Within ninety seconds you are somewhere else — replaying an argument from Tuesday, drafting a reply you'll never send, picturing how the launch goes wrong, narrating a small triumph to an imaginary audience. You didn't decide to go there. You got swept there. The source calls this being sucked into "the simulator" — the default mode network — and being carried along by a string of "mini movies."1 None of it is happening. All of it feels urgent. And while you're riding the train, the actual work in front of you, the actual room you're sitting in, has gone dark.

The whole skill, the source says, is noticing the difference: knowing when you're in the simulator and when you're not.1 Not stopping the trains — they keep coming.
