Can a Tree Decide Something?

A tree has no brain, no nerves and nothing that could be called a decision. It stands where it was planted, and something either eats it or does not. That is the whole of what most people assume about trees.

This page reports a case in which a tree noticed it was being eaten, changed its chemistry to stop it, and then — apparently — told the trees next to it, which changed theirs too, though nothing was eating them. The case is used here as evidence for a soul in plants. Whatever you make of that conclusion, the events are worth having. So the question is worth asking flatly. Can a tree decide something?

Full Stomachs, Dead of Hunger

It began with kudu, an antelope of Southern Africa, dying of hunger in a local game park — and dying of hunger with their stomachs full of their natural fodder.1

That is the whole puzzle in one sentence, and it is a good one. An animal starving is ordinary. An animal starving with a full belly of exactly the right food is not, and it is the kind of fact nobody can leave alone.

A professor at a local university took it up and set out to determine the reason.1 Nothing about the investigation is mystical. What follows is straightforwardly a piece of field biology, and it is reported that way.

The Bacteria Were Destroyed

The post-mortems gave the mechanism. In the intestines of the dead bucks, the bacteria which normally digest food in ruminants were destroyed.1

Which explains the full stomachs exactly. A ruminant does not digest leaves; the bacteria in it do, and an animal whose gut flora has been killed can eat as much as it likes and get nothing out of any of it. The food was there and the machinery for using it was gone.

Then the cause of that. Extremely high levels of tannins in the food were responsible for destroying the vital bacteria.1 All plants have tannins and always have. So the question became why these levels were so far above normal.

The Thorn Tree's Defence

The professor's idea was that the unnaturally high tannins had something to do with the antelope overgrazing their natural habitat, and he set out to prove it.1 The hypothesis is ordinary and so is the method.

What the trees are described as doing is a graded response rather than a fixed property. Normally the buck grazes the leaves of local thorn trees, and the tree allows the animal to eat its leaves only to a certain degree. When a kudu starts to overgraze, the plant turns on its defences by increasing the tannin levels in its leaves.2

And the purpose of that is stated plainly. It turns the leaves bitter, thus stopping the buck from eating more of that specific tree — at which point the animal would normally move on to another tree.2

So the tannin is not a poison in intent. It is a message with a threshold on it, and the message is enough, go elsewhere. The tree is not trying to kill anything and never was.

The Drought Removed the Exit

What made it lethal was a change in circumstances rather than a change in the chemistry. There was a serious local drought, and the result was too many kudu and far too few trees to feed them.2

In those conditions the message could not be obeyed. With nowhere else to graze, the kudu continued grazing the trees despite the high tannin levels, and were killed by having their intestinal bacteria destroyed.2 They could taste it. They ate on.

Nothing in the tree's behaviour was different. The same response had regulated grazing for as long as there had been kudu and thorn trees. It became a killer at the moment the animal had no second tree to walk to.

The Neighbouring Trees

The part called remarkable happened during the testing, and it was not what anyone was looking for. Measuring equipment was attached to a thorn tree, which was then afflicted by having leaves and branches pulled off it, so the rise in tannins could be measured.2

The tree behaved as expected. As it was attacked it started its usual defence, gradually increasing the tannin levels to a very high degree.2 Nothing surprising in that, and it was the point of the experiment.

Then the finding. On attaching the equipment to adjacent trees of the same species, the tannin levels there were at the same peak level as those of the punished plant.2 Nothing had touched them. Nothing had been anywhere near them.

And the interpretation offered is appropriately tentative. It appears the trees had somehow communicated, maybe via scent.2 The mechanism is guessed at rather than demonstrated, and the guess is a chemical one rather than a mystical one.

The Vital Self That Links All Life

The conclusion drawn is the reason the case is here at all. There is a soul, or living force, operating in plants as well, and that soul is again the Nefesh — the Vital Self which links all life.3

Its remit is then narrowed rather than expanded, which is worth noticing. This is an Instinctual Soul whose existence is solely to keep the normal, instinctual survival functions going.3 Nothing is claimed about plants having preferences or intentions.

And the functions are listed, in a single breath that puts plants and people on the same footing. Procreation — the continuance of the species — and all the involuntary actions of the body, like heart beat and reflexes.3 Whatever is raising the tannins in an acacia is the same thing keeping your heart going while you read this.

Implementation Workflow

You want something to take from a story about antelope. Four moves, and the third is the one that matters.

Start by reading bitterness as a message rather than as an attack. The tannin was a stop signal with a threshold on it, and the tree had been feeding that animal quite happily up to the point where it turned. Most things that turn unpleasant were tolerable for a long time first, and the change is information about quantity rather than about hostility.

Then check for the exit before treating the signal as the problem. What killed the kudu was not the tannin. It was the absence of a second tree, and every part of that mechanism is fine as long as there is somewhere to go.

Then apply the same test to whatever in your own life has turned bitter. If you cannot leave it, the warning it is giving you cannot do its job and will simply keep escalating. The useful question in that position is not how to tolerate the bitterness. It is what a second tree would look like.

And take the Nefesh identification as a practical suggestion, since that is how it is offered. The thing raising the tannins is put in the same category as your heartbeat and your reflexes — so on this account you already have an instinctual self doing graded, self-protective, communicative work, and it does not consult you either.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The core of the case is real biology and it is reported coherently. Ruminants do depend on gut bacteria. Tannins do interfere with digestion, and plants really do produce defensive compounds in response to browsing. None of that requires anything unusual to be true.

The neighbouring-trees result is the load carrying the conclusion, and it is the part given least support. No study is named, no researcher is named beyond a professor at a local university, no date is given, and no publication is cited. Airborne plant signalling is a real field of research where the strength of individual findings varies considerably, and a reader cannot check anything stated here.

Tension left open. The conclusion is that plants have a soul. But the mechanism guessed at in the same paragraph is scent — a volatile chemical released by a damaged plant and received by an intact one. That needs no soul at all. The best available explanation is sitting in the same paragraph as the conclusion it undercuts, and nothing notices.

The Nefesh gets two different jobs in the space of a few paragraphs and they are not the same size. Here its existence is solely to keep normal instinctual survival functions going — heartbeat, reflexes, procreation. That is a maintenance role, and a thorn tree can plausibly have one.

A page earlier, the same Nefesh has phobias, holds convictions, decides that there is no longer a reason to live, and can be befriended and argued with. That is a great deal more than survival maintenance.

The tree case is being used to establish the first and the practical instructions all rest on the second. Nothing bridges them, and the bridge is exactly where the interesting question lives: at what point does a vital force that regulates grazing become something with an opinion about whether life is worth continuing? A tree that raises its tannins is doing something impressive and it is not despairing.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Conversational Scarcity — behavioral-mechanics.

The instinct that makes a sold-out product feel more desirable is traced to the survival maths of the ancestral environment. Missing a meal, or letting a fleeing animal escape, could mean death. So a brain that treats scarcity and lost opportunity as urgent had a straightforward advantage over one that did not. Cialdini documented it as a marketing principle. It is much older than marketing.

That alarm is what killed the kudu. Under drought the scarcity signal ran at full volume, and it overrode a bitterness signal that had regulated the animal's eating its whole life. The buck did not fail to taste the tannin. It kept eating anyway, and that is exactly what the alarm is built to make an animal do.

Which gives the general principle, and it is worth carrying well past antelope. A warning only protects you while you have an exit. Remove the exit and the same warning, unchanged, becomes the thing that kills you. The tannin is a communication, not a poison, and the difference between those two descriptions is entirely a fact about the drought.

And it names how the equivalent gets done to people deliberately. Nobody has to poison anything. You only have to remove the alternative, or make it look removed, and the two-hundred-thousand-year-old alarm does the rest — which is what a countdown timer, a last-few-remaining notice and a closing window are all for. The kudu had no second tree. A person being worked on this way is being told the same thing, and it is usually not true.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The tree's response is graded and reversible, and it had regulated grazing indefinitely without killing anything. So the lethal ingredient was not in the plant, and it was not in the animal either. It was in the ratio between them, which makes the whole disaster a property of a relationship rather than of either party in it.

Generative questions.

  • The proposed mechanism is scent. What work is the word soul doing that a volatile chemical signal does not already do?
  • The Nefesh here does maintenance only. Where does the tradition locate the point at which it acquires convictions?
  • The undamaged neighbours reached the same peak as the attacked tree. Does anything say whether that is efficient for them, or a cost paid for a threat that never arrives?
