The episode is one sentence long and it is a test of a specific bodily capacity.
"His advisors were all against his announcement that he wanted to use this technique until he took them to the wall of the Potala Palace and he began to urinate off the wall. Before the urine could hit the ground he withdrew it back into his body. Only after seeing this did they finally cease their objections for he had clearly proved his gong-fu and qualifications."1
Downward flow, already released, reversed and drawn back.
Which is not a display of general holiness. It is a demonstration of control over the direction of a flow that ordinarily only goes one way — and it is performed in public, in front of the people objecting, in the present tense.
The objection it answers was about a specific practice: sexual cultivation, which the Sixth Dalai Lama proposed to use "to help fully open his channels and transform his body at the appropriate time."1
The reason this settles the dispute is that the capacity demonstrated is the capacity the method requires.
Karmamudra and the sexual-cultivation methods depend entirely on one condition: energy raised and not lost — "while not losing any semen."2 The whole risk of those practices, and the whole reason they are forbidden to ordinary practitioners, is that the loss happens and the practice becomes depletion instead of transformation. See Milarepa's Thousand Vaginas.
And the ordinary-practitioner version of the same constraint is the difficult one: retention "without a forceful restraint which would impede the chi flow as well," learned slowly, with "a lot of starting and stopping."2
So the wall demonstration is exactly on target. Not a general miracle offered as evidence of attainment — a display of the one faculty the disputed practice stands or falls on, at a level far beyond what the practice actually needs.
Which is why the advisors stop objecting. They were not persuaded that he was holy. They were shown that the failure mode could not happen to him.
Two conditions sit alongside the demonstration.
"After five previous enlightened incarnations, only then did the Sixth Dalai Lama finally use sexual cultivation… at the appropriate time."1
Accumulated attainment — five prior lives, which is the merit-and-progress condition that gates every advanced practice in this material. See Merit Gates Access to Teachings.
And a specific moment. At the appropriate time — not as a general practice, but at the stage where it does the work of fully opening the channels and transforming the body.
Which matches the wider pattern: these methods are stage-specific rather than lifelong, applied at the point where the channel work needs the heat they generate, and pointless or harmful outside that window.
Three conditions together, then: enough behind you, the right moment, and the demonstrated capacity.
Worth noticing what could not have settled the dispute, because it explains why a physical test was the instrument.
Doctrine wouldn't — the prohibitions were on the advisors' side.
A claim wouldn't — the claim was the thing in dispute.
And results couldn't — the results of sexual cultivation are internal, slow, and would arrive long after the permission had been taken.
Which leaves one move: produce a present, visible capacity that only the internal attainment could produce.
That is the general shape of verification in this material. Attainment is claimed to be checkable because it has physical signs — a body that has actually transformed can do things a body that hasn't cannot. The wall is that principle at its most literal. See Gong Fu Is the Signpost, Not the Road.
The advisors accepted the demonstration as proof of "his gong-fu and qualifications" — two things joined by an and, and they are worth separating.
Gongfu — a bodily capacity. Demonstrated directly. Reverse flow is either happening or it isn't.
Qualification — fitness to use a dangerous method. Which includes judgment, restraint, and the wisdom not to cause the social disorder the prohibitions exist to prevent.
The demonstration establishes the first completely. And it bears on the second only through a specific bridge: the danger of the method is loss, and loss is what he has just proved cannot happen to him.
That bridge is real but narrow. It does not cover the other stated grounds for the prohibition — that dissemination produces disorder, that ordinary people will claim the same licence, that promiscuity gets spiritual cover. Those are social consequences, and no bodily capacity speaks to them. See What Left-Hand Tantra Actually Is.
So the test answers the technical objection and not the institutional one — and the advisors, on this telling, treated the technical answer as sufficient.
Nothing here is practice. The method under dispute is one this material forbids to its readers on four separate authorities, and no technique for reverse flow is described anywhere.
What is portable is the standard for claims of exemption. When someone claims to be the exception to a prohibition on grounds of attainment, the shape of the answer given here is: a present, public demonstration of the specific capacity the exemption depends on — not a lineage, not a title, not a testimonial, and not a report of past experience.
Which is a usable filter. Ask what capacity the claimed exemption actually requires, and whether anything has been shown that bears on it. Anyone invoking the Sixth Dalai Lama's licence without the Sixth Dalai Lama's wall has skipped the part that did the work.
And note the direction of the burden. He was not asked to prove himself; he took the objectors to the wall. The demonstration was offered.
Reverse and retained flow is a recurring marker of transformation in this material rather than a one-off wonder.
The ordinary-householder instruction is the low end of the same skill — ejaculation control, learned gradually, by "mastering various stroking techniques that enable a man to pause and retain his staying power."2 Which is explicitly called yoga rather than cultivation: "for this is yoga, not spiritual cultivation."2
So the wall is the top of a ladder whose bottom rung is ordinary and teachable. Retention at one end, reversal at the other, with the same underlying control running through both.
Which also explains why the demonstration reads as conclusive to people inside the tradition. They know what the low rungs cost, because the standard instruction says how hard they are to learn, and the top of that ladder is not reachable by anyone bluffing.
The timing condition deserves its own attention because it is the part most easily dropped.
These methods generate heat for opening channels. They are not a path in themselves — "movements of the lower torso do not lead to samadhi or enlightenment" — and they belong at the stage where the channel work needs what they generate.3
Before that stage, there is nothing for the heat to do.
After it, the work is done by other means.
Which is why the Sixth Dalai Lama's five incarnations matter mechanically rather than just morally: they are what put him at the stage where the technique had a job. A practitioner without that behind them is not merely unqualified — they are applying a stage-specific method outside its stage, which is the general shape of how this whole path goes wrong. See The Premature Valve.
Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no Tibetan source, date, or named advisor. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. [LOW CONFIDENCE] on the episode as history; recorded here as what the source states.
Tension — demonstrable and undemonstrable conditions. Reverse flow can be shown; five prior enlightened incarnations cannot. The two are presented as jointly required, and only one was tested.
Tension — technical and social objection. The demonstration answers the risk of energy loss and leaves the disorder-and-dissemination argument untouched, though that is the ground the prohibitions are elsewhere given.
Open question — was the objection about the method or the office? A monastic head announcing an exemption from monastic conduct would draw objections for institutional reasons alone, and nothing distinguishes that from a dispute about gongfu.
Open question — is reverse flow trained or emergent? The low rungs are taught explicitly; nothing says whether the top is a further training or a capacity that simply appears once the body has transformed.
Two things the episode is doing, and they cut against each other.
It is a fence. It sits mid-prohibition — Tsong Khapa forbids, Hindu masters forbid, and immediately after it Shakyamuni forbids "even to his greatest students." The bar it sets is the highest named anywhere: five enlightened lives, plus a public proof.
And it is a procedure. It establishes that the gate can be passed, and it shows the passing move — demonstrate the capacity, in front of the doubters, now.
A reader taking the first is warned off permanently. A reader taking the second has been handed the criterion and can start asking whether they meet it. Both are on the page, and the second is what happens whenever a prohibition is argued for by naming its one legitimate exception.
Costly Signaling — behavioral mechanics.
A claim about an unobservable property becomes credible in proportion to how hard the signal is to produce without actually having the property. Waste, expense and difficulty work as evidence because faking them costs as much as being genuine. And the corollary: a signal certifies whatever it is mechanically correlated with, not whatever an audience reads into it.
Both halves apply, and together they explain why this particular demonstration is unusually good evidence.
It is unfakeable. There is no cheap version, no approximation, nothing that looks similar from a distance. By the standard the signalling literature sets, it is close to ideal — the cost of producing it without the capacity is infinite rather than merely high.
And, unusually, it is on-target. Most impressive demonstrations fail the second test: they index a real capacity that has nothing to do with the question being asked, and the audience bridges the gap themselves. This one doesn't. The disputed practice fails through loss of downward flow; the demonstration is control of downward flow. The correlation is not inferred, it is the same faculty.
Which is worth extracting as a general test, because most claimed credentials fail it. Ask what specific capacity the claim requires, then ask whether the demonstration indexes that capacity or merely a nearby impressive one. A lineage, a title, a decade of retreat and a reputation are all signals; none of them is the faculty in question.
The residue is where the signalling frame bites: the more impressive a demonstration, the less an audience audits the correlation. Here the audit happens to pass. That is fortunate rather than typical, and the wall works because of what it shows, not because of how astonishing it is.
What the source leaves undetermined is whether the capacity was a precondition or a product.
The episode is arranged as: attainment accumulated, capacity demonstrated, permission granted, practice undertaken.
But the capacity is exactly what the practice is supposed to develop. Retention is the skill sexual cultivation trains — the low rungs are taught as a gradual, difficult acquisition — and here it is being displayed at maximum before the practice begins.
Which makes the sequence odd. If he could already reverse flow at will, what did the practice have left to give him? The stated purpose was to "fully open his channels and transform his body," so the answer must be that the retention faculty and the channel transformation are separable — one is the entry requirement, the other is the yield.
Nothing says that, and nothing says how someone acquires the entry requirement without the practice that trains it. Which leaves the gate closed by a capacity that only the thing behind the gate develops — and no account anywhere of how the first person through it managed.
