Picture each planet not as a fixed influence but as a person caught in a specific moment of activity. One planet is lying down, resting. Another is sitting in council. Another is on the move, hurrying somewhere. Another is eating. Another is dancing. Another is sleeping. Twelve possible activities — and the chart's geometry tells you which planet is doing what at the moment of the native's birth. The activity sets the planet's productive register. A Sun caught in Sayana (lying down, resting) delivers different results than a Sun caught in Prakasana (shining) or Aagama (acquiring).
Rao section 15.4.4 catalogs this apparatus — the Sayanaadi avastha system, the most important of all avastha classifications.1 Twelve states, one assigned to each planet through a precise computational formula. The state determines how the planet's results manifest during its dasha periods.
The Sayanaadi system assigns each of the seven traditional planets to one of twelve activity-states based on a multi-input formula. The inputs:

Each state produces planet-specific results — Sun in Sayana produces different effects than Mars in Sayana. Rao at lines 4738–5008 provides detailed result-rosters for each planet in each state.3
The avastha index alone doesn't complete the apparatus. A second computational step determines whether the planet delivers its activity-state result with full power, medium power, or minimal power. The procedure: take the avastha index, multiply it by itself, add a number corresponding to the first sound of the native's name (Table 37 in Rao), take the remainder mod 12, then add a planetary adjustment (5 for Sun and Jupiter, 2 for Moon and Mars, 3 for Mercury/Venus/Saturn, 4 for the nodes). Divide the sum by 3.

The two-step calculation produces both the kind of activity the planet is engaged in (Sayana, Prakasana, etc.) and the intensity with which the activity delivers results (cheshta = full, drishti = medium, vicheshta = minimal).
The architecture incorporates the native's name through the sound-table. The name-sound carries vibrational weight in classical Hindu thought (a parallel to the bija-mantra doctrine), and Rao's apparatus integrates it directly into the planet's productive register. The native's nominal identity is part of the calculation.
Rao at line 5014 lists specific avastha-house combinations that produce override effects regardless of the general result-roster:
The last point is structurally significant. Three of the twelve avasthas (Prakasana, Nritya-lipsa, Kautuka) function as Raja Yoga producers when combined with strong placement in a quadrant or trine. The avastha system isn't a side-apparatus; it interlocks with the Raja Yoga doctrine.
Moon specifically gets special treatment — "Parasara specifically mentioned Moon in the 10th house in Kautuka or Prakasana avasthas" as Raja Yoga-producing. Lunar avastha in the career-house operates with elevated weight.
A native walks in with Moon in the 10th house. Standard 10th-house Moon reading: emotional connection to career, public-facing professional life, fluctuating reputation. The flat reading is decent but unremarkable.
The Sayanaadi calculation runs. Moon's avastha computes to Kautuka (state 11) — being eager. Combined with Moon's 10th-house placement, the configuration matches the Parashari special-case: Moon in the 10th house in Kautuka avastha produces Raja Yoga.
The reading transforms. The Moon doesn't just emotionally connect to career; the Moon is eagerly engaged with the career sphere in a way that activates kingship-level outcomes. The native's eagerness for the work itself — visible in moment-to-moment engagement, not just in long-term planning — becomes a structural Raja Yoga producer. The same Moon caught in Sayana (lying down, resting) in the 10th would produce a sluggish reputation; caught in Kautuka, it produces structural elevation.
The native's actual life confirms. They report being known professionally for visible, palpable eagerness about the work — a quality colleagues comment on. The eagerness wasn't a personality choice; it was the chart's avastha encoding showing through. The Sayanaadi reading delivered what the flat 10th-house Moon analysis would have missed entirely.
It is 8am. You're running the Sayanaadi check on a chart's Sun. You have the relevant inputs from the chart software: Sun is in nakshatra 14 (Chitra), it's planet 1, in navamsa-index 6 in its rashi. Moon is in nakshatra 4, ghati 12, lagna in rashi 5 (Leo).
Calculation: (14 × 1 × 6) + 4 + 12 + 5 = 84 + 21 = 105. Mod 12 = 9. Sun is in Bhojana (eating) avastha.
You consult the Bhojana result-roster for Sun. Standard Sun-in-Bhojana effects. You note: Sun in the 10th house in Bhojana avastha — the override-rule fires. "If a malefic occupies the 10th house in Bhojana or Sayana avastha, all kinds of miseries may be expected." Sun is a malefic for some purposes; the 10th-house Bhojana configuration produces career difficulty regardless of other Sun-strength factors.
You note this in the reading. You run the strength-calculation. Avastha 9 squared = 81; add name-sound number (say 3 for native whose name starts with "L" — sound number 5 per Table 37); 81 + 5 = 86. Mod 12 = 2. Add Sun's planetary adjustment (5): 2 + 5 = 7. Divide by 3: remainder 1 = drishti, medium results. Sun delivers the Bhojana-in-10th difficulty at medium intensity, not full intensity.
Time elapsed: eight minutes once the formula is internalized. The Sayanaadi check produces a layer of specificity the standard avastha system (Diptadi, Baladi, Lajjitadi) doesn't reach. The texture of what the planet is doing shows through where bare planet-strength readings stop.
The apparatus fails when the reader treats Sayanaadi as the sole avastha system. Rao at line 5016 issues an explicit warning: "one should not be carried away with avasthas and one should remember that they are only the 'states' of the planet. The state of a planet related to age, alertness, mood and activity will have a role in the results given by it, but the houses influenced by it in various divisional charts are more important in deciding the results. We should avoid the temptation to make predictions based on thumbrules and look-up tables."
The avastha system is texture-providing, not outcome-determining. A reader who predicts career disaster from Sun-in-Bhojana-in-10th without checking the 10th house's other contents, the 10th lord, the divisional chart D-10, and the dasha sequence produces a thumbrule-based prediction that the broader chart analysis would correct.
A second failure is mis-running the formula. The Sayanaadi calculation has many inputs (nakshatra, planet index, navamsa, lunar nakshatra, ghati, lagna). Mistakes in any one produce a wrong avastha. Practitioners using software for the calculation avoid this; practitioners running it by hand routinely miscalculate.
A third failure is over-emphasizing the special-case overrides. The Parashari override-list at line 5014 catalogs about ten specific configurations. A reader who finds one and treats it as a chart-determining feature without integration with the broader analysis produces inflated predictions. The override-cases sharpen the avastha reading; they don't replace integrated chart analysis.
The Sayanaadi apparatus is set out in Rao section 15.4.4, lines 4698–5016, with Table 36 listing the twelve states, Table 37 listing the name-sound numbers, the strength-calculation procedure, and the result-rosters for each planet in each state.5 The classical source is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; the system appears with stable definition across the classical commentary tradition.
The standing tension: the formula's inclusion of the ghati at birth (G) makes the calculation extremely birth-time-sensitive. A birth-time error of two ghatis (about 48 minutes) shifts G by 2 and the entire avastha-index by ±2. The Sayanaadi readings of charts with imprecise birth times are unreliable. Conservative practitioners refuse to run Sayanaadi without strict birth-time verification.
A second tension: the name-sound input requires knowing the native's given name at birth. Adopted names, anglicized names, or changed names produce different results. Whether to use the birth-name or the operational name is a lineage-specific judgment. Rao is silent on this question; some other commentaries specify birth-name only.
Rao and the broader Sanjay-Rath lineage (Foss, Larsen) transmit the Sayanaadi apparatus with identical definitions and formulas. Kurczak/Fish's transmission is less elaborated — Sayanaadi appears as one of several avastha systems without the detailed override-roster Rao provides. The lineage-divergence is in the depth of operational application — Rao reads Sayanaadi as a primary avastha system; some other practitioners treat it as one option among several.
The system's interaction with Raja Yoga doctrine is significant. Three of the twelve avasthas (Prakasana, Nritya-lipsa, Kautuka) function as Raja Yoga producers when combined with strong placement. This means the avastha system is operationally more important than its avastha-system status suggests — it can generate yogas the other strength-readings would miss.
The Sayanaadi architecture is an activity-state diagnostic — reading not just where an agent is positioned but what they are doing in their position. The same agent in the same position behaves differently depending on the activity-state. Several other vault domains run similar activity-state diagnostics.
Behavioral Mechanics: Six-Minute X-Ray — Hughes's apparatus distinguishes a subject's baseline (resting state) from their active engagement state. The same subject reads completely differently in baseline (sayana-like resting) versus active engagement (prakasana-like shining). The behavioral-mechanics field would benefit from a richer state-taxonomy of the kind Sayanaadi provides — not just baseline-vs-active but twelve distinct activity-states each producing different micro-behavior patterns. A subject in bhojana state (focused on consumption — eating, drinking, processing information) produces different micro-behaviors than a subject in gamana state (in motion, transit-mode). The convergence: both apparatuses agree that position alone is insufficient diagnostic; activity-state at the position is the operational layer. Hughes's six-channel framework could be enriched by a Sayanaadi-style activity-state classification.
Psychology: Flow States (Csikszentmihalyi) — Flow research distinguishes various activity-states based on the relationship between challenge and skill: anxiety (high challenge, low skill), boredom (low challenge, high skill), flow (matched challenge and skill). The Sayanaadi apparatus offers a richer activity-state taxonomy — twelve states rather than three or four — with each state producing distinct productive registers. A psychological researcher could map the twelve Sayanaadi states onto contemporary flow-research and ask: what would a Prakasana state look like in flow research? A Kautuka state? A Sayana state? The convergence suggests the flow-research framework, while operationally useful, may be under-resolved compared to traditional Hindu activity-taxonomies. Twelve states are likely closer to the actual diversity of productive activity-modes than three.

A character introduced in motion (gamana) reads completely differently than the same character introduced lying down (sayana), sitting in council (sabhaa), or eating (bhojana). The audience reads the character through the activity-state at first appearance. The Sayanaadi apparatus formalizes this directorial intuition: assign a character a twelve-state classification and the writer can systematically vary first-appearance activity-states for diagnostic character-effect. The Sharpest Implication
If you accept the Sayanaadi architecture, position and activity become independent diagnostic layers. The same planet in the same house behaves differently depending on what the planet is doing in that house. Generalize the rule: any agent in any system has a position (structural location) and an activity-state (what they're currently engaged in). Reading the position without the activity-state delivers a shallow diagnosis. The skilled practitioner reads both — which is harder, requires more inputs, and produces correspondingly richer predictions. The twelve activity-states aren't astrological mysticism; they are an early formalization of the position/activity distinction that modern behavioral science is still working to operationalize.
