Every board is hung on a hidden metal clamp so that the slightest weight makes it chirp like a bird. Now no one can cross his hall without announcing himself. He sleeps. Then the assassin learns to unroll a long cloth sash ahead of his feet and walk on the cloth, so the boards never feel his bare step. The lord, hearing the silence return, scatters dry rice across the same hallway, because rice pops under any weight that the cloth can't soften. The assassin stops walking on the floor at all and climbs into the rafters overhead. Then he steals the rice trick for himself — and from that night on he sprinkles rice behind his own back as he creeps forward, so that the man who tries to sneak up on the sneak will betray himself with a pop.1
That back-and-forth is the whole concept in one breath. Moving silently inside a building is never a single skill you learn once. It is an arms race. The moment one side invents a way to hear you, the other invents a way to go quiet again, and the first side answers by inventing a new way to listen. Lung frames it as a perimeter-and-structures problem and then drives inward. Outside, you read shadows and overhangs to stay unseen.
