The Discipline That Studies Coercion Keeps Committing It

Source Tensions

• MKUltra (the brain-war offensive, the pathology of classified research) — academic psychologists took CIA money to research mind control; some warned about the dangers even as they participated.
• Cameron (a portrait) — a president of the APA ran depatterning that was, in plain terms, torture as treatment.
• The APA flip-flop (the flip-flop) — the APA dismissed its own coercive-persuasion report as "hysterical ramblings" in 1987, then was found colluding in coercive interrogation by 2015.

The Collision

Three separate episodes, one structure: the discipline that owns the concepts in this entire book — DDD, thought reform, coercive persuasion, the ordinary-person thesis — is a repeat participant in the coercion it names, and repeatedly declines to name it clearly at exactly the moments when clarity would cost the profession.

And the sting is reflexive. The ordinary-person thesis says decent people commit atrocities under situational pressure. The psychologists at Abu Ghraib were decent people under institutional pressure (contracts, patriotism, vague ethics guidelines, peer participation). So the discipline's signature finding predicts its own complicity — psychologists are ordinary people, and situation shapes them too. The field demonstrated its own theory, from the inside, and didn't see it coming.

Candidate Idea

The students of coercion get no exemption from it, and a discipline's inability to apply its own findings reflexively — to see its own members as the ordinary people the theory describes — is the specific blind spot that guarantees the complicity recurs. This indicts the vault's own corpus question: every framework filed under "coercive persuasion" comes from a field with a documented interest in when to sharpen the concept and when to blur it. The concepts stay real and useful; but they must be held knowing their provenance is not a neutral observer.

What Would Need to Be True

• The three episodes must share the same mechanism (self-protective blurring + situational drift), not just co-occur. ✓ — each is complicity-through-vagueness or complicity-through-participation.
• The reflexive claim (the field demonstrated its own thesis) must be more than rhetoric — the Abu Ghraib psychologists' situational pressures must match the thesis's conditions. ✓ per the ordinary-person thesis.
• Recurs from the Brunson ingest's open question: does the vault hold a practitioner-manipulation corpus without a matched defensive one? This collision adds: does the vault hold the coercion literature without holding its authors' complicity in view?
