The whole science of brainwashing starts with a flood and a room full of drowning dogs.
September 22, 1924, Leningrad. The Neva River overran its embankment in the largest flood in centuries, and the water came for the basement kennel of the Institute of Experimental Medicine — the laboratory of Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel laureate who had spent decades teaching dogs to salivate at bells. The water rose. First it covered the dogs' paws, then their bellies, then their shoulders, until they were half-floating in their cages, nostrils pressed against the wire mesh at the top, howling. At the last moment a handler waded through the flooded streets and pulled them out one by one — but to free them from the cages he had to force their heads under the water first. They fought him in panic.1
Then the strange thing. The dogs were never the same. And it's what happened to them afterward — not the flood itself — that opened the door to a century of coercive persuasion.
The rescued dogs' personalities inverted. The meek ones turned aggressive; the outgoing ones turned shy. It was as if a different animal now lived inside each dog. But the detail that electrified the laboratory was this: the dogs had forgotten everything they'd been taught. All the patient conditioning, the learned responses Pavlov had built up over years — wiped clean.2
A single episode of overwhelming terror had reached into these animals and erased their training and rearranged their temperaments. The staff talked about it for weeks. Pavlov wrote to colleagues about it. He talked about that flood for the rest of his life.
Sit with what that means, because it's the seed of everything. Here was hard evidence that a sufficiently extreme experience doesn't just frighten an organism — it can reset it, dissolving established learning and reorganizing the personality around the trauma. If you could do that to a dog with a flood, what could you do to a person with the right kind of engineered catastrophe? Pavlov didn't ask the question that way. But the question was now on the table, and the twentieth century would spend a hundred years answering it.
From the drowning dogs Pavlov derived a theory he called traumatic disintegration — the idea that severe stress could break down the established structure of learning and behavior, leaving the organism in a plastic, disorganized state.3 And then he did the thing that turns an observation into a science: he reproduced it on purpose.
Two months after the flood, once the dogs had finally settled and relearned their behaviors, Pavlov intentionally exposed one of them to a small stream of water — allowed to trickle noiselessly into the room and pool on the floor. Just a trickle. But the dog froze. In the following days its temperament changed again, and it once more forgot its learned behaviors.4
That trickle is one of the most important experiments in this whole history, and it's easy to miss because it's so small. Pavlov had shown that the disintegration was repeatable and triggerable — that you didn't need a whole flood, just the right cue to reactivate the terror. He had converted a natural disaster into a controllable variable. The flood was an accident. The trickle was a method.
Pavlov studied traumatic disintegration in humans too, going back and forth between his dog lab and the psychiatric hospital, observing that the severely traumatized were not only exhausted but suggestible — especially when given conflicting instructions.5 Trauma, he noted, left a hidden vulnerability.
This is where the science acquired a state sponsor. Pavlov's materialist conviction — that a human being is fundamentally a system, "roughly speaking, a machine," to be understood by decomposition into parts — dovetailed with the Bolshevik project of building a New Soviet Man. If behavior is mechanical and modifiable, then people can be reshaped by controlling their conditions, and that is exactly what the new state wanted to hear.6
And here is the line that history drew, whether or not Pavlov intended it: Stalin's show trials and purges swept millions of people into situations of extreme, sustained stress — and most of them disintegrated under interrogation, exactly as Pavlov's theory predicted. Pavlov himself was lucky enough to die a natural death in 1936, just as those trials were beginning. But his name has been chained to brainwashing ever since, because the show-trial confessions looked like traumatic disintegration performed on human beings at the scale of a nation. The drowning dogs had become the template.
You want to reset an organism — dissolve its old conditioning so you can install new behavior. Pavlov shows you the shape of the technique, even if he found it by accident.
First you need overwhelming stress — enough to push the nervous system past the point where it can maintain its established patterns. The flood did this to the dogs by accident; you would do it deliberately, through terror sustained past the breaking point. You are not trying to hurt the organism. You are trying to disorganize it, to reach the state where old learning dissolves.
Watch for the signature that it's worked: the personality inverts. The meek turn aggressive, the confident turn timid, and — the key marker — the established responses vanish. The organism has forgotten what it knew. It is now plastic, suggestible, especially if you feed it conflicting instructions so it cannot find stable ground.
And here's Pavlov's most useful discovery for anyone who would misuse it: once you've disintegrated an organism, you don't need the full catastrophe to do it again. A trickle of water — the right reminder cue — reactivates the whole collapse. What tells you the reset is complete is not the terror at its peak but the aftermath: the animal that no longer remembers its training, standing in a small pool of water, frozen, ready to be taught something new.
The evidence is Pavlov's own documented observations — the flood, the dogs' memory loss and temperament inversion, the deliberate trickle-water reproduction, all recorded in the laboratory record and Pavlov's correspondence. The traumatic-disintegration theory is his, stated in his own terms.
The tension is one Dimsdale is careful about: how much of "brainwashing" does Pavlov actually explain? The show-trial confessions resemble traumatic disintegration, and contemporaries leapt to the conclusion that the Soviets had weaponized Pavlov's science. But resemblance isn't mechanism. The scholarly camp Dimsdale ultimately favors would argue that the confessions came from ordinary sleep deprivation, isolation, and interrogation — not from any secret Pavlovian technique. So the unresolved question sits right at the origin: is traumatic disintegration the true engine of coercive persuasion, or a suggestive metaphor that a frightened world mistook for a mechanism? Pavlov is the bogeyman of the whole book precisely because that question never fully closes.

Pavlov proved the erasure half in dogs; Cameron proved the implantation half is where it breaks down. The insight the pairing produces: Pavlov's flood showed that terror can dissolve established learning — but it never showed that you can reliably install new learning into the dissolved organism. Cameron mistook the first result for a warrant for the second, and destroyed his patients' memories without implanting anything. The dog that froze at the trickle of water — motionless, unresponsive, its learned behaviors gone — is a dissociative freeze response, observed in an animal decades before the term was clinical. Pavlov even noted that some stressed dogs became so quiet they seemed hypnotized, and read it as a coping strategy. The connection reveals that traumatic disintegration and dissociation are the same phenomenon described from two directions: Pavlov saw it as the breakdown of conditioning (the training is gone); trauma theory sees it as the protective disconnection of an overwhelmed nervous system (the animal has gone offline to survive). Both are looking at the frozen dog in the pool of water. Sharpest implication: The founding discovery of brainwashing science is that overwhelming terror can dissolve established learning and reset a personality — and that once dissolved, an organism can be re-collapsed with just a reminder cue. But the flood proved only the erasure, never the reinstallation. Everything tragic in this book flows from operators who saw Pavlov's drowning dogs forget their training and concluded, wrongly, that a mind wiped clean is a mind you can then write on at will.
