building as a living organism." Staring at his own sketch, the whale's eye caught his attention as its own separate idea, and the eye became the actual mechanism: folding doors that raised in the curved shape of an eyelid.1

Nothing about that sequence was planned in advance. The final, buildable design — a working industrial door — emerged from a chain of free association that started with an animal that has nothing literally to do with warehouses.

Trained for Both Halves of the Problem

Calatrava's route to this method wasn't accidental. After architecture school, he felt he lacked a large enough vocabulary to assert real creative control over his own buildings — client demands, budgets, and site constraints tend to swallow an architect's personal style whole. So he did something unusual: went back to school for a civil engineering degree, specifically to understand the actual physical limits of what a structure could do, including his early ambition to design buildings capable of literal movement, informed by NASA's foldable space-mission hardware.2

By the time he began practicing, he had both halves most architects only have one of — the engineer's grasp of what's structurally possible, and an artist's instinct for image and metaphor. Nobody had taught him how to actually fuse the two into a working creative process. He built that process himself, starting with the warehouse.

The Method, Generalized

The Ernsting warehouse wasn't a one-time trick. As commissions grew larger and more consequential — a decade or more from first sketch to finished building, with every kind of institutional pressure able to intervene along the way — Calatrava returned to and refined the same basic sequence.3

Always beginning with drawing by hand rather than computer modeling, specifically because the screen interrupted the dreamlike, unconscious contact his pencil or brush maintained with the emerging idea. A single project could eventually produce hundreds of drawings, usually starting from a feeling or emotion, moving to a vague image, then slowly hardening into something buildable — most of his free associations rooted in nature: plants, human figures, skeletal structures, always tied back to the actual landscape the building would sit in.4

Analytical Case Study: A Bird Over Lake Michigan

Asked to design an addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, what came to Calatrava first — before any structural thinking — was the image of a bird about to take flight. That image went through his full sketching process and came out the other end as the building's actual engineering: two enormous, ribbed panels forming the roof, opening and closing in response to sunlight, giving the finished structure the look of a prehistoric bird about to launch itself over the lake.5

The case matters specifically because it shows the free-association method surviving contact with genuine structural and mechanical complexity. A moving roof responsive to sunlight is a real engineering problem, not a decorative flourish — and the image that generated it (a bird) was never intended, at the moment it first appeared on paper, to solve any engineering problem at all. The image came first. The engineering followed from what the image demanded.

Cultivated Dissatisfaction

The single greatest threat to this whole process, in Calatrava's own account, is the years-long gap between the first inspired sketch and the finished building — enough time for the original vision to go flat, for the energy behind it to leak away. His countermeasure is deliberate and slightly extreme: maintain constant, active dissatisfaction with the current version of the drawings, treating them as never quite finished, always improvable.6

That discipline cost him real work — wiping out months of drawings when a design started to feel dead rather than alive — and required real courage on top of the patience it obviously demanded. But it's what kept a project that could span a decade from calcifying partway through into something rigid and lifeless.

Time as an Ally, Not an Enemy

Calatrava's closing principle inverts the ordinary relationship most people have with a slow timeline. Rather than treating the years a project takes as a cost to be minimized, he came to treat slowness as a virtue — deliberately taking pleasure in the long research process, the gradual, organic growth of an idea over time, rather than rushing toward a premature resolution just to relieve the discomfort of not being finished yet.7 Looking back from a completed project, he found, the extra months or years spent almost never registered as painful in retrospect — an illusion of the present that dissolves once the work exists.

Why He Trusted the Feeling Was Coming From Outside Him

Looking back across a career of these projects, Calatrava reported a specific, striking sensation: the process felt less like something he had invented through his own imagination, and more like nature itself had led him to it — an organic, almost inevitable-feeling method rather than a personal technique he'd consciously assembled.8

Whether or not that sensation is literally accurate, it's diagnostically useful: a method that's been fully internalized often stops feeling like a method at all, and starts feeling like simply how things are done — which is itself a rough signal that a practice has moved from effortful technique into something closer to instinct.

Calatrava's biography, the Ernsting warehouse commission, and the Milwaukee Art Museum addition are all documented, publicly known projects, and Greene's account of his working method is consistent with Calatrava's own public statements about his process.

Open question: the method depends heavily on genuine drawing skill developed since childhood — Calatrava could sketch as fast as he could think. Greene doesn't address whether the free-association technique transfers to someone without comparable draftsmanship, or whether the drawing skill itself is a prerequisite the strategy quietly assumes.
