Three Ways to Move, and a Lost Training Manual Recovered

The Greeks did not just exercise — they classified exercise, with the precision of a science. Galēnós, the 2nd-century physician, sorted every movement into three groups by how it is performed.1 First, eutónos ("vigorous," also "strong") — exercises "which require strength and power but are grinding exercises." Second, takhýs ("rapid") — "done without force, but with speed." Third, sphódros ("violent") — "done with force and speed combined."2 Strength, speed, and the explosive fusion of both: three categories that map cleanly onto how a modern strength coach thinks, written down eighteen centuries ago. As Galēnós put it: "some are violent, strong, and vigorous, some are light, swift and intense, or violent and rapid at the same time."3

What makes this remarkable is that Galēnós, who disparaged athletes, preserved their training system — and through him a whole lost library of Greek strength-and-conditioning survives. From Íkkos of Tárantos (who "wrote the first textbook on training" around 444 BCE) "for seven hundred years a long, diversified series of books and manuals on athletic training were written. Almost all of this has disappeared."4 The Galenic taxonomy and its exercise lists are a recovered fragment of one of the ancient world's great practical sciences.

What This Actually Is: The Three Categories and Their Exercises

The genius of the taxonomy is that it classifies by quality of effort, not by body part — there were "no isolated muscle exercises, but full body motion with resistance training."5 Galēnós lists each category in concrete detail:

Eutónos (vigorous/strong) — twenty-one grinding strength exercises: digging with a pickaxe; picking up and carrying something heavy; walking uphill; rope-climbing with hands and feet; hanging from a rope or beam; isometric holds (arms straight up or out, fists closed, with or without haltères); partner-resisted holds; and a long series of wrestling-specific strength drills — breaking loose from a waist-lock, holding a man trying to escape, picking up and carrying or swinging a bent-over partner, chest-to-chest pushing, leg-entwining and chokeholds.6 The list is a complete grappling strength-and-conditioning programme.

Takhýs (rapid) — twelve speed exercises done without heavy force: running; skiamakhía (shadow-boxing); akrokheirízein (light sparring at arm's length); kórykomakhía (bag-work); throwing and catching a ball while running; ekpletherízein (shuttle runs that narrow over time); rapid arm-fluttering on the balls of the feet; rapid rolling in the skámma; bíbasis (jumping and kicking the legs backward); alternate leg-kicks; rapid arm movements increasing in speed.7

Sphódros (violent) — five exercises fusing force and speed: digging rapidly; casting the dískos; jumping repeatedly without rest; throwing heavy spears and moving fast in heavy armour; and any eutónos exercise executed rapidly.8

Plus a set of "other" exercises (walking, hip-bending, weight-lifting, long holds, "full and loud breathing," and a cross-body two-weight pick-up drill).9 The whole system also recognized body typesskleròs (hard), malakós (soft), araiòs (loose, air-and-fire), pyknòs (compact, earth-and-water) — and matched effort to the enérgia (function) and dýnamis (capacity) of the individual athlete.10

Underneath the exercise lists is a training methodology that any modern coach would recognize. Physical training followed a skhêma ("form") — "essentially the same as modern training drills that were highly structured, then applied in free sparring."11 The governing maxim was próton symmeletân ê meletân — "first practice cooperatively with a partner, before practicing individually or in a free manner."11 You drill the form cooperatively, embody it, then test it in free play.

The deepest principle is symmetría ("due proportion"). It was "a fundamental principle and quality both of the training and of the athlete."12 To be eupagês (solid) and kouphos (graceful) at once, the athlete must be symmetros (symmetrical/well-proportioned) — and crucially, "to be symmetrical, one must train symmetrically."12 The balanced body comes from balanced training. Four Greek implements, four Indian wrestling tools: the pole (mallakhamb), the sandbag, the swung club (mil), the holed-stone weight (nāl). Add the skapérda (rope-pulling through a ring on a column) and dielkystinda (tug of war), and the toolkit looks like a modern Indian akhara.15 The case matters because it is material evidence, not just conceptual: the actual training equipment of the Greek palaístra and the Indian akhara appears to be the same kit — climbing pole, swung club, lifted stone, sandbag. Combined with the shared earth-pit (skámma/miṭṭī), the shared self-besprinkling with dust, and the shared "body of one colour"/symmetros ideal, the equipment correspondence is one of the strongest planks in the cross-limb argument. A complete athlete trains all three qualities, not just all muscles.

Then adopt the skhêma method, which is simply the best way humans learn a skill: drill the form cooperatively first, then free-play it. "First practice cooperatively with a partner, before practicing individually or in a free manner" — embody the structured drill until it is automatic, then test it in the chaos of free sparring or competition. Antti Ijäs's modern scholarship on the skhêmata (drill-and-free-play, the instructor's explicit knowledge) is cited accurately.

The convergence: both preserve essentially the same system (the three qualities, the skhêmata, the symmetría ideal); they differ only on its dignity — Galēnós treating it as the crude practice of "dumb animals," Philóstratos as a wisdom "inferior to none of the other skills." The split reveals that the content of Greek sports science was stable and sophisticated regardless of how the intellectuals ranked it, and that we owe its survival to a man who looked down on it.
