Open a Python file and you are not reading English. You are reading a language a human built on purpose, every token defined, nothing ambiguous, nothing left to mood or accent. Run it and the machine does exactly what the symbols say. Selvalingam wants you to hold Sanskrit in your hand the same way.1 His claim lands like a joke and then refuses to be one: Sanskrit is not a natural language at all. It is engineered. Saṃskṛta literally means "put together, refined, perfected" — artificial in the precise sense that a violin is artificial.1 Nobody's grandmother babbled it on a riverbank and watched it drift into dialects. It was constructed to do a job, and the job was not buying mangoes.
So when Selvalingam says "Sanskrit is like C or Python, it's the source code of the universe," he is not being mystical for effect.1 He means it structurally. A trader's language exists to move goods and orders between strangers — get the cart to the gate, settle the bill, agree on a price. Sanskrit was built to map something else entirely: the inside. The textures of consciousness, the gradations of an inner state, the exact shape of an experience two meditators are trying to confirm they both had. That is what the source-code metaphor is for. Most languages run on reality, transacting about objects out there. This one was written to compile the operator's own interior.
Here is the fork that the whole page hangs on. Prākṛta — the Prakrits — means "natural, raw, as-it-came." These were the living tongues, the lingua francas, the languages people actually traded and gossiped and ran empires in.1 Saṃskṛta is the deliberate opposite: the refined, the assembled, the perfected. The grammar was locked down (Pāṇini's machine), the sounds fixed to points of articulation in the mouth, the morphology made regular enough that you can derive a word the way you derive a function's output from its arguments.1
Selvalingam's hard edge is that this difference is not decorative. A natural language drifts because it has to — it serves a crowd that keeps changing, so its words bend to whoever is using them this decade. An engineered language holds still because holding still is the entire point. You do not want your meditation manual to mean something subtly different in three hundred years the way "awful" went from awe-inspiring to bad. So the tradition built a language that resists that drift, and then used it to store the one kind of knowledge that cannot survive drift: instructions for an inner experiment.1
That is the definition, stripped down. Sanskrit is a technical, intentionally-stabilized notation for inter-subjective inner reality — a way for people who cannot see into each other's heads to nonetheless name the same internal coordinate and agree they are standing on it. English can tell you where the train is. It falls flat the second you ask it to specify a state of consciousness with the precision the work requires, because it was never built for that load. Selvalingam puts it bluntly: "English falls flat on consciousness."1
Think about what English is for. It is the language of empire, of bureaucracy, of science — and those three share a target.1 All of them point outward. Empire needs to administer territory and people it can see. Bureaucracy needs to file, count, and route external objects. Science needs to describe a world out there that behaves the same whether or not anyone is watching. English is magnificent at this. It is a trader's language scaled to a civilization: precise about the external, promiscuous about the internal. Ask it for the inner life and it hands you a thin drawer of words — happy, sad, anxious, calm — blunt instruments for an infinitely graded territory.
Sanskrit was tuned to the opposite frequency. The grammar carries distinctions that map states, not things. Where English has one word for "I know," the contemplative vocabulary forks knowing into a dozen modes because the experience of knowing forks that many ways, and the practitioner needs to tell them apart to navigate.1 This is the engineering payoff. A coding language earns its rigidity: because the syntax is fixed, the same program runs the same way on every machine. Because Sanskrit's morphology is fixed, the same instruction lands the same way in every disciplined head that parses it. The rigidity is not pedantry — it is what makes the inner instruction portable across two people, across a lineage, across a thousand years.
And here is the move that makes the metaphor more than cute. A trader's language describes the world to people who already share the world. A source language runs — it does something when executed. Selvalingam's claim is that mantric Sanskrit belongs to the second kind. The syllable is not a label pasted on a state; correctly uttered, it is supposed to produce the state, the way a function call produces a return value rather than describing one.1 That is why he reaches for "source code of the universe" and not "dictionary of the universe." A dictionary points at things. Source code, when compiled and run, makes things happen. The whole technology of mantra assumes language of the second kind.
What this page hands the rest of the vault is a clean, modern handle for an old and easily-mystified claim. "Empty" could mean dull, could mean spacious, could mean the floor dropped out, could mean a clean no-thingness that is the whole point. The teacher cannot tell which. The signal arrives smeared. The instruction that comes back is therefore a guess.1
Selvalingam's diagnosis is that this is not the practitioner's failure or the teacher's. It is a hardware mismatch. English is a trader's language. It evolved under selection pressure to be unambiguous about external objects that two parties can both point at — the cart, the coin, the gate — and it is exquisite at that.1 But you cannot point at a state of consciousness. There is no shared external referent to anchor the word. So the trader's language, dropped onto inner terrain, loses its one superpower and reverts to vagueness. The very feature that makes it great for commerce — its readiness to mean whatever the room needs it to mean — is fatal for contemplative precision.
Now run the same report through the engineered language. Sanskrit's contemplative vocabulary forks where English lumps. The states the practitioner is fumbling toward have names that are defined, the way a variable is defined — with a fixed sense the tradition has held stable across centuries.1 The teacher receives a coordinate, not a smear. The instruction that comes back is aimed. This is the entire reason the tradition refused to let its inner science migrate into the convenient living tongues and insisted on the inconvenient perfected one: the convenient language would have corrupted the data.
The deepest layer of the case study is the one Selvalingam slips in almost sideways: he ties it to artificial intelligence.1 "What is an AI? A grammatical model." The most powerful language technology of our moment turns out to be, at its core, a thing that has learned the structure of language and generates from that structure. Selvalingam's point is that the tradition figured out, millennia early, that grammar itself is generative — that if you fix the grammar precisely enough, the language stops merely describing and starts producing. An LLM is a statistical grammatical engine; a mantra is a deterministic one. Both are bets that language, rigorously structured, is not a mirror held up to reality but a machine that does work. Same wager, two civilizations apart.
It is early, still dark, and you are sitting with the syllables of a mantra you have been given. You are not thinking about what it means — that is the first surprise, and the first instruction. You let the meaning go. What you attend to instead is the mouth. The teacher has shown you where each sound is born: this consonant at the soft palate, that one at the teeth, this vowel held open in the throat. You feel the syllable strike its exact point of articulation the way a key strikes its exact string. You are not pronouncing a word. You are executing a sequence, and the sequence is precise because the language was built precise.
You repeat it, and the repetition is not for memory's sake. You are running the program. There is a particular cleanliness to it — the sense that this is not your language, not the loose conversational stuff you think in all day, but something assembled, something that holds. The looseness drains out of your attention because the language gives it nothing loose to grab. Each syllable lands where it must. Slowly the state the mantra is meant to compile begins to come up under you, not because you are imagining it but because, as the tradition insists, the correctly-run syllable produces it. You have stopped using language to talk about your inner life. You are using it to operate your inner life. By the time the room goes grey with morning, you understand in your body why they refused to let this run on the trader's tongue.
You can tell when the metaphor has been swallowed wrong. The first failure is treating Sanskrit as magic rather than engineering — the practitioner who believes the sound works by occult fiat, regardless of articulation, regardless of training, the way one might believe a spell works because it is foreign and old. That is the opposite of source code. Code is the least magical thing there is: it works because every piece is defined and the definitions are honored. A mantra mumbled with no attention to articulation is a misspelled function call. It does not run; it throws an error you cannot see.
The second failure is the reverse — flattening the claim into mere linguistics, "oh, it's just a well-regularized grammar," and missing that the tradition built that regularity to do something. You can describe Python's syntax accurately and still have no idea what a program is for. The third failure is the romantic one: deciding Sanskrit is the only sacred language and English is profane junk. Selvalingam's point is functional, not tribal. English is not bad; it is superb at its job, which is the external world. It "falls flat on consciousness" the way a screwdriver falls flat on a nail — wrong tool, not bad tool.1 Mistake the tool-fit claim for a purity ranking and you have lost the whole insight and gained a snobbery.
The warrant here is a single practitioner transcript, auto-captioned and informal, so every claim on this page is [PARAPHRASED] and carries that weight.1 Selvalingam is doing devotional pedagogy, not historical linguistics, and the source-code framing is his interpretive flourish — vivid, load-bearing for his teaching, and not a claim the field of Indo-Aryan philology would sign in those words. That is the tension to keep live: the vault's scholarly warrant (Samuel, White, Wallis) would treat "Sanskrit is artificial like Python" as a teaching metaphor, not a finding. Sanskrit was deliberately grammatically standardized by Pāṇini — that much is uncontroversial — but "not a natural language at all" overstates it; Sanskrit has demonstrable Indo-Aryan ancestry and once had native speakers. Selvalingam's move is rhetorical compression, and it should be read as such: a true thing (engineered regularity, fixed for preservation) dialed up to a striking thing (a constructed language from nowhere).
The open question worth chewing: if the value of Sanskrit is its non-drift, is that a property of the language or of the institution that froze it — the rote-memorization lineages, the grammatical drills, the refusal to let it go vernacular? Source code does not stay uncorrupted on its own; a version-control discipline keeps it so. Maybe the real "compiler" is the transmission community, and Sanskrit is just the notation it chose to protect.
Here is the plain reason these domains touch: this page says language can be a machine that runs rather than a mirror that reflects, and that exact claim is now the operating assumption of the entire AI industry — so a fifth-century intuition about mantra and a twenty-first-century intuition about large language models turn out to be the same bet about what language fundamentally is.
The sharpest handshake is to Transformer Architecture and Language Model Mechanics. Selvalingam's own hook — "what is an AI? a grammatical model" — is almost a one-line summary of how a transformer works: it has no model of the world, no referents, no things it points at. It has learned the structure of language and generates by predicting what the structure does next. Lay that against the source-code claim and something clicks. The tradition's wager was that if you fix grammar precisely enough, language stops describing and starts producing. The transformer is empirical proof of a weaker, statistical version of exactly that — fix the grammar tightly enough across enough text and the machine generates coherent reality-talk without ever touching reality. The structural parallel is total: both are engines that treat grammar itself as generative. The tension that earns its keep is the difference in determinism — a mantra is meant to run the same every time, an LLM runs differently every time and even hallucinates. So the comparison hands you a real diagnostic: the mantra tradition is betting on grammar as a deterministic compiler, while the LLM proves grammar can be generative probabilistically. The thing the tantric tradition wanted — language that reliably produces an inner state — is precisely the reliability an LLM lacks, which tells you the ancient ambition was for a much stricter machine than the one Silicon Valley built.
The second handshake runs to LLM as Standardization Pressure — Grammar Wildness as Defense. That page argues a contemporary fear: LLMs flatten language toward a bland statistical mean, and idiosyncratic grammar is a defense against being homogenized. Now hold it against Sanskrit, which is standardization as a spiritual instrument — a language deliberately frozen and de-wilded so it would not drift. The structural tension is delicious and not resolvable: in one frame standardization is the enemy of voice (the LLM mean eating individuality), in the other standardization is the precondition of fidelity (the perfected language preserving an inner science across millennia). Same operation, opposite verdict. What that produces is a real criterion for when locking a language down is liberation and when it is death: standardization preserves when the thing being preserved is a shared, verifiable interior coordinate that must survive transmission, and it flattens when it overwrites a singular, expressive interior that exists precisely to differ. Sanskrit froze the first kind on purpose; the LLM threatens the second kind by accident.

Selvalingam's version raises the stakes: if a trader's language can only move thought across external objects, then a civilization speaking only trader's languages may be structurally unable to think certain interior thoughts with precision — not unwilling, unable, the way you cannot express recursion cleanly in a language with no functions. The insight that falls out is uncomfortable: "English falls flat on consciousness" might not be a poetic complaint but a claim about the expressive ceiling of a toolset, and the tradition's whole linguistic apparatus is the attempt to raise that ceiling.
Finally, the inward anchor: The Self Archetype. The Self, in depth psychology, is the integrative center that the ego cannot fully name from inside — there is always more of it than the language of the conscious mind can hold. Sanskrit-as-source-code is, in this light, an attempt to build a notation adequate to that interior largeness: a language engineered specifically to carry the inner coordinates the ordinary self-talk of the ego keeps smearing. The parallel is that both traditions concede the same thing — the inner world overflows the ordinary descriptive language — and the divergence is the response: depth psychology develops images and dreams to reach it; the tantric tradition built a perfected grammar. One went non-verbal; the other built a better verb.
The Sharpest Implication. If Selvalingam is right that your everyday language is a trader's tongue tuned to external objects, then the reason your inner life feels vague and hard to report is not that you are inarticulate — it is that you are trying to run an interior program on a language compiled for commerce, and it keeps returning smeared output. That is destabilizing because it means the felt inarticulacy of the inner life, which everyone privately blames on themselves, might be a tooling problem the whole modern world inherited. You are not bad at describing your states. You are using the wrong machine, and you may not own the right one.
Generative Questions. (1) If "English falls flat on consciousness," what would it actually take to build — or borrow — an inner-state notation precise enough to navigate by, and what do we lose in trade for English's external power? (2) Selvalingam says an AI is "a grammatical model"; if a mantra is a deterministic grammatical model and an LLM is a probabilistic one, what is the third option — and could a contemplative tradition and a machine-learning lab be unknowingly working on the same instrument? (3) Is the non-drift of Sanskrit a property of the language or of the institution that froze it — and if it is the institution, what is the modern equivalent of the memorization lineage, the version control for meaning?
