Sometimes he literally picks up feathers and bits of earth and leaf and sticks them in the back of the notebook as additional mnemonics. The notebook is not text-only. It is a physical container for the trip's mnemonic residue.
Perell offers an analogy that lands: the page becomes a condensation surface. Macfarlane: Yes. So you have this sort of vapor that you've been working in and with but almost invisibly because it's evaporated. But then the paper becomes the thing that condenses those thoughts. And I speak for paper. Pen and paper do things that pixel and keyboard can't.1
The metaphor is precise. The day's experience is vapor — present everywhere, invisible, evaporating moment by moment as it occurs. The notebook is for capture. It is not for composition. Nobody could read my notebooks and follow a linear flow. I looked at them, they seemed completely messy and beyond comprehension. Exactly. Except to me. So highly encrypted.1
The notebooks are written in a private encoding. Bad handwriting plus personal shorthand plus mnemonic objects. The original encryption. Even Macfarlane, returning months later, has to do work to decode them — but the decoding is precisely what unlocks the keyboard phase of work.
The notebook's function: keep the day's vapor from completely evaporating. The notebook does not need to be readable by anyone but the future self who will use it as input to the keyboard phase. Phase 2 — At-home expansion. Five, six, seven, ten notebooks rammed and crammed. Sits with them. Picks up each fragment. Each fragment is the visible end of a thread of memory. He pulls — and they just keep coming — and the whole scene around the fragment opens up.1 On screen and keyboard now. The expansion produces the eventual prose.
The two phases are pen-vs-keyboard for a reason. The capture phase wants the cognitive properties of hand-on-paper (intimate, mnemonic, embodied). The expansion phase wants the cognitive properties of screen-on-keyboard (fast, revisable, searchable). Each tool is right for its phase.
Perell offers a smaller-scale version of the same practice: I just get a little piece of paper, maybe 4 in by 2 in like smaller than an index card. And I've just been writing down thoughts that I have during the day with the goal of filling up the index card.1 The goal is the fill. Always amazed at how many thoughts I've had that I didn't even realize that I had.
The variant works on the same principle as Macfarlane's A6 notebooks — provide a small physical container that forces capture-discipline. The size constraint limits what gets onto the card and forces the writer to register what would otherwise pass unrecorded. The Perell index card is the desk-based version of Macfarlane's field-based A6.
Macfarlane and note-capture-and-refinement-practice converge on the principle that capture-discipline produces material the writer would otherwise lose. The Sharpest Implication
If pen-and-paper has cognitive properties that pixel-and-keyboard does not have, then the contemporary trend toward note-taking apps and digital-first capture is silently degrading the capture-quality of writers who have adopted it. The uncomfortable implication: many writers who have moved their notebook practice into Notion, Obsidian, or Apple Notes have not noticed that the move comes with a capture-density loss because the loss is invisible until they try to do Macfarlane-scale book work and find the notebooks lacking. The discipline Macfarlane describes is not nostalgia for paper. It is operational specification of what the paper does that the screen does not — and the writer who wants to do long-form work needs the paper for the capture phase even if the keyboard takes over for the composition phase.
