If counterfeit paiza were honored, Tas will be punished worse. The accountability flows in both directions.

By evening, all five travelers have moved on toward their destinations. They will pass through perhaps twenty more relay stations before reaching their respective ends of journey. At each station, the same procedure. The paiza is examined. The services are provided. The Yuan administrative architecture extends travel-credential authority across the entire continental empire.

When the Yuan falls in 1368, the system ends. The Ming dynasty does not honor paiza credentials. Continental travel becomes substantially harder. Italian merchants like Polo's successors find their travel routes shorter, less reliable, more expensive. The continental commerce that the paiza supported declines. By 1400 the paiza is a museum object — survived in physical examples in archaeological recoveries, but no longer functional. The political-administrative authority that made it work ended with the Mongol empire. Like the relay stations themselves, the paiza required ongoing Yuan administrative support that the post-Yuan world did not provide.

The Paiza System Failure: Diagnostic Signs

First diagnostic — dependence on Mongol political authority backing. The paiza was valuable because Mongol authority would enforce its honor at every checkpoint. When Mongol political authority weakened in the late 14th century, the paiza's enforcement guarantee weakened.
