It's tempting to hear "be a little different, not too different" and file it under obvious advice. The kind that sounds true and tells you nothing you can actually act on.
Here's what makes it sharper than that.
Most artists don't fail by being too conventional, or too weird, in some vague overall sense. They fail by spreading their novelty across too many things at once.
A new sound. A new image. A new lyrical approach. All at the same time.
Nothing about the song reads as a single, legible point of difference when that happens. The listener can't locate what's new, because everything is slightly new, and the whole thing reads as simply unfamiliar rather than distinctive.
The discipline isn't "be somewhat different." It's narrower and stricter than that: pick exactly one place to be different, and hold everything else steady around it.
You've written two songs for your debut single.
One breaks from convention in several places at once. A different narrative structure. An unusual perspective. Several small stylistic choices, layered together.
The other keeps almost everything familiar. Conventional structure, conventional production, conventional instrumentation. Except for one thing — a narrator's voice and specific age nobody else on the chart is using right now.
The more broadly unusual song is arguably the more interesting piece of writing.
It's also the riskier choice for a first single. A listener encountering it for the first time has to process several unfamiliar things simultaneously, with nothing familiar to anchor the listen.

The single point of novelty gets one more layer of engineered familiarity stacked on top of it.
Name the song after a reigning country star.
"We put that out deliberately, so people would ask, who's this new artist with a song called 'Tim McGraw'?"1
The title borrows an established name's credibility and curiosity value. That does double duty.
It makes an unknown artist's debut feel anchored to something the audience already trusts. And it provokes a specific question — who is this? — that a more generic title would never generate on its own.
It's worth sitting for a second with what "Picture to Burn" actually was, since the road not taken clarifies the road that got picked.
That song leans harder into a sharper, more openly angry perspective — less universally palatable, more specific in its edge. Musically and lyrically, it asks more of a first-time listener before paying it back.
None of that makes it a worse song. It makes it a riskier first song — the wrong place to spend a debut's single shot at a first impression, precisely because it doesn't leave the listener anywhere familiar to stand while they absorb what's new about it.
The evidence is Mauskapf's computational research across a large sample of actual chart-topping songs. That gives the one-point-of-difference pattern real empirical weight, rather than treating it as received industry folklore.
Here's the tension, though. "Optimal distinctiveness" is easiest to identify after a song has already succeeded.
Applied prospectively — deciding which single point of difference is the right one to lead with, and which of a song's several unusual features to suppress in favor of familiarity — is a judgment call with no formula attached. Plenty of songs that followed this exact logic still failed to chart.
