For 33 years — since he first started studying Jyotish in the early 1980s — Andrew Foss had wondered about the origin of the Vimshottari Dasha, the 120-year planetary-cycle system that drives Vedic predictive astrology. Why are the nine planetary lords sequenced in the order they are? Why those specific durations (Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rāhu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20 — summing to 120)? Foss could not find a derivation in any ancient or modern text. "Nowhere in the literature, ancient or modern, can even a satisfactory hint be found."
On July 7, 2015, he saw on the web a partial derivation of the sequence-of-lords (relying on knowing the cycle-lengths). The author appealed for someone to find the derivation of the cycle-lengths. Foss pulled out a fresh sheet of paper. The principles unfolded themselves. "It did not take long to realize that I had an answer and it just required some polishing." In the process, two finds emerged: the derivation of the Vimshottari-cycle lengths, and a profound advance in the understanding of Tara Bala (the strength-of-the-stars system used for interpreting Dashā). Foss notes both findings are "published in this book" — but the Yoga of the Planets eBook ends each volume's Secrets of Vimshottari Dasha chapter with a single sentence: "As a bonus I have decided to publish some unique secrets about Vedic Astrology in the printed version of this book... Please visit YogaOfThePlanets.com for more information." The eBook documents the discovery-event but reserves the full derivation for print.

Mars 28 — Nakṣatra-cakra-saṁcārin (rotating through the circle of Nakshatras). Foss's commentary: "Mars owns the central Nakshatra in the sequence of nine that repeats three times to make up the zodiac. It plays a pivotal role in joining the two halves of the sequence of planetary lords. This sequence of nine is the root of the Vedic system of Dashās or planetary cycles that make it such an accurate system of astrology. This is discussed further in the chapter on The Secrets of Vimshottari Dashā in the printed version of this book."
Mars 75 — Meṣa-vāha (riding a ram). The commentary anchors Mars's rulership in Aries as the MūlaTrikoṇa sign — "more focused on his duty as a protector in Aries than in Scorpio". Aries is the first sign of the zodiac; Mars's first nakshatra (Aśvinī) opens the zodiac; the central-anchor role then unfolds across the three Mars nakshatras spanning the three nine-nakshatra cycles.
Mars 87 — Go-madhya-cara (moving in the midst of the Grahas). Foss's commentary: "Leaving out the Earth, Mars is in the middle of the sequence of visible planets which is why it is of particular interest to us... Mars' position as the central lord of the sequence of Nakshatras is of great importance in Vedic Astrology. This is discussed in the Chapter about the Secrets of the Vimshottari Dashā in the printed version of this book."
Sūrya 178 — The Konark name decoded. "The name of the Sun temple is from Kona + Arka. Arka is a name of the Sun and Kona means trine. In Jyotisha, this indicates the Dharma Trikona, the sustainer of life, which I have written about in many places in this book and is so important in the interpretation of the Vimshottari Dashā."

The three Mars nakshatras are Mrigaśiras, Citrā, Dhaniṣṭhā. Mars rules these three. Each is central in one of the three nine-nakshatra cycles that compose the 27-nakshatra zodiac:
The three Mars-nakshatras anchor the central position in each nine-nakshatra cycle. Mars is structurally the joining mechanism of the two halves of the sequence — the planet that sits at the pivot of each cycle.
The 120-year cycle length has the property that 120 = 9 × 13.33... (or 27 × 4.44...). Foss says "In the derivation of the Vimshottari Dashā cycles or periods, the great significance of 20 years is revealed." (Sūrya 176, immediately after the Achyutānanda-Sanjay-Rath transmission-narrative.) The 20-year significance plus the central-Mars-anchor + the Dharma-Trikona (Kona-Arka / Konark Sun-temple name) plus the relationship between Vimshottari-lord-sequence and Tara-Bala together form the architecture of the discovery.
The full derivation — including specifically how the cycle lengths 6/10/7/18/16/19/17/7/20 (Sun/Moon/Mars/Rāhu/Jupiter/Saturn/Mercury/Ketu/Venus) follow from these principles — remains reserved.
The Vimshottari Dasha is the most-used Vedic-astrology timing-prediction system. Until Foss's 2015 discovery, the system was operationally used without a known derivation. Practitioners learned the cycle-lengths-and-sequence by memorisation, treating them as given by lineage-transmission. A derivation would mean: the system is not arbitrary; the cycle-lengths are not the product of historical convention but of a generative principle that can be re-derived from the underlying cosmology. If correct, this is one of the most significant Vedic-astrology methodological discoveries of the past century — comparable to discovering the periodic-table derivation rather than memorising element-properties.
The reservation-of-the-derivation for the print edition is itself a significant methodological choice. Foss's stated reason is publishing logistics (eBook length constraints). The functional effect is that the derivation requires purchase-of-the-print-edition to access — a lineage-transmission gate at a low price-point. This is partial-knowledge-by-design: the eBook documents the discovery-existence, naming what is missing; the print edition supplies the missing piece. Evidence: Foss documents the discovery-event with date specificity (July 7, 2015), with the cognitive-process narrative (responding to a web-author's appeal), and with explicit citation of the trigger (a partial-derivation of the sequence-of-lords that left the cycle-lengths open). The eBook content surrounding the discovery is consistent with a partial-but-real architectural finding.

Tensions: Foss's reservation of the full derivation for the print edition creates an epistemological asymmetry — the discovery's truth-or-falsity cannot be assessed from the eBook alone. Open Questions: Has the print-edition derivation been verified or refuted by other Vedic-astrology practitioners? Does the derivation generalise — i.e., can it predict the cycle-lengths and sequences for related-but-different Dasha systems (Ashtottari, Kāla-Chakra, etc.)? Is the Mars-central-position-as-joining-mechanism finding novel, or has it been documented in earlier traditions Foss did not encounter?
The mechanism that makes a derivation-of-Vimshottari reach outside Vedic astrology is the discovery that a long-used operational system has a previously-unrecognised generative principle — and the implications for how to relate to other long-used operational systems.
History of science: The structural-parallel is the discovery of the periodic-table derivation by Mendeleev — chemists had been using element-properties for decades; Mendeleev showed the properties were not arbitrary but followed from atomic-number-and-electron-shell architecture. The Vimshottari-derivation has the same shape: a system used operationally for centuries by lineage-transmission, suddenly revealed to follow from underlying generative principles. The insight: operational-use without derivation-knowledge is the normal state of practitioner-traditions, and derivation-discoveries reorganise the entire field's relationship to the practice. This implies similar derivation-discoveries may be latent in other long-used systems: the Western tropical zodiac, the Chinese five-element cycle, the Mayan long-count calendar. Foss's methodological pattern (he is an Oxford Physicist who recognised the cycle-lengths could not be arbitrary and worked out the principle) may be transferable.
Behavioral mechanics / hidden-architecture-of-influence: the Behavior OPS Manual extraction documented the operational use of influence-and-tactics for decades; the derivation-of-why-they-work in cognitive-psychological terms came later. Structural parallel: operational mastery often precedes scientific-derivation by generations. The insight: practitioner-traditions are not pre-scientific; they are pre-derivational — they have done the operational work; the derivation-work catches up later. This reframes the relationship between Vedic-astrology-as-tradition and Western-science-as-derivation: not hostile, but staged.
Creative practice / craft-knowledge: the non-fiction writing-craft tradition is full of operational knowledge that lacks explicit derivation — Bilton's Tetris-database research-method, Macfarlane's preposition-shift, Forsyth's named rhetorical figures. Foss's Vimshottari-discovery suggests a category of work that could be done: deriving the underlying principles of operational craft-traditions that have been used effectively without explicit derivation. The Vedic-astrology lineage has just had its Mendeleev-moment for Vimshottari; the writing-craft tradition may be ready for analogous moments.
The Sharpest Implication: The Vimshottari system has been used operationally for centuries without anyone able to derive why the cycle-lengths are what they are. Foss derived it in one sitting in 2015 after thirty-three years of holding the question. Long-held questions sometimes get answered all-at-once; the practitioner's responsibility is to hold the question precisely, not to force it. The reader who accepts this must reconsider any long-held question they have been treating as unanswerable: was it actually unanswerable, or was it waiting to be approached from the angle Foss found by reading the right web-page in July 2015?
