Sound as Prose Musicality: Sculpting Time with Syntax

You Read It Aloud and You Can Hear What's Off

You finish a paragraph. The argument's right. The Tone is engineered. Subtext is doing its work. You read it aloud — and you hear something flat. A drone. Every sentence in roughly the same range. Same length. Same beat. Nothing chimes.

The problem is at a layer most writing advice ignores. "SOUND is the musicality of syntax. If you were to deflate words of all their meaning, you could still arrange gibberish into sublime rhythms."1 Sound runs underneath meaning. Strip the words of semantic content and the rhythm stays — or fails to stay.

Michael Deen's chapter on Sound makes the case that prose has three sonic dimensions you can engineer:

Repetition (8.1) — looping words or phrases to associate and connect ideas. Rhythm (8.2) — varying sentence-length to control pacing. Rhyme (8.3) — phonetic resonance between nearby words.

Each one "is using sound as a form of disruption. Dull prose has minimal looping, droning sentences, and phonetic flatness. When you stamp a phrase, include a run-on, or drop an alliteration, you draw attention to the idea beneath the syntax."1

Sound isn't decoration. Sound is the spotlight. Where you put musical disruption is where the reader's attention lands.

Repetition: Stamps, Loops, Mirrors

Most editing advice says cut repetition. Concise writing. Strunk and White. Deen pushes back: "Modern writing is often optimized for efficient, economic prose; it reviews all repetition as a redundancy to cut. This misses the point."1

The kind of repetition that should be cut: accidentally making the same point twice in different sentences. That's redundancy. Kill it.

The kind that should be deployed: strategic syntactic repetition. Three forms:

Stamps — identical phrasing within a single sentence. "From bible verses to historic speeches, repetition has been a mnemonic device to make ideas memorable, too."1 When a phrase recurs, it creates a simple frame that helps the reader connect ideas.

Loops — identical phrasing across multiple sentences. The same opening or closing clause running across two or three consecutive sentences, signaling: these are related.

Mirrors — symmetrical forms. A→B at the start, B→A at the end. The shape itself tells the reader something about the relationship.

Annie Dillard's Total Eclipse uses a stamp to mount emphasis: "It began with no ado. It was odd that such a well-advertised public event should have no starting gun, no overture, no introductory speaker."1 The first sentence makes the claim. The second gives three examples — and the recurring "no" explicitly connects general to specific. You could write this without repetition: "It was odd that such a well-advertised event would begin without a bang, song, or speech." You lose the build-up and the elegance.

Most prose does not repeat. So when you do, "it is disruptive and climactic."1 That's the function. Repetition isn't redundancy; it's signal. The reader hears the loop and gets that you've marked something as important.

Rhythm: Sentence-Length as Tempo

This is where Deen gets specific. Rhythm operates at several scales — words, sentences, paragraphs. The basic advice is "alternate sentence length," but Deen extends it.

Think of sentence-length as resolutions: XS / S / M / L / XL. The shortest are punchy. The longest unfurl. By constantly shifting "the container shape and size for your ideas, you create a sense of dynamism and forward momentum."1

The two extremes do different work: Short sentences allow the reader to quickly download meaning. Long sentences expand the resolution of an idea.

"Rhythm, like in music, is about sculpting time. It is both a texture and a syncopation; when you make abrupt changes to your container, you create a spotlight on an idea."1

The example: Joan Didion's On Keeping a Notebook. "There are 133 sentences; the average one is ~26 words. She has her fair share of short sentences: 10% of them are 5 words or under. They read like this."1 But Didion also features "an epic run-on sentence (filled with parenthesis, em-dashes, and colons and semi-colons) that goes on for 182 words (longer than 75% of her paragraphs). It is not just flashy, it serves a purpose: it outlines three kinds of entries in her notebook, and gives three examples of each (in varying detail). We lucidly get it, and the next sentence — 94% shorter — distills it."1

The rule: "Whatever your average sentence length, consider including some that are 7x shorter or longer."1 If you're averaging 20-word sentences, occasionally drop a 3-word punch or unfurl a 140-word build.

The 5/5 rubric for Rhythm: "Hits the extremes of compression and expansion, with constantly oscillating sentence form."1

The implementation move: after reading a sentence, consider (a) what idea comes next, and (b) given the last sentence, what is an ideal size and shape for the next? If your last sentence is L (long) with a theory, you have two directions. Write an XL complex list sentence that enumerates examples. Or drop a quick S sentence to compress the phenomenon. Another trick: "break out each sentence on its own line, so you can 'read the right edge' to visualize and edit your rhythm."1 Or, more simply: read it out loud.

Rhyme: Phonetic Resonance

Poetry has stanzas with explicit rhyme schemes. Prose works differently. "In addition to standard rhyme (matching end syllables) and alliteration (matching front syllables), prose writing is more concerned with assonance (vowels) and consonance (consonants)."1

Deen builds a more granular vocabulary. Each syllable has three parts (this is phonology): an onset (opening consonant), a nucleus (middle vowel), a coda (closing consonant). Phonetic matches can occur at any of these three positions across nearby words.

Two named concepts:

Mellifluence"the strength, location of, and proximity of matches." Strong matches close together produce mellifluence.

Sonicity"your density of mellifluence (strength divided by length)."1 But Deen warns: "you want to be more concerned with placement: using rhyme in high-leverage moments." Density alone doesn't matter. Placement does.

Annie Dillard's Total Eclipse paragraph, with phonetic matches bolded by Deen: "It looked as though we had all gathered on hilltops to pray for the world on its last day. It looked as though we had all crawled out of spaceships and were preparing to assault the valley below. It looked as though we were scattered on hilltops at dawn to sacrifice virgins, make rain, set stone stelae in a ring. There was no place out of the wind. The straw grasses banged our legs."1 Twenty-one resonant words in five sentences. Over four per sentence. None of them predictable or trite. Read aloud, the musicality emerges — and the engineering is invisible until you look for it.

Why bother? "The sonic qualities of prose are often ignored in nonfiction, but readers process with their ears as much as their eyes. William Zinsser says, 'good writers of prose must be part poet, always listening to what they write.'"1 Montaigne, founder of the essay form: "The best ancient prose shines throughout with the vigor and boldness of poetry... To poetry we must certainly concede mastery and preeminence in speech. The old theology is poetry, the scholars say, and the first philosophy. It is the original language of the Gods."1

The 5/5 rubric for Rhyme: "Sound is used to make ideas beautiful and clear."1

The implementation move: find the most important sentences in your essay. Read them over and over. Notice the sonic patterns that are already emerging. For the flat ones, consider synonyms that tap into a shared sound palette. "Find one word to use as an anchor, and break it down into its parts (ie: 'musically' = (M-Yew-) * (Ss-Ih-K) * (L-ee-). There are 7 options in this one word. Now, look for synonyms in nearby words that tap into this palette of possible sounds."1 This feels mechanical at first. Eventually it becomes automatic.

How the Three Sub-Patterns Compose

Repetition loops. Rhythm varies. Rhyme resonates. The three work together to create the overall Sound texture — what would remain musical even if you stripped the meaning.

The high-leverage placement: the Melody (3.3) of the title; the Hook (6.3) of the essay; the Finale (4.3) of each paragraph. "Prime locations for concentrated sonic attention."1 These are the spotlights. Sound engineering at these points produces disproportionate effect on the reader.

Sound Failure Modes

Monotone: Sentences all the same length. The reader's nervous system drones out. The fix: vary sentence length. Include some 7x shorter or longer than your average.

Forced alliteration: Three words starting with the same letter, called attention to themselves. The fix: shift to assonance or consonance — internal sonic matches that resonate without being obvious.

Repetition-as-redundancy vs. repetition-as-signal: Two sentences making the same point through different wording is redundancy. Cut. Two sentences using the same opening clause to flag a relationship is signal. Keep.

No high-leverage Sound: The essay is technically correct but unmemorable. The fix: target your important sentences — the Finale, the Hook, the climax — and engineer Rhyme and Rhythm into them specifically.

Over-engineering everywhere: Sound effects in every sentence. Reads as ornamental, exhausting. The fix: place sonic attention strategically; let most sentences be plain so the engineered ones stand out.

Implementation: The Sound Pass

Read the draft aloud: Mark every sentence that drones. Most rhythm failures are inaudible on the page; they're obvious in the ear.

Break sentences onto separate lines: "Read the right edge" — the spatial profile of your sentence-lengths becomes visible. Look for runs of similar lengths. Break the pattern.

Find your important sentences: For each, ask: does this carry sound? Where could you swap a word for a synonym that produces phonetic resonance with the surrounding text?

Insert one stamp, loop, or mirror per major section: Find a place where you're explaining a list of related ideas. Add identical phrasing across them. Watch the cohesion emerge.

Pair Sound with Subtext: The most powerful sentences in great essays have both — phonetic music and implied meaning. The reader hears the rhythm and feels the implication.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Where Deen converges with Lucas Alpay on neurochemical pacing: Alpay's cognitive-acceleration-sentence-pacing page argues that descending sentence length accelerates reader processing by 73% (Stanford research). Deen's Rhythm framework agrees that compression accelerates, but extends the claim — sentence length isn't only about cognitive acceleration. It's about sculpting time and spotlighting specific ideas. Alpay reads sentence-length as throttle on neurochemical cascade. Deen reads it as compositional dynamic. Both are right. The convergence reveals that Sound craft and neuroscience are describing the same mechanism from different vocabularies: variable rhythm is processed differently by the reader's brain than uniform rhythm, and the differences are measurable. Deen names the aesthetic dimension; Alpay names the chemical one.

Where Deen separates from Strunk and White: the classic concise-prose tradition treats repetition as redundancy by default. Cut it. Make every word earn its keep. Deen rejects this for strategic repetition. "From bible verses to historic speeches, repetition has been a mnemonic device."1 The split surfaces a real tension in writing pedagogy: the concise-prose ethic and the rhetorical-prose ethic don't fully agree about what's a virtue. Strunk and White prepare you to write technical reports. Deen prepares you to write essays that get repeated out loud. The two traditions are pointing at different targets.

The split is in operationalization — Zinsser teaches by ear; Deen teaches by phonological decomposition. For some writers, the analytical framework will be liberating. The mechanism is universal: human cognition processes sound through pathways that are largely independent of lexical-semantic processing, and producers who engineer for sonic effect produce work that operates on receivers through channels they don't consciously notice. Sound isn't ornamental. It's parallel-channel cognitive engineering. Writers who don't engineer Sound are publishing through one channel when two are available.

The Live Edge

The Sharpest Implication: If Sound runs underneath meaning, then most nonfiction writing is leaving a significant lever untouched. Writers focus on argument, structure, voice — and never address whether the prose sings. The Sound layer is invisible to writers who don't read aloud and inaudible to readers who don't notice rhythm consciously. But the rhythm is felt. Essays that don't engineer Sound are processed correctly and forgotten quickly. Essays that engineer Sound at the high-leverage points are remembered for years. The asymmetry is huge. Adding Sound discipline to a draft is one of the highest-leverage moves available, and it requires no new ideas — just a different revision pass.

Generative Questions:

  • Phonology gives precise vocabulary for prose sound (onset/nucleus/coda; mellifluence; sonicity). Are there other domains — speech pathology, voice-acting, audio-engineering — that have developed even more granular tools for prose sound that essay-craft hasn't yet imported?
  • The high-leverage sonic moments (title, hook, finale, paragraph closes) suggest sound matters most at structural inflection points. Is this reader-perception or writer-engineering — does the reader's nervous system inherently weight these moments, or has it been trained by the convention?
  • The 7x rule (some sentences should be 7x shorter or longer than your average) is intuitively elegant but underivable. Is there a real cognitive-processing constraint that makes 7x specifically the right ratio, or is this a heuristic Deen has converged on through practice?

Cross-Source: Macfarlane — Rhythm in Non-Fiction + Heaney Palp-and-Heft (2026-05-16)

Non-fiction has this weird name — non-fiction, the thing that it isn't.4 Macfarlane's diagnosis: the genre's misnaming is part of why readers don't expect it to be rhythmic, and why writers don't build rhythm into it. Deen articulates the technique-catalogue (repetition, rhythm, rhyme); Macfarlane articulates why deploying the techniques against the reader-default is required at all. Deen's technique-catalogue operates inside Macfarlane's metaphysical frame: sound works on a deeper cognitive layer than propositional language, and non-fiction has been misled by its name into ignoring this. Both writers treat sound-engineering as load-bearing rather than decorative. Both treat rhythm-built prose as the prose that survives. The pedagogical implication: non-fiction writers should be taught rhythm with the same seriousness fiction-writers and poets are taught it.
