Author Background

Kazumi Tabata is a Grand Master in Shotokan and Shorinji styles of Karate. Sent to the United States in the 1960s by his teacher Isao (Hisao) Obata — senior student of Gichin Funakoshi and first Chief Director of the Japan Karatedo Federation — to promote Karate in the U.S. Founded and serves as Chief Instructor of the North American Karate Federation (NAKF, Boston-based), with schools across the United States, Bermuda, and Europe. Established the New England Collegiate Karate Conference. Trained local Boston-area tactical police forces. Hosted the first Boston-Asian Festival in 1993. Studied etiquette, Okinawan Kobudo, and Zen alongside karate.
