Śākta Devī Māhātmyam — Map of Content

What This Hub Covers

This hub maps one scripture and the world it opens. The Devī Māhātmyam — also called the Caṇḍī or Durgā Saptaśatī, 700 verses set inside the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa — is the central text of Goddess-worship in India, and a Ramakrishna-lineage Śākta teacher (Nishanth Selvalingam) walks through it across a three-class Navaratri series: the myths (who the Goddess is in story), the liturgy (how a householder actually worships her), and the theology (what it means that a single Śakti creates, becomes, and devours the whole world). The pages here cluster around one radical claim — that there is one Goddess wearing every name, that she is higher than the gods, and that she is reached through sound before sense.

This is a devotional-liturgical center of gravity, distinct from the vault's critical-historical Tantra layer (Yoga & Tantra History Hub), its Śakti-metaphysics (Trika Metaphysics Hub), and its practice mechanics (Sādhana Practice Hub). The teacher's devotional dating-claims contradict the vault's scholarly dating — that tension is preserved here, never resolved (see Key Tensions).

Build status: 83 of 83 PRD candidates BUILT — the batch is COMPLETE (Session 1 = 17 HIGH anchors; Session 2 = +23; Session 3 = +18; Final session = +25 — E5/E6 linguistic, F3/F4/F5 Kālī, B5/B6/B7 frame, and the Pass-2 additions P1–P17). All [pending] tags resolved; every slot is a live link. This hub is the PRD made navigable, now fully realized.

Section I — The Text & Its Apparatus

How the Caṇḍī works as a ritual object, not just a book to read.

Section II — The Frame (Suratha / Samādhi / Medhas)

The story that holds all the other stories — a deposed king, a betrayed merchant, and the sage who explains the Goddess to both.

Section III — Madhu-Kaiṭabha (First Charita) & Icchā

The first demon-killing: two demons born from Viṣṇu's own body, and the will that wakes God from sleep.

Section IV — Core Śākta Theology

The metaphysical heart: one Śakti who is higher than the gods, who is both knowledge and delusion, whose will is the only law.

Section V — Linguistic Mysticism (The Goddess as Sound)

Why the value of the text is in its sound, not its meaning — the alphabet itself is the Goddess.

Section VI — Kālī as Devourer

The dark face: divinity in endings, the cremation ground as the place where the Goddess eats time.

  • Kālī the Devourer: The Cremation Ground — divinity in endings; "your mother eats everything"; time's restaurant | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Terrifying Names of Kālī — Caṇḍī / Cāmuṇḍā / Karālā / Kālarātri; the flinch marks the edge of your God; cross-cultural dark goddess | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Three Acts: Creation, Becoming, Devouring — the spider who is the web; creation and devouring as one breath | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Śrī-Mātā vs Śmaśāna — the two thousand-name hymns; Lalitā = the Goddess at rest, Kālī = the same Goddess in action; two doors into one Goddess | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Holy Mother's Apocalyptic Laughter — Sāradā Devī's aṭṭahāsa (Sanderson); the destroyer inside the comforter; real compassion must be able to burn it all down | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Apocalypse as Revelation — apokalypsis = unveiling; Kālī's destruction strips the veil to bare the real; stay in the stripped place before reclothing | status: stub | sources: 1

Section VII — Durgā & the Navadurgā Forms

The nine forms and their developmental arc — daughter, ascetic, bride, world-womb — plus the meditation-verse icon and the pantheon that bows to her. (Split from the former worship section per the ≤20 cap.)

  • Navadurgā: The Nine Nights — nine forms as the developmental arc through the dark; Kālarātri before the radiance | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Brahmacāriṇī and the Heat of Tapas — the snow-ascetic (form 2); Mars as austerity; tapas as stored heat (furnace not bonfire); even demons fear her | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Candraghaṇṭā and the Wedding — the bride (form 3); Pārvatī flashes Kālī to civilize the wild god; keep the bull, change its direction | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Kūṣmāṇḍā: The Pot-Womb — the world-creatrix (form 4); smiles the cosmic egg; milk/wine/blood; menstruation as creative power; maker IS the made | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Śākta Mythic Structure: The Sādhana Arc — the shape under the forms: tapas → power → birthing into the world; the Śākta return vs the renunciate exit | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Durgā Dhyāna: The Meditation Verse — the verbal icon (storm-cloud, lion, Jaya, the 33 gods); build the presence before you offer | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The 33 Vedic Gods Who Bow to Her — 8 Vasus + 12 Ādityas + 11 Rudras + 2 Aśvins (Śakrādi-stuti); installing a supreme deity by making the establishment salute, not vanish | status: stub | sources: 1

Section VIII — Durgā Pūjā: The Liturgy & Ritual Machinery

The ritual a householder actually runs: the equivalence economy, the clay image, the preparatory interiorization, and the full register from Vedic chant to immersion-cursing. (Split from the former worship section per the ≤20 cap.)

Section IX — Liturgy: The Preparatory Arc (Pass-2 additions)

The deeper machinery of the pūjā — the sequence that turns a room into a cosmos.

  • Feeding the Dead: The Story Heard — pitṛ/bhūta propitiation; the ghost needs its story heard; witnessing-as-feeding; we create our own ghosts by looking away | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The System of Fives: Pāśupata Root — the pentadic correspondence-architecture (offerings↔elements↔faces) traced to the Yajurveda Tryambaka; five is the hinge that makes a flower the cosmos | status: stub | sources: 1
  • From Formless Energy to Anthropomorphic Form — Gaṇeśa had no elephant head in the Vedic period; the gods grew their bodies; a devotional concession of historical development (critical-historical handshake) | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Pūjā as Vibration-Raising: The Manifestation Bridge — "farming aura"; the carefully-held bridge to New-Age manifestation; the container (surrender/discipline) not the mechanism is the difference | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Belur Math Durgā Pūjā: A Vision, Corroborated — the authorizing (corroborated) vision + the rule-honoring workaround; the template for legitimate innovation in a tradition | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Grace Cannot Be Caused: Unfurling the Sail — effort positions, grace arrives; keep the sail up through the calm; full effort and full surrender in one posture | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Tantric Pūjā Preparatory Arc — āchamana → saṅkalpa → vessel → digbandhana → bhūta-śuddhi → nyāsa → deity; construction before invitation; the preparation transforms the preparer | status: stub | sources: 1
  • The Pūjā Deity-Sequence Ending in Śava-Śiva — the worship climbs through the pantheon and ends at a corpse; the still ground beneath the dancing power; the deepest is the least active | status: stub | sources: 1
  • A Thousand Names — a thousand = infinite (exhaustion toward the inexhaustible); register = characterization (Lalitā erotic vs Viṣṇu austere; the key is the path) | status: stub | sources: 1

Section X — Theology & Lineage (Pass-2 additions)

The teacher's living-tradition hermeneutic and the Ramakrishna lineage's claims.

  • The Gods Are Jealous: Opposition to Tapas — Indra/Māra/Christ-desert; serious inner work gets attacked at the brink; the worst resistance is the surest sign you're close | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Nonduality as the Ground of Ethics — advaita derives ought from is (the other IS you, so harming them is self-harm); the positive pole to god-beyond-morality; piece-vs-player safety | status: stub | sources: 1
  • A Living Tradition Reads Itself Through New Frames — Kant/Gödel/quantum as authentic tradition-development; imposing-vs-revealing; the teacher's best hermeneutic undercuts his antiquity-claims | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Sāradā Devī as the Living Goddess — the abstract Goddess made flesh in an actual woman; "what is it for a woman to be God"; the divine veiled in the overlooked; avowed conviction vs analysis | status: stub | sources: 1
  • Vivekananda in the Ruins: No More Mission — Kshir Bhavani; "do you protect me or do I protect you"; the collapse of savior-agency; forceful action from rest, not abdication | status: stub | sources: 1

Section XI — Cross-Source SIGNAL

What only emerges from reading all three classes together.

Key Tensions in This Area

  • Devotional antiquity vs critical-historical dating. The teacher presents the Caṇḍī as 9,000 years old, the oldest religion, datable to ~1000 BCE. The vault's scholarly layer (Samuel, White) dates the Devī Māhātmyam to ~5th–6th c. CE. This is preserved as a live Tension on the relevant pages and (to be) a collision stub — never resolved. Both warrants stand side by side, the same multi-warrant architecture established in the Samuel ingest.
  • God beyond morality vs the vault's ethical pages. The Līlā-amorality reading (God Beyond Morality) and divine-command theory (Divine-Command Theory in Tantra) sit against conventional moral frames; paired with the non-dual ground-of-ethics counterpart (Nonduality as the Ground of Ethics). The piece-vs-player distinction is the load-bearing safety: the same oneness grounds "don't harm" (for the embodied seeker) and "beyond good and evil" (for the Absolute), and the discipline is never to apply the latter from the seeker's level.
  • Deify-don't-vilify vs Western exorcism. Pray to Avidyā propitiates what binds; the Western model expels it. Same demon, opposite move.
  • Quantity vs quality in the substitution-economy. The countable merit-economy invites mechanical counting; held against the sincerity-teaching.
  • Is "the world is auspicious" a contradiction of the Buddhist/Advaitic world-as-suffering, or a reframing of it? Open question filed to META (final session).

Structural Notes

  • Hub-as-PRD scaffold, now fully realized. This hub was built up front from the locked PRD (WORKBENCH/reading/devi-mahatmyam-sakta-batch-prd.md). All 83 candidates are BUILT — the batch is COMPLETE (Session 1 = 17 HIGH anchors, Session 2 = +23, Session 3 = +18, Final session = +25). No [pending] tags remain.
  • covers count = 83 (all built).
  • Section size: every ## section is ≤20 entries per the hub-architecture cap. Session 3 split the former Section VII (Durgā/worship, which had reached the 20-entry ceiling) into Section VII — Durgā & the Navadurgā Forms (7) and Section VIII — Durgā Pūjā: The Liturgy & Ritual Machinery (13); the Pass-2 sections renumbered to IX/X/XI. No ## section currently exceeds 20.
  • Dating quarantine is load-bearing. Do not let any future page silently adopt the teacher's antiquity-claim as vault fact.
