Part of the appeal of relocating somewhere with abundant, inexpensive domestic help is precisely the Viceroy Test running in the other direction — not technology replacing the servant, but genuine, affordable human service becoming accessible again, the way it once was reserved for the very wealthy in a high-labor-cost economy.4 Nobody puts this explicitly on the relocation brochure. You're writing copy for a home-robotics startup's vacuum-and-mop device, and the current draft leads with technical specs — suction power, battery life, mapping accuracy. Try the Viceroy reframe before finalizing anything. Ask what specific historical role this device is actually replacing — a housemaid who swept and mopped floors daily. Write toward that comparison directly, not as a gimmick but because it's the honest value proposition: this machine gives an ordinary household access to a standard of floor-cleanliness that used to require live-in staff, at a fraction of the historical cost.
Later, a client in hospitality asks why their "smart room" technology package — lighting, temperature, entertainment all voice-controlled — isn't generating the excitement they expected, despite genuinely impressive engineering. Apply the same test. Voice-controlled lighting doesn't replace a role a Viceroy's household actually had — nobody employed a dedicated "adjusts the lamp" servant. The technology is real, but it isn't answering the Viceroy Test the way a robot vacuum or a washing machine does, and that's likely why it isn't landing with the same visceral appeal: it's convenience without the deeper resonance of closing a historical class gap.
