A bee leaves the hive with one objective. Sugar. That's the entire content of its intention, as far as anything can be said to be a bee's intention.
And on the way it pollinates a forest.
The forest is not a side effect the bee is aware of, tolerates, or would defend. It's not in the plan. It is, however, overwhelmingly the more consequential outcome — remove the bee and you don't lose some sugar, you lose the forest.
Pashupati uses this twice, and it's the human application of the multi-function principle:
Nothing has one function. The bee goes after nectar, but it pollinates the whole forest.1
The first application is a student.
A college kid tells him he's ashamed not to have the money — the next-level course is ₹60,000 — and that he's going to figure out how to make it and join the next batch.2
Pashupati's reading isn't about the course:
Just with the desire for coming to your course and earning sixty thousand, he would have solved so many other problems in his life — just with that simple goal. Nothing has one function.3
And the specific pollination he predicts: the boy's purpose in making money is not to spend it on discos and pubs but to do this programme, and that reorientation changes things across his ecosystem.4
[UNVERIFIED] as an outcome — the boy is a story, and we never learn what happened. 🚩 The teacher also profits if the boy succeeds, which is worth holding.
What survives the flags is the structure: an eighteen-year-old who has to solve an earning problem will learn things that have nothing to do with the reason he started. That's not a claim about the course. It's a claim about what happens to a person who acquires a concrete objective that's slightly beyond them.
The second application is stronger because the man is in the room and the outcome is visible.
Pratish's shame — at consuming constantly and creating nothing — produced one video. And Pashupati's reading:
This is what I mean. It's not just one thing has one function. Your shame had so many functions. You see now you're pollinating a whole industry of people who are ethical businessmen, who truly understand morals and dharma.5
Trace what the single act did. It produced a video. It produced a channel. It produced a community. It produced, by his account, a headache in a viewer that wouldn't resolve until that person started creating. It produced the podcast this transcript comes from. And it produced a body of teaching now circulating among people Pratish will never meet.
None of that was the objective. The objective was: I am disgusted with myself and I need to stop consuming.
The nectar was relief. The forest is everything downstream.
The obvious objection: this is survivorship. Plenty of people chase a goal and pollinate nothing, and the bee metaphor is what you say afterwards about the ones that worked.
Fair, and the principle survives it in a narrower form.
The claim isn't that every goal produces a forest. It's that you cannot evaluate a goal by its stated payoff, because the stated payoff is the nectar and you have no visibility into the pollination in advance. Which cuts both ways: it means some goals are worth vastly more than they appear, and it means you can't identify which ones by looking at the payoff.
So the selection criterion changes. Not what will this get me — that's the nectar, and it's the small part. Instead: what territory does pursuing this take me through, and is that territory worth crossing?
The boy's ₹60,000 is a good goal on that criterion regardless of the course, because the territory is learning to earn and that's worth crossing for an eighteen-year-old. Pratish's video is a good goal because the territory is making things and putting them out, and everything he now has came from being in that territory rather than from the video.
A goal whose only value is its payoff has one function, and this whole page is about why that's the anomaly.
Worth dwelling on the part of the metaphor that's easy to skip, because it's what makes the principle hard to use.
The bee has no representation of the forest. It cannot be motivated by pollination, cannot optimise for it, cannot report on it, and would not recognise the forest as its own doing if you showed it.
Which means the mechanism requires the operator's ignorance of it. The bee pollinates because it is single-mindedly after sugar — a bee trying to pollinate would be a worse bee, drifting between plants on some theory of coverage rather than following the concentrated reward that happens to route it correctly.
That's the uncomfortable structural feature. The nectar has to be genuinely wanted. A goal pursued half-heartedly because you've read that goals produce byproducts will take you through the territory without the intensity that makes passage productive — you'll be in the field and not really looking at the cows.
So the principle can be understood and probably can't be operated. The right use of it isn't to select goals for their pollination; it's to stop dismissing goals whose stated payoff looks small, and to stop optimising the path once you're on one. Both of those are permissions rather than strategies, which is the most this metaphor can honestly license.
You're deciding between two projects and you've built the comparison the way you always do.
Column one: expected outcome. Column two: effort. The bigger project wins on outcome and loses badly on effort, and you've been stuck on the arithmetic for a week.
So you add a third column and it isn't about outcome at all: what will I have to learn, meet, or become to do this?
The safe project: nothing. You can do it now. That's why it's safe, and it's why the column is empty.
The bigger one: you'd have to actually understand the technical side rather than gesturing at it. You'd have to talk to about fifteen people you don't know. You'd have to build a way of working that survives a six-month timeline, which you've never done.
Three items, and none of them are the payoff. All of them are yours permanently whether the project succeeds.
That reframes the comparison entirely, because you were weighing two outcomes and one of them came with three capabilities attached. And it also tells you what to do if you pick the safe one: you'd better find the territory somewhere else, because a year of projects with an empty third column is a year of nectar and no forest.
The question you keep: not what does this get me, but where does it take me through.
The version he doesn't flag as an instance is the best one, because he lived it and the pollination is documented across his own life.
He wanted to make a sculpture of a cow. That's the nectar — one object, one skill problem.
What he did was go and live with cows, drawing them in the heat, getting chased, getting poked.6 And what he got back was: sculptures that sold out, an understanding he calls the mystical level of knowledge about cows, a relationship with his grandfather's claim that cows are magical animals, a friendship with a man who wrote a book about them, and — this is the part that matters here — the entire methodology he now teaches for understanding an audience.
The cow-sculpture material is the load-bearing example on his audience-research page. Everything he says about not researching people on the internet, about going to their physical spaces, about knowing everything about them, comes from a decision to fix one bad sculpture.
He went after nectar. The forest is a teaching method he's still using thirty years later.
And note that the forest was only available because he went to the field. Copying images off the internet would have eventually produced a competent cow, which is the nectar, and nothing else. The pollination required physical passage through the territory — which is the strongest available argument that the third column isn't a nice bonus but the actual mechanism.
The metaphor is warm and the mechanism is neutral, which the source never acknowledges.
If a single-minded pursuit produces effects across systems it wasn't aimed at, those effects are not selected for being beneficial. They're just downstream. A person chasing one goal at full intensity also pollinates their relationships, their health, their attention, and the people around them — and some of that pollination is damage.
His own material contains the case without flagging it. Fifteen years of making videos for the whole world produced, alongside everything else, a body he says he ruined — the blue light, the gout, the hair. That's pollination too. The forest included some things he now feels shame about.
Which sharpens the third-column test from the workflow above. What will I have to learn, meet, or become to do this? is the optimistic half. The honest version has a second line: what will this cost that I'm not counting, and who else is downstream of it?
Neither is forecastable in detail, which is the point of the whole principle. But asking only the first question turns a neutral mechanism into a motivational one, and that's a misreading the metaphor invites.
Evidence. The cow case is strong because the pollination is traceable and long-term: a documented line from a bad sculpture to a teaching methodology, with no intention connecting them.
Tension — survivorship. Documented above. The principle holds in the narrower form and not in the optimistic one.
Tension — the commercial edge. Both stated instances involve someone paying him or promoting him. The structure would be more convincing from a disinterested example, and he doesn't offer one.
Open question. Can you deliberately choose territory without collapsing back into optimising for payoff? The moment you select a goal because of the pollination, you've made the pollination the objective — and it's not clear the mechanism works when it's the target rather than the byproduct.
Set this against Krisang's Kriyā as the Only Path to Gyāna and the two men have the same finding with different emphasis.
Krisang's claim is epistemic: knowledge is produced by action and never by consumption alone. You cannot learn the thing by watching forty videos; you have to do it.
This page says something adjacent and broader — action produces more than the knowledge it was aimed at. The doing generates capabilities, relationships, and understanding across systems the doer wasn't targeting.
Held together they explain why the difference between people who do things and people who plan things compounds so violently. It isn't that the doers learn faster. It's that each completed action pollinates, and the pollination accumulates over years into a difference that looks like talent and is actually just accumulated passage.

The creator-economy corpus documents the "luck surface area" idea at length — the claim that outcomes arrive from unpredictable directions and that the controllable variable is how much surface you expose. Moses on luck as manufacturable; the general finding that the useful opportunity almost never comes from the channel you built for it.
The bee is the mechanism underneath that observation.
The insight the pairing produces is a correction to how luck surface gets pursued. The creator-economy version tends toward breadth — more posts, more platforms, more conversations, more exposure, on the theory that more surface catches more luck. The bee suggests the opposite: the pollination came from going somewhere specific and staying, not from being widely exposed. He didn't meet more people; he went and stood in a field for weeks. Which predicts that depth in an unusual territory generates more unforecastable value than breadth across a familiar one — because the forest is made of things you can only encounter by being in somewhere, and broad shallow exposure is precisely how you avoid ever being in anywhere.

The slow-creativity corpus argues that rushing degrades work and that the compressed timeline is usually avoidance rather than ambition. Its case is mostly about quality — the fast thing is worse.
The bee supplies a different and stronger argument for slowness, and one the presence corpus doesn't make.
Speed doesn't only degrade the output — it eliminates the pollination. A goal pursued at maximum efficiency is a goal pursued along the shortest path, and the shortest path is precisely the one that passes through no territory. The cow sculpture done efficiently is done from reference images in an afternoon; you get the nectar and nothing else. Which means the case for slowness isn't primarily aesthetic. It's that the byproducts are the larger part of the return, and they're only collected by passage — so optimising the path is optimising away most of what the work was going to give you.
Sharpest implication. You cannot evaluate a goal by its stated payoff, because the payoff is the nectar and the forest is invisible in advance. Which makes the standard comparison — expected outcome against effort — a comparison of the small parts of two things, and explains why the projects people are gladdest to have done are so rarely the ones that scored well on it.
