A lion is lying in the grass, looking around. It is not asleep. It is fully alive, fully vitalized, every muscle intact. But it is doing nothing — at rest, idling, inert. Then a moment comes: the hunt, the fight. The same lion that was lying still explodes into motion, all that stored power released at once.1
That lion is Nun and Nunet. They are the wave-energy of creation — the energy that has the full potential to bring everything into being, but which, until it is activated, just hums, idling, inert.1 In the creation sequence they come fourth: after the black substance (Ka-Kayet), after the breathing that vitalizes it (Hehu-Hehut), the vibration escalates into waves — energy moving back and forth through the now-living substance.2 Nun and Nunet are those waves. They are the energy-for-movement, the charged potential that the radiant spheres of Ra-Raet will be born out of.
This page looks closely at that fourth pair. (For the full eight, see the Kemennu Ogdoad and the Agdwad Eight.)
Nun and Nunet (also written Nu and Nut, Noon and Nunet) are the wave-energy contained within the black substance of space.3 Mainstream Egyptology renders Nun as the primeval waters. Odwirafo's reading specifies the cosmological role more precisely: not literal water, but wave-energy — electromagnetic-style waves of energy moving through the dark medium.3
Two pieces of the name carry the doctrine. First, the n sound itself: the humming, inert sound. Like a car idling before it accelerates, the n is energy present in potential but not yet released — "nu, nu," the sound of something charged and waiting.4 Second, nun / nin means to be inert, to be inactive — not weary, but at rest with full potential, exactly the lion lying down.1 And in Akan, nunu means to stir — so Nun-Nunet is the stirring energy of the black substance, the thing that makes a still medium begin to move.5
The iconography matches. The Medutu (hieroglyphs) show wavy lines — the wave-pattern — held inside a vessel or urn, with the sign for the overarching sky above. The reading: contained within the blackness (the vessel, the sky-substance) is wave-energy, male and female, Nun and Nunet.6 The container is Ka-Kayet; the waves inside it are Nun-Nunet.
The sequence makes a fine distinction that is easy to miss. There is a difference between being alive and being able to move.7
After Hehu-Hehut, the black substance is breathing — vitalized, alive, vibrating. But vibration is not yet directed energy. The doctrine uses a sharp image: a paraplegic person is breathing and alive, fully vital, but cannot get up and move.7 Vitality is real; the capacity for movement is something additional. So after life comes Nun-Nunet — the wave-energy that gives the living substance something to move with.7
This is why the wave-energy is "inert" rather than "active." At this stage the energy exists, it is charged, it has the potential to bring everything into being — but it has not yet been concentrated into anything. It is the lion lying down: maximum stored power, zero current output.1 The waves move back and forth through the substance, building, and only when they escalate past a threshold do they generate the spheres of fire and light that are Ra-Raet.2 Nun-Nunet is the loaded spring. It is everything that is about to happen, held in reserve.
The doctrine is precise about the parentage this creates: because Ra-Raet are born out of the wave-energy, Nun and Nunet are named the father and mother of Ra and Raet — Ra calls Nun his father and Nunet his mother.8 The wave-energy pair are, genealogically, the parents of the creator.
This page supplies the charged-potential phase — the loaded reserve that sits between vitality and radiant emergence.
It receives from Hehu and Hehut (the breathing escalates into these waves) and it gives birth, in the sequence, to Ra-Raet. It is the wave-stage of the boiling-water model in the Kemennu Ogdoad — the water sloshing in coherent waves just before the bubbles form. And it pairs with Ka-Kayet as content-to-container: the waves are the energy inside the black substance, which is why the iconography draws them as wave-lines within a vessel.
Stand in front of the actual hieroglyph the doctrine reads. You see a vessel, sometimes three vessels; inside or around them, wavy horizontal lines; above, the flat sign for the sky (pet).6 The conventional gloss says: Nun, the watery sign, the primeval flood.
Run Odwirafo's reading. The vessel is the container — the black substance that holds everything. The wavy lines are not literally water; they are wave-energy, the back-and-forth pattern of charged potential. The sky-sign places this outside the earth, in the cosmic black medium, not in any earthly ocean.6 So the glyph is a diagram of a specific cosmological state: charged wave-energy held inside the dark medium, before any star exists. "Within the blackness is a wave energy, male and female, Nun and Nunet."6
What the case study shows is how much hangs on wave versus water. If Nun is "the primeval waters," the image is a flood — a lot of undifferentiated liquid. If Nun is "wave-energy within the black substance," the image is a physics of charged potential: the same picture, but now it is describing energy-states rather than a body of water. The teacher leans on the iconographic detail — the waves, not the water; the container, the sky-sign — to argue the image was always about energy contained in a medium. Whether or not one accepts the reading, the case shows the method: the doctrine is built by pressing on exactly which features of the glyph are doing the work.
It is the moment before a hard effort — a heavy lift, a decisive sentence, a confrontation you have prepared for. You have already vitalized (the breath is up, the heat is there). Now there is a temptation: to fire immediately, to dump the energy the instant you feel it.
The doctrine says wait in the wave. Nun-Nunet is inert energy — charged, full of potential, but held. You let the energy build into waves: not yet release, not yet the explosion into Ra-Raet, but a back-and-forth that escalates. You feel it gather. The lion does not pounce the instant it is alert; it coils, the power building in the stillness, until the wave is high enough that the release is total.1 You hold the charge until it is full — until releasing it now would mean releasing everything at once, not leaking it out early in a thin stream.
Then you let the wave break. The held energy converts to action in a single concentrated release, the way the waves finally generate the sphere that rises and explodes. The practice is the discipline of the pause at full charge — the refusal to spend inert potential before it has gathered into a wave worth breaking. Spend it early and you act weakly. Hold it to the wave's crest and the release carries everything you had.
Confusing inert with empty. The first failure misreads "inert." Nun-Nunet is charged and at rest, not drained. A practitioner who reads the still phase as emptiness — "nothing is happening, so there is nothing here" — misses that the lion lying down is full of power. The diagnostic: treating a quiet, gathering state as a dead one, and forcing action prematurely because you think the stillness means absence.
Releasing before the wave. The second failure spends the charge too early — firing the instant vitality arrives, before the energy has gathered into a wave. The result is a thin, weak release: action that should have been concentrated comes out leaked. The corrective is the pause-at-full-charge; let the waves build before you let them break.
Stalling in the wave forever. The opposite failure never releases — endlessly gathering, coiling, waiting, treating the held charge as a comfortable place to live. But Nun-Nunet is inert precisely because it is *pre-*radiant; its whole purpose is to escalate into Ra-Raet. Energy held forever is energy that never became anything. The diagnostic is the chronically "about-to" practitioner — always charged, always waiting, never breaking the wave.
Nun is one of the best-attested members of the Hermopolitan Ogdoad; mainstream Egyptology reads Nun/Naunet as the primeval waters / the inert primordial ocean, which already carries the "inert" sense Odwirafo emphasizes. The specific move from primeval waters to wave-energy / electromagnetic energy within the black substance is Odwirafo's interpretive reading, consistent with his phase-transition cosmogony but not the standard rendering. The nunu = "to stir" (Akan) and nun = "to be inert" links are part of the comparative-linguistic method quarantined per Odwirafo Source Tensions Cat 1. [TRADITION INTERPRETATION]
Open question: mainstream "primeval waters" and Odwirafo's "wave-energy" both fit the wavy-line iconography and the inert sense — but they make different downstream claims. Waters suggests a substance Ra rises out of; wave-energy suggests a charged field Ra condenses from. Do the primary texts (the parentage language, "Nun father of Ra") discriminate between these, or are both readings underdetermined by the sources?
Odwirafo and mainstream Egyptology converge unusually closely here, which makes the residual split sharp. Both agree Nun is inert and primordial and depicted with wavy lines and a vessel; both agree Nun is, in some sense, the parent-substrate of the emerging sun. The Egyptologist reads this as the primeval waters — a mythic ocean of non-existence from which the creator-sun rises on the first mound. Odwirafo reads it as wave-energy within the black substance — a charged field from which radiant spheres condense. The convergence is the inert-primordial-parent role; the split is water versus energy-field. What the split reveals is the difference between a mythological and a physical register: the Egyptologist is reconstructing an ancient image (a watery chaos) and is content to leave it an image; Odwirafo is insisting the image was always a coded physics (charged potential in a medium) and that reading it as "water" loses the energy-claim the ancestors encoded. Neither side disputes the glyph. They dispute whether the glyph is a picture of a flood or a diagram of a field — and that is a disagreement about whether the tradition was doing mythology or doing physics in symbolic dress.
The plain version: this pair is the claim that there is a distinct state of charged potential held in reserve — full power, zero output — and that this state is its own necessary stage between being-alive and taking-action. That state shows up wherever people study readiness and the loading of force.
Behavioral-mechanics: Coiled Potential and Timing the Release — Strategic and martial traditions prize the held, loaded state — power gathered and not yet spent — and treat the timing of release as the whole skill. Nun-Nunet names the same state cosmologically: inert wave-energy, full of potential, awaiting the threshold. The fit is the lion image both traditions reach for independently. What the parallel unlocks that neither states alone: the cosmogony supplies a three-failure diagnostic for the held state (spend early / never release / mistake charge for emptiness) that maps directly onto tactical timing errors — premature commitment, paralysis-by-readiness, and misreading a calm opponent as a weak one.
Psychology: Arousal and Readiness Potential — Psychophysiology distinguishes diffuse vitality/arousal from the focused readiness potential that immediately precedes a committed action — a real, measurable lag between being aroused and being mobilized. The doctrine draws the identical line: Hehu-Hehut (vitality) is not yet Nun-Nunet (energy-for-movement), and neither is yet Ra-Raet (the act). The split is method — lab measurement versus cosmogonic sequence — but both carve the path from rest to action at the same joints. The insight neither generates alone: that "alive," "loaded," and "acting" are three distinct states with thresholds between them, such that you can be stuck at any joint — vitalized but unloaded, loaded but unreleased — and the tradition and the lab independently find the same three-stage structure.
The Sharpest Implication
If Nun-Nunet is a real and necessary stage, then the inert, charged, doing-nothing state is not a failure to act — it is part of acting, the loading without which the release is weak. Our default reads stillness-with-potential as wasted time: you're just sitting there, charged and idle, accomplishing nothing. The doctrine says the opposite — that the lion lying down is not failing to hunt, it is hunting, in the loading phase, and that to skip the inert wave is to fire half-cocked. Take it seriously and the cultural pressure to be perpetually active looks like a structural error: a civilization that cannot tolerate the inert-charge phase will keep releasing before the wave, and wonder why its actions come out thin.
