Prognosticatory Systems in Military Practice

Forty-five percent of the manual is fortune-telling

Open the Hu-ling Ching, a Sung dynasty military encyclopedia, and start counting pages. Roughly four hundred and thirty of them. Now count the ones devoted to omens, star-charts, lucky and unlucky days, cloud-reading, and the rest of the divinatory apparatus. About a hundred and ninety — nearly half the book.1 This is not some mystic's grimoire. It's a working military text, sitting on the shelf of an army that prided itself on hard, human-effort intelligence. And almost half of it is fortune-telling.

That is the puzzle this page is about. Sawyer surveys these systems while flatly noting they were "bereft of any scientific basis or empirical validity."2 So why are they there — taking up that much shelf space in the toughest-minded military culture of the premodern world? The answer is that a frightened commander, responsible for an army and a state, will reach for any indication of the correct path. The prognosticatory systems were the menu he reached for: an enormous, codified attempt to answer the questions intelligence couldn't.

What this actually is

The prognosticatory apparatus is the body of formal divinatory systems the T'ang and Sung military texts compiled and organized to answer recurring military-intelligence questions. Not the rejection of omens (that's the rationalists), and not omens-as-morale (that's ch'i and troop psychology) — but the actual machinery: the day-counting cycles, the inauspicious-day tables, the star-correlations, the cloud-and-ch'i catalogs, all arranged "to reflect the requirements of military intelligence."3

Sawyer is careful about its status. He treats it as a "countercurrent" running alongside the human-effort tradition that Sun-tzu founded — never the mainstream, but never eradicable either.4 He surveys it not because he credits it but because it was, "in numerous variations, long regarded as an integral part of the arsenal for gathering information and predicting military events."4 The systems claimed to be a second informational dimension, sitting next to spies and scouts. This page is the catalog of that claim.

How the machinery is built

The volume alone tells you these were serious institutional investments, not marginal superstition. Beyond the Hu-ling Ching's ~45 percent, the mid-eleventh-century Wu-ching Tsung-yao — an encyclopedia of 2,340 pages — gives roughly 15 percent of its bulk to prognostication, much of it expanding earlier material from the T'ai-pai Yin-ching. Four of the ten volumes of the Ming-era Wu-pei Chih are prognosticatory.1 When this much trained labor and paper goes into a subject, "marginal" is the wrong word.

At the foundation sits the calendar. Several systems run on the "Ten Stems and Twelve Branches" — two sequential series standing for Heaven and Earth — which pair in a rolling cycle to produce the sixty named days of traditional Chinese reckoning.5 Onto this sixty-day wheel the texts paint hazard zones. The Hu-ling Ching's chapter on choosing a day to send the army forth marks out the "Nine Uglies" and the "Six Impoverishments" — specific days, falling in various lunar months, on which you must not commence military activity.5 Other forbidden days cluster where the moon's phase is unstable: the end and start of the lunar cycle, read as yin's deadly activity, plus numerical combinations that "presage calamity."5 One general principle unifies the whole table — "on days when Heaven's ch'i is severed, you cannot send the army forth or launch an attack."5

Layered on top of the day-cycle are the bigger interpretive engines: the five phases, yin and yang, and even the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching, "abstracted from their original context and converted into time and space markers with an intrinsic hierarchical order."6 These supply both single theories and "complex hybrid systems" — the day isn't just lucky or unlucky, it has a phase, a direction, a relationship to your enterprise.

Then the sky itself becomes data. Sawyer's catalog of watched celestial phenomena is long: rainbows by type and orientation; wind by direction, type, ferocity, and duration; the activity and constellation-positions of innumerable stars and important conjunctions; comets, meteors, shooting stars; the sun and moon's characteristics and eclipses; the general look of the sky; rain; seasonal discordances.7 And finally, the most developed branch — the watching of ch'i, the subtle vapors, and their visible form, the clouds, which "engendered hundreds of detailed observations with correlated implications, including victory and defeat."7

What turns this sprawl into a practice rather than a curiosity is the question-menu the texts claim it answers. Sawyer lists twelve recurring intelligence topics the systems were organized to address: selecting an appropriate day for initiating a campaign; predicting victory or defeat; determining the basic advisability of engaging an enemy; fathoming enemy commanders; determining an emissary's credibility; predicting the existence of ambushes; discerning the enemy's location; fathoming where to encamp; determining whether to be tactical guest or host; warning of as-yet-unseen threats; and deciding when to dispatch spies and agents.3 Read that list again and notice what it is: a complete intelligence wish-list. Every question a commander would kill to have answered, the prognosticatory systems promised to answer — from the stars, the days, and the clouds, without a single agent in the enemy camp.

That is the mechanism. The apparatus is a surrogate intelligence service. Where human spying is slow, dangerous, and uncertain, the systems offered an indoor, paper-based alternative that claimed to answer the same twelve questions. Its appeal was never its accuracy. Its appeal was its availability — it answered when no agent could.

Analytical case study: the day-selection table of the Hu-ling Ching

Take the one system Sawyer details — choosing the day to march.5 It works like this. You start with the sixty-day Stems-and-Branches cycle, the same arithmetic underlying the lunar calendar. Against that cycle the Hu-ling Ching lays templates of prohibition. The "Nine Uglies" and "Six Impoverishments" name particular days, distributed across the lunar months, as flatly forbidden for starting a campaign. You add the moon-phase rule: the cusp days where the old moon dies and the new one isn't yet stable are deadly, because that instability is yin's lethal activity. You add numerical-combination rules that flag certain pairings as calamitous. And over all of it floats the master principle: avoid days when "Heaven's ch'i is severed."5

What's striking, deconstructed, is how this functions as a decision procedure. A commander facing the most consequential and least controllable choice he has — when to commit the army — is handed a deterministic table that converts an unbearable open question into a lookup. Is today permissible? Check the cycle, check the phase, check the combinations. The table doesn't predict the future. It removes the agony of choosing by externalizing the choice onto Heaven's calendar. Its psychological payload — a frightened man getting a clean answer — is exactly what makes it persist despite, as Sawyer says, having no empirical validity.2 The case shows the apparatus's real product: not accuracy, but the relief of decidability.

Implementation as a scene

It's the eve of the campaign and you are the staff officer the commander trusts with the calendar. He has asked you a question you cannot answer with scouts: is tomorrow the day? You unroll the day-table. Your finger runs the sixty-name cycle to find tomorrow's stem and branch. You check it against the Nine Uglies — not there. Against the Six Impoverishments — clear. You look at the moon: it's mid-phase, stable, not the deadly cusp where yin turns lethal. You run the numerical combinations for any pairing that "presages calamity." Nothing flags. Last, the master test — is Heaven's ch'i severed tomorrow? You read the signs and find it whole.

You go back to the tent and you do not say "I think we'll be fine." You say: tomorrow is permissible. Heaven's ch'i is not severed; none of the inimical days fall on it. The commander nods. What you have handed him is not a forecast — you both half-know that. What you've handed him is permission, a clean external warrant that lets a man carrying the fate of the state stop turning the question over and give the order. The army will move at dawn, and whether it wins or loses, no one will say the day was wrong.

How the apparatus fails

The first and structural failure is the one Sawyer names: no empirical validity.2 The systems were "theoretically verifiable in subsequent concrete events" — they claimed you could check the omen against the outcome — but in practice they were never falsified out of existence, because a believer always finds a reason the prediction would have held. A diagnostic system that cannot be wrong is a system that teaches you nothing.

The second failure is leakage from commander to troops. Sawyer notes that omens were "certainly disbelieved by military commanders in the details" but "generally given credence, especially by ordinary soldiers."9 The danger sign is a general who builds a campaign timetable around lucky days "for the troops' morale" and then finds the troops' belief has become a constraint on him — paralyzing the army on a forbidden day even when the tactical moment is ripe. The apparatus he meant to use on his men has begun using him.

The third failure is over-elaboration into uselessness. The systems grew "astonishingly complex," requiring "arcane skills, intricate observations, and extensive knowledge."10 At some point a method so intricate that only a specialist can run it, and only after lengthy observation, can no longer deliver an answer at the speed a battlefield demands. The diagnostic sign is an apparatus consulted after the decision was forced by events — fortune-telling as post-hoc reassurance rather than guidance, which is the apparatus admitting it has stopped functioning as intelligence.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Sawyer holds two attitudes toward this material at once, and he doesn't pretend otherwise. He calls the systems empirically baseless and their persistence in a "highly rational, experientially derived military literature" almost "incomprehensible."2 But in the same breath he reaches for a sympathetic frame: contemporary Western military writing on commanders using intuitive, "experientially based" decision-making "perhaps veers not too distantly" from the old recognition of battlefield factors "vaguely expressible in terms of mood, context, abnormalities, or miasmic ch'i."11 That comparison is generous and it is also a stretch — equating a coded day-table with a modern general's gut feel papers over a real difference, since intuition is the compression of one's own experience while the Nine Uglies are an inherited table consulted before any experience of this campaign exists. Sawyer flags it as a "perhaps," which is the right hedge, but a reader should notice he is doing rehabilitation work here, softening the "incomprehensible" verdict he delivered a paragraph earlier.

There's a deeper unresolved question Sawyer leaves open and honest: how much were these systems actually used in command? He admits "the degree to which such methods were recognized and employed remains to be studied" and that the literature was "largely irrelevant to actual battlefield command from the late Warring States on."2 So we have a strange object: a body of work occupying half a military encyclopedia whose operational uptake is genuinely unknown. The page volume proves institutional investment; it does not prove battlefield use. Sawyer is right not to resolve that gap, and the cross-dynasty continuity he sketches — T'ai-pai Yin-ching to Hu-ling Ching to Wu-ching Tsung-yao to Wu-pei Chih, a thousand-year unbroken line — is the kind of synthesizing arc that deserves independent verification before we read it as a single living tradition rather than successive compilers copying their predecessors.

To Confirmation Bias as an Ancient Problem. A prognosticatory system that is "theoretically verifiable in subsequent events" but never actually abandoned is a textbook engine of confirmation bias operating at institutional scale.11 When the omen and the outcome agree, the system is vindicated; when they disagree, the practitioner finds the countervailing factor that "must have" intervened. The cross-domain insight neither field generates alone: confirmation bias is usually studied as an individual cognitive flaw, but here it is institutionalized — encoded into the structure of a discipline, taught, copied across dynasties, occupying half an encyclopedia. The bias isn't in a person's head; it's in the architecture of the knowledge itself, which is built so that no result can refute it. That is how an empirically baseless practice survives a thousand years inside a rational culture: not because individuals are stupid, but because the discipline is designed to be unfalsifiable, and unfalsifiability plus the human hunger for decidability is enough to keep any apparatus alive indefinitely. Study one diviner and you see a biased man; study the system and you see bias hardened into method.

To Sun-tzu's Five Spies. Sun-tzu grounds foreknowledge in human agency — it "must be obtained from men," never from spirits or analogy with past events. The prognosticatory apparatus is the precise countercurrent: foreknowledge obtained from anything but men — from days, stars, clouds, ch'i. Set them side by side and a sharp structural tension appears that neither resolves alone. Both are answering the same twelve intelligence questions; they simply locate the answer in opposite places — Sun-tzu in the enemy's camp via an agent, the systems in the sky via a table. The insight: the prognosticatory apparatus is best understood not as Sun-tzu's opposite but as his shadow — it exists because human-source intelligence is dangerous, slow, and never complete, so it answers exactly the questions Sun-tzu's five spies are too few, too risky, or too late to answer. The systems thrive in the gap the spies leave. Foreknowledge demand is constant; when the human supply runs short, the celestial surrogate fills in. The two doctrines aren't rivals over truth so much as they are demand and substitute over the same scarce good — certainty before commitment.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication: the prognosticatory systems are a surrogate intelligence service — they sold availability where human spying could only offer risk, and a frightened commander will buy availability over accuracy every time. Their real product was never foreknowledge. It was decidability.
