A few months before her fortieth birthday, Popova decided to start a daily practice. She didn't know why. The form was unusual. Every night I would look at an image — pick a drawing of a bird from those 19th-century ornithological books which I've digitized — and read the ornithological description of the bird. And I would sleep. And then in the morning, certain words would kind of bubble up. And I would make these little poems and cones over the artwork.1
She did this for a hundred nights and hundred mornings. The result is An Almanac of Birds: Divinations for Uncertain Days — a hundred-card deck. Each card is a 19th-century ornithological drawing with one of Popova's morning-poems placed over it.
What she discovered through the practice was something about the writers she was reading. The 19th-century ornithologists. Audubon and the Goulds — these great ornithologists of 19th century — the language they used was just so touching. They would use words like bewildering. I made a hundred of these, and they became this deck of cards. Only out of the joy of this other time, where people saw the world more completely in a way.1
The poets went to scientific lectures. The scientists read — many of them wrote poetry in their journals. It was so much more integrated.
The discovery was historical. There was a period — roughly the 17th through the late 19th centuries — when the people doing what we now call science also did what we now call literature. They drew their own specimens. They wrote in language that aimed at the world more completely rather than at procedural precision. Their journals contained verse. Their scientific papers used words like bewildering without apology, because such words were operationally necessary for describing what they had seen.
The integration ended. By the early 20th century the specialization had fragmented. Scientists wrote technical papers in flattened language. Poets stopped attending scientific lectures. The two professions diverged into mutual incomprehension. Most contemporary working scientists cannot write poetry. Most contemporary working poets cannot read a scientific paper. The integration that produced both Audubon's drawings and his prose has been operationally lost.
Popova is naming a historical reversal that has consequences for what writing can currently do.
The integration she's pointing at had two features that current specialization doesn't preserve. First: the writer-scientist had unusual attention. The discipline of careful observation that produces good science is structurally similar to the attention that produces good poetry. Audubon spent hundreds of hours sitting with specific birds. The sitting produced both the drawings and the prose. Neither was a side-project. Both were what the sitting produced.
Second: the writer-scientist worked in prose that hadn't yet been flattened. The technical-paper register of contemporary science is a 20th-century invention. Before it consolidated, scientific writing could carry whatever language the writer-scientist found necessary. The word bewildering could appear in a careful ornithological description because the bird was, in fact, bewildering, and bewildering was the most accurate word. The contemporary equivalent would say exhibited unusual nesting behavior or some other flat construction that loses the writer's actual encounter with the specimen.
The flattening was a professionalization move. Science became a profession with standards. Literature became a profession with standards. The standards required mutual distinction. The distinction produced specialized languages that couldn't communicate with each other. The cost was the kind of writing that Audubon could do — writing that was both scientifically accurate and alive at the level of language.
The bird-cards are partly a restoration project. The 19th-century ornithological drawings on the cards do the careful-observation work. Popova's morning-poems over them do the language-alive work. Reading the cards together gives the contemporary reader a small window into what writing looked like when both halves were available to the same writer.
The cards aren't a perfect restoration. The drawings are 200 years old. The poems are contemporary. The integration that Audubon ran inside one practitioner has to be reconstructed across two writers separated by two centuries. Still, the reader holding the card gets something the contemporary scientific paper cannot give and the contemporary poem in isolation cannot give — the complete world the bird inhabits, with the bird's actual anatomy and the language-alive encounter with it.
Popova made the cards partly out of grief for what's been lost. She names this almost in passing. Only out of the joy of this other time, where people saw the world more completely. The cards are a small offering against the specialization. They don't reverse the specialization. They preserve one trace of what the integration produced.

The passage will likely include precise anatomical detail. Wing-length. Bill structure. Plumage variation between male and female. The detail is what scientific writing is for. The bird is being recorded carefully so future ornithologists can identify it.
The passage will also include language that contemporary scientific writing would strip out. The bird's temperament. The way the bird moved through the air. The bewildering quality of its display. The writer's emotional response to having watched the bird for an afternoon. The contemporary scientific paper has procedural mechanisms for removing all of this. The 19th-century paper let it stay because removing it would have left the bird less fully described.
A reader of the Audubon passage today has access to a bird the contemporary scientific paper can't quite show. The bird as anatomical-specimen plus the bird as encountered-creature. The doubled access is what Popova means by the world more completely. The contemporary reader has to work harder to assemble the doubled access — pair a current scientific paper with a current nature-essay, sit with both, build the integration in their own head. The 19th-century reader had it given to them by a single writer.
The Audubon passage isn't only a historical artifact. The passage is a model for what writing might do if the science-poetry split were partially undone. Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass attempts this. Loren Eiseley's essays attempt this. Lewis Thomas attempts this. A few writers across the late 20th and early 21st centuries have run small-scale restorations. The model is rare. The model is also valuable, partly because it's rare.
You currently read either science or literature, mostly not both, and not consistently in pairs. Three operational moves to test the integration.
Choose a topic that interests you — birds, geology, weather, the ocean, the body, plants. Find both the scientific current literature on it and the literary current literature on it. The two literatures exist for almost every topic but the bookshelves separate them. Buy one of each.
Read them in parallel. A chapter of the science. A chapter of the literature. The science gives you what's known. The literature gives you what it's like to be a person who's been with the subject. Both. Same week. Same evening if possible.
After a few weeks, notice what your own writing changes. The writers who read both halves write differently from the writers who read only one. The change is sometimes subtle. Over months it becomes substantial. The reader becomes the kind of writer who can carry both registers — the careful-observation register and the alive-language register. The doubled capacity is what writing in the Audubon tradition required.
The move is small. The compounding is what matters. A year of paired reading produces a writer with capacities most contemporary writers don't have. The capacities show in the prose. Readers feel them even when they can't name them.
You've collapsed when your writing operates in one register exclusively. Either careful-observation register without language-alive (the prose is precise and lifeless) or language-alive register without careful-observation (the prose is musical but ungrounded). Both failures are common. Both produce writing that can't quite reach what Audubon could reach.
You're running the integration when your writing carries both halves in the same paragraph. The bird's wing-length and the way the bird's wing-beat produced a specific feeling in the watcher. The historical date and the texture of the room where the date happened. The careful detail and the alive language. The two together is the operation.
The historical record of the science-literature integration is extensive. Audubon. Darwin. Wallace. Humboldt. Goethe's botanical writings. The 19th-century natural-history tradition produced substantial work that fits Popova's description. The historical case is well-supported even when she doesn't cite it.
The tension: the integration may not be fully recoverable. The specialization that fragmented the two traditions was driven partly by the genuine technical complexity of contemporary science. A working immunologist in 2026 can't easily write in Audubon's register because the immunology they're working in requires technical apparatus that doesn't translate. The integration may be recoverable for natural-history-scale subjects (birds, plants, weather) and unrecoverable for cutting-edge technical fields (particle physics, molecular biology, advanced mathematics).
A second tension. The literary writers who attempt the integration sometimes do bad science — pretty prose attached to inaccurate claims. The journalism literature is full of well-written nature-pieces that contain substantial factual errors. The integration requires both halves done well, and most attempts produce only one half competently. The Audubon-standard is rare for a reason. Most aspirants fall short on one side.
Spend a year reading current scientific writing exclusively. Journal articles, popular-science books in the technical mode, science journalism that respects the technical register. You learn substantial science. You experience the world increasingly as system-of-mechanisms. The mechanistic frame is real and useful. The frame also doesn't carry what it feels like to be a person inside the systems.
Spend the same year reading current literary writing exclusively. Novels, essays, memoir, poetry. You experience the world increasingly as texture-of-being-someone. The texture frame is real and useful. The frame doesn't carry what's actually known about how the world works underneath the texture.
Now spend a year reading paired — science and literature on the same subjects, alternating. By year-end you have access to both frames in the same head. The world is both mechanism and texture. Neither displaces the other. You are operating with two cognitive modes available where most contemporary readers have only one.
This is what Audubon had as a working condition. The two modes weren't separated for him. He could write a bird-description that was both. Popova's almanac is a small contemporary recovery of the integration. The recovery is possible at small scale. The full historical integration may not be recoverable at the cultural scale, but individual readers can run it for themselves.
Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass is the strongest contemporary work in the Audubon tradition. Kimmerer is a working botanist and a Potawatomi practitioner; the book pairs scientific botanical observation with indigenous ecological knowledge. Loren Eiseley's The Immense Journey is an older instance — Eiseley was a working anthropologist who wrote essays that integrated science with what would now be called literary nature-writing. Lewis Thomas was a working physician who wrote essays integrating biology with philosophical reflection. Three writers, three eras, all of them running small-scale recoveries of what Audubon's tradition had. The vault should hold all three as the contemporary reference for the integration.
The Audubon tradition shows up in two adjacent territories worth surfacing.
Eastern Spirituality: Jnana and Bhakti as Paired Disciplines — The Indian tradition's pairing of jnana (path of knowledge) and bhakti (path of devotion) is structurally what Audubon ran in the writer's life. Knowledge of the bird and devotion to the bird. Careful observation and felt encounter. The traditions hold that the mature practitioner does both. The Western separation of science and literature is the operational form of running only jnana. The Audubon tradition was running both. The cross-domain insight is that the integration isn't a Western literary specialty; it's a domain-general human achievement that the West fragmented through specific institutional histories. Recovery is possible because the architecture is recoverable.
Behavioral Mechanics: Integrated System 2 and System 1: Elite Practice — The dual-process literature in cognitive science distinguishes analytical-deliberate (System 2) from intuitive-felt (System 1) processing. Elite operators across business, military, and clinical practice run both systems in coordination. The pure-System-2 operator produces correct-on-paper but felt-wrong decisions. The pure-System-1 operator produces felt-right but unreliable decisions. The integration is what produces operational excellence. Audubon was an elite operator at his own scale — the integration of science and literature was the dual-process discipline applied to natural history. The pattern is generalizable. Writers who run only one system produce work the same way the unipolar operator produces decisions.
The Sharpest Implication The 20th-century specialization that produced the modern scientific paper and the modern literary essay as separate forms has operationally narrowed what writing can do. The narrowing is invisible from inside either profession — scientists don't realize their writing has lost something, poets don't realize they've lost the capacity to encounter actual phenomena with technical accuracy. The aggregate effect across a century is that the integrated writers Audubon represented have become rare-and-strange rather than baseline. The fix at the cultural scale would require institutional re-integration — universities that don't fragment science and humanities, publishing structures that reward the doubled register. None of this is currently in motion. The fix at the individual scale is available to any reader willing to run paired reading and any writer willing to develop both halves. Most readers and writers don't run the practice because the institutions haven't trained them to know it's available. The capacity exists. The cultural infrastructure for transmitting it has thinned.
