The failures cluster on lists that announce a number first.

Every broken count in this volume has the same architecture: a quantity is declared, then items follow. Ten Mauryas. Ten Śuṅgas. Thirty Āndhras. Twenty-four preceptors. Ten things a guṇa comes from. Seven categories per month. Four hundred thousand verses.

And 12(12) — pages of enumeration, two hundred names, no announced total — does not fail.

Then the datum that decides it. Debroy's own note on the Āndhras: *"The names listed actually fall short of thirty. But thirty is the number also cited in other Puranas."*

A quantity that travels between texts while the list it heads does not.

Candidate Idea

These are not errors. They are the wrong reading contract applied by a modern reader.

Ten kings is doing what once upon a time does — it marks the passage as a dynastic list. Four hundred thousand marks a corpus as vast. Twenty-four preceptors marks a teaching as exhaustive. ⚠ A reader who counts has misunderstood the sentence's job, which is why, for two thousand years, in a tradition with a famously exact relationship to enumeration, essentially nobody did.

And the generalisation is the interesting part. A false specific survives indefinitely wherever readers have agreed it is not a claim. The engineering intuition — confident false specifics are a defect to be reduced — assumes a reading contract in which specifics are assertions. Change the contract and the same output stops being wrong.

[SPECULATIVE], and the counter-reading is preserved rather than beaten: verse-counts are catalogue data, and the text never proposes size as a ranking.On that reading the whole finding is an artefact of applying a metric the chapter did not intend — and the Bhāgavata placing itself eighth is the reader's arithmetic, not the text's blunder.

What Would Need to Be True

  • Volumes 1 and 2 would have to carry the same signature at a comparable rate.Unchecked, and this is the decisive test. A pattern in one Skandha is a pattern in one Skandha.
  • Another Purāṇa would have to show announced-number failures at a similar rate, or this is about this text.
  • The selective-flagging sub-finding needs more than two instances.Held at [n=2 OBSERVED], with the deflationary explanation named: both flagged cases are the two where an external king-list exists, so the apparatus may be reconciling with history rather than auditing the text.
  • Disconfirmation: find one place where a Purāṇic commentator treats a mismatched count as an error requiring emendation, in the tradition, before print. ⚑ That would show the count was a claim and the label reading collapses.
