Picture the worst moment a samurai could find himself in. He has been knocked off the deck of a fighting boat in the middle of a river crossing, or he has jumped in on purpose to drag a wounded lord back to the ship, and he is now underwater. He is wearing a full suit of armor — plates of iron and lacquered leather laced together, a helmet, a sword, maybe a bow. Every instinct says that man drowns. He does not. He has trained for exactly this, in a deep pond dug behind the practice hall on his clan's grounds, for years, until staying afloat in iron is as ordinary to him as walking. He can tread water in armor long enough to fight. He can swim a mile in it at night, far from shore, and come up onto an enemy beach. He can hold a bow above the surface, keep the arrow feathers dry, and shoot a man dead from the water. This is suieijutsu — military swimming — and it was a real, named, taught martial art with at least eight competing schools, each guarding its own secret style.1

What This Actually Is

This is the human art of swimming and fighting in the water while armored — staying afloat under the weight of a full panoply, swimming long distances, treading water for hours, and using the warrior's weapons (bow, sword, spear, even firearms) while immersed.2 It is the body's own technique, not the boat's and not the horse's. The samurai also swam his horse across rivers as part of mounted skill, but that belongs to Bajutsu — Military Horsemanship; here the swimmer is the man himself, alone in deep water with iron on his back. The fighting boats — the kobaya and seki-bune, the spiked boarding planks, the arrow-stream maritime tactics — appear in this page only as the world the swimmer fell into and out of, the reason a warrior needed this skill at all.

The formal name for the core competence was katchu-gozen-oyogi — swimming while outfitted in heavy armor.3 Schools teaching it "mushroomed" in feudal Japan, usually attached to a particular clan, a few of them independent. They were busiest during the long Tokugawa peace, when training for combat had become a substitute for combat itself. The buke "always paid great attention to maritime defense," and the reason was a specific trauma: the Mongol invasions.6 Those invasions taught the Japanese warrior not to wait passively on the beach and counterattack after the enemy had landed, but to go out and engage enemy forces while they were still poised offshore or struggling to reach the shore. Begin with the general specialists. The Kobori (Kobo) ryu of Kyushu refined armor-swimming "to an exceptional degree" — the school that took the core discipline, katchu-gozen-oyogi, furthest. The Suifu ryu became famous for the longest, hardest version of swimming: long distances, often at night, even far from shore. That is not crossing a river; that is covering open water in the dark in armor, the swimming of an infiltrator or a raider.

Then the rivers. The Mukai ryu and the Shinden ryu accumulated a body of knowledge for "mastering the strong currents of rivers" — moving water, the kind that drowns the unprepared, demanding technique against the current rather than mere flotation. And the open sea made the Kankai ryu "justly famous" — its signature technique was maki-ashi, swimming semi-erect with a "circular and powerful movement of the legs," a style mentioned even in the epic literature of the martial arts.

Add the banner-bearer's specialty. The Yamanouchi ryu was famous for teaching a warrior to swim while carrying the long pole of his clan's banner — keeping the colors up and visible while crossing water, a piece of battlefield signaling done from the swimming position.

Here is why this is the perfect case study. The eight schools are a taxonomy of water rendered as institutions. River current, lake, open sea, long-distance night swim, the banner carry, the standing swim with hands free — each became a school because each is a genuinely different physical problem, and the secret style was the answer to that specific problem. The whole field is a map of the country's water drawn in the form of rival lineages. And the maki-ashi and the sensu-morogaeshi tell you the deep secret of all of it: the prized skill is not propulsion, it is stability — staying upright, unmoved, hands free, in water that wants to pull you down and turn you over. The hardest thing in armor is not going forward. It is staying level long enough to use your hands.

That free-hands position is the whole point of the training, because now you can do something other than survive.

You read the current. This is moving water, and you have the river school's knowledge for it — you do not try to cross straight against the strong pull but work with it, letting it carry you down as you angle across, the current becoming a road rather than a wall. If you carry the clan banner you keep its long pole up out of the water in the Yamanouchi style, your colors visible to your own men on both banks. If you carry your bow, you keep it and its arrows lifted clear, because everything depends on the feathers staying dry — wet fletching means no control over the arrow's flight, and a bow you cannot aim is just a stick.

Now the far bank, and this is where swimming becomes fighting. An enemy is on the shore above you. From the water, holding yourself level with the leg-kick alone, you raise the bow in your free hands and you shoot — dry feathers, controlled trajectory, a killing arrow loosed by a man who is, impossibly, treading deep water in armor. Or you close the last yards and come up out of the river with your sword already moving, because on any solid surface, even a rocking one, the armored bushi is back in his element. The crossing is not the interruption of the battle. The crossing is the battle, fought from inside the water by a man who trained for years not to drown in it.

The first failure is fighting the weight instead of riding it. The untrained or half-trained man in armor treats the water as an emergency and thrashes — arms flailing, body horizontal, all motion and no stability. The diagnostic is panic-as-technique: a swimmer who is working hard and going nowhere, whose hands are busy keeping his face above water and therefore useless for anything else. The second failure is the wet bowstring and the wet feathers — the small neglect that turns a water-warrior back into a swimmer. The whole value of shooting from the water depends on keeping the arrow's fletching dry; let it get wet and "control over their trajectory" is gone, and the man who trained for years to fight from the river is reduced to a man merely trying to get out of it.9 The diagnostic is a warrior who can stay afloat but can no longer do anything from afloat — flotation achieved, function lost.

The third failure is institutional and it killed the art itself: secrecy starving the lineage. Each school's style was a closely guarded secret, passed within a clan, hoarded against rivals. That secrecy was capital while the schools competed, but it was lethal over the long run — when the wars ended and the need faded, the styles had no broad base to survive in, and "few of these specializations have survived."10 The diagnostic for a dying art is exactly this: knowledge so tightly held that when its holders go, it goes with them. The persistence of the standing swim "even today" among a small coterie of experts gives a living thread back to the feudal practice. The softer ground is the maritime numbers and the heroic frame. The vessel taxonomy — forty-six types of boat, the crew counts of the kobaya and seki-bune rising to two hundred-plus men — comes through Bonar's 1887 reading of the Wakan Senyoshu, a chain of transmission worth flagging: a nineteenth-century Western explainer reporting a classic text.12 The crew arithmetic is precise to a suspicious degree and should be read as the text's own schema rather than verified muster rolls. The 1907 competition Matsudaira describes — red caps and white, straw swords, head-plates broken to mark defeat — is genuine evidence that something of the water-combat tradition survived into the modern school system, but it is a sportified, safe descendant, and how faithfully it mirrors feudal water-fighting is an open question.13

The genuine unresolved tension is about transmission and loss. The source insists most of these styles did not survive — superseded by modern amphibious warfare or absorbed in a general way into modern competitive swimming, at which Japanese athletes excel.14 But it also reports living practitioners of sensu-morogaeshi and a Meiji-era school curriculum that still tested water skill with military character. So which is it — a dead art or a thinned-out survivor? The honest answer is both, unresolved: the combat application died with the wars and the secrecy, while fragments of the technique persisted, demilitarized, as exercise and sport. On the other side they write it as an elegy. The recurring note is loss: the fierce inter-school secrecy, the grand tournaments before the shogun where twenty-five swimmers from each major school competed for three days, and then the flat verdict that "unfortunately, few of these specializations have survived."16 The same secrecy that made the schools formidable is what doomed them, and the authors clearly feel the waste of it — a whole technical repertoire, so closely tied to a vanished age of armor and amphibious feudal war, mostly gone.

Where the two feelings converge is on the island-people frame that opens the section: swimming as "almost as natural and necessary as breathing" for the Japanese, the modern pearl-divers and fishermen as living proof of a national affinity for the water.17 That frame lets the authors hold both the admiration and the elegy at once — the art is gone as combat, but the deeper aptitude it grew from never left, surfacing now in the diving women and the Olympic swimmers. The convergence is a quiet argument: the warrior-swimming died, but the water-people who made it possible did not, and that is why fragments could survive at all. The Sharpest Implication A whole martial art existed to answer one fixed, removable-by-no-one constraint: the warrior could not take off his armor, and the water would not go away. That is the durable lesson, and it generalizes past Japan and past swimming. When a domain is defined by a burden that cannot be set down — a regulation, a body, a terrain, a caste obligation — the serious response is never to pretend the burden away.
