How long will you live? Classical jyotish refuses to answer this question precisely — the texts repeatedly warn against telling natives their death-time — but it offers structural methods for estimating the range. Short life (0–36 years). Middle life (36–72 years). Long life (72–108 years). Three brackets. Two independent methods for placing the native into one of them. The methods are not for casual use; they're for medical-prognostic situations, for understanding the unfolding of dasha periods, for calibrating which long-term predictions make sense to deliver.1
Rao chapter 14 covers two of the classical longevity methods: the Method of Three Pairs (Parashari) and the Eighth-Lord Method (Parashari and Jaimini). Both produce category-level estimates (short/middle/long), not specific year-counts. Both rely on the movable/fixed/dual rashi classification of specific reference points.
The Method of Three Pairs (line 4504) reads three pairs of chart-reference-points and assigns each pair a longevity category. The three pairs:

The paramaayush table cross-references the two-pair-agreement with the third-pair to produce specific maximum-life-span numbers — 32, 36, 40, 64, 72, 80, 96, 108, 120 years.4
The two methods are independent by design. Practitioners run both and look for agreement. When the three-pairs reading and the eighth-lord reading agree, the longevity category is confirmed. When they disagree, the practitioner consults additional methods (ashtakavarga formulas, Shoola Dasa, the Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshvara trio doctrine) before settling on an estimate.
The classical reason for two methods running in parallel: longevity prediction is epistemically dangerous. A wrong prediction either creates needless fear or generates false comfort. Multiple-method agreement provides epistemic discipline — if both classical methods converge, the prediction is more reliable than either alone.
The longevity methods feed directly into the Maraka apparatus (Rao chapter 14.2). Marakas — the 2nd and 7th lords specifically — produce death-timing in their dashas. The longevity method establishes the category (which dasha-range the death is expected in); the maraka apparatus refines the timing within that range. A native in the short-life category will see maraka activity in the first three decades; a native in the long-life category will see it in the seventh decade or later.
The methods also discipline dasha interpretation. A practitioner predicting that a native will achieve a major career milestone at age 75 should confirm the native is in the long-life category. If the three-pairs and eighth-lord readings both indicate short life, the 75-year-old career milestone prediction is structurally improbable. The longevity reading establishes the timeframe within which other predictions can land.
The Rudra/Trishoola/Maheshvara doctrine (chapter 14.3) adds a third layer — naming the specific planets that will cause death and the houses that mark the death-trishoola. The integration is layered: three-pairs and eighth-lord establish the category; Rudra/Maheshvara name the agents; maraka apparatus refines the dasha-timing. The four-layer reading is the classical longevity diagnostic.
A native walks in for general chart reading. The practitioner runs the three-pairs method:
Pair 1: Lagna lord Venus is in Capricorn (movable). 8th lord Mercury is in Cancer (movable). Movable + Movable = Long life.
Pair 2: Moon is in Taurus (fixed). Saturn is in Gemini (dual). Fixed + Dual = Long life.
Pair 3: Lagna in Taurus (fixed). HL in Aries (movable). Movable + Fixed = Middle life.
Two pairs indicate long life; one pair indicates middle life. The two-pair agreement dominates. Long life is the combined classification. Paramaayush from Table 34 (two-long, third-middle) = 108 years.
The eighth-lord method runs as a check. Lagna is Taurus; 7th house is Scorpio. The stronger of the two needs evaluation — assume Taurus is stronger. 8th lord from Taurus is Mercury. Mercury sits in Cancer, which is the 3rd house from Taurus — an apoklima. Eighth-lord method indicates short life.
The two methods disagree. The three-pairs says long; the eighth-lord says short. The practitioner doesn't deliver a longevity prediction. They consult additional methods (the Rudra/Maheshvara doctrine, ashtakavarga, Shoola Dasa) before settling on an estimate. The disagreement triggers epistemic caution — exactly as the classical apparatus intends. The reading of longevity is held until further confirmation.
This is the diagnostic discipline. The methods aren't supposed to deliver answers cheaply. Disagreement is a feature; it forces the practitioner to slow down at the most consequential prediction.
It is 8am. You're asked about a native's general life-arc. You don't deliver a longevity prediction unprompted, but you need a category-level sense to calibrate the rest of the reading.
You run the three-pairs method first. You identify lagna lord, find the 8th house through Table 32 and its lord, note both rashis. Fixed/movable/dual classification → Table 33 reading. Pair 1 done. You repeat for Moon-Saturn (pair 2) and Lagna-HL (pair 3). Three readings, three categories.
You apply the integration rule. Same? Two-of-three? All three different? You settle on the dominant category. Time elapsed: six minutes.
You run the eighth-lord method as a check. Stronger of lagna and 7th. 8th lord from reference. Quadrant/panaphara/apoklima. Three minutes.
If the methods agree: the longevity category is established. You proceed with the rest of the reading calibrated to that timeframe. Predictions about major life-events at very late ages are screened against the category.
If the methods disagree: you hold the longevity reading. You note both results in your notes. You don't deliver a category-level statement to the native. The dasha-period analysis proceeds without strong longevity-based calibration. You return to the longevity question only if Rudra/Maheshvara or other independent methods provide convergent additional evidence.
The apparatus fails most severely when the practitioner delivers a specific prediction from these methods. The three-pairs and eighth-lord methods produce category estimates, not death-date predictions. A practitioner who tells a native "you will live 72 years" from these methods has confused category-estimation with specific timing. The classical texts repeatedly warn against this; Rao at line 4444 carries the warning forward — "there are formulas for determining longevity... But they do not always work."
A second failure is single-method confidence. A practitioner who runs only the three-pairs method and treats the result as established produces an under-checked reading. Both methods are designed to be run together; agreement establishes the category, disagreement signals epistemic caution.
A third failure is over-weighting the long-life result. "Long life means 72–108 years" — a substantial range. A native predicted long-life is not guaranteed to reach 108; they may reach 72 and die. The category establishes the expected range, not the upper bound. Similarly, "short life means 0–36 years" — a native predicted short-life is not guaranteed to die at 36; they may die at 12 or 30. The category is a probability-distribution, not a point-estimate.
A fourth failure is delivering the longevity reading to the native at all. Classical jyotish is consistent: longevity predictions are for the practitioner's calibration, not for client delivery. The reading shapes how the practitioner predicts other matters — career milestones, marriage timing, late-life events — but the native should typically not be told the category-level estimate. A practitioner who casually delivers "your chart indicates short life" to a healthy 25-year-old has produced needless fear and likely incorrect prediction (since the methods agree often but not always).
The Method of Three Pairs and the Eighth-Lord Method are set out in Rao chapter 14.4–14.5, lines 4504–4555.5 The classical sources are Parashara (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) for the three-pairs method and Jaimini (Jaimini Sutras) for the eighth-lord method. The methods appear with stable definitions across the classical commentary tradition.
The standing tension: the methods produce category-level estimates that are useful for practitioner-calibration but easily misused as specific predictions. Rao's warning at line 4444 is the lineage's response — these formulas "do not always work" and should be approached with caution. Conservative practitioners run multiple methods and only commit to category-level estimates when all methods agree. A second tension: the methods read very differently from the ashtakavarga-based longevity formulas (Pinda Ayur Dasa, Amsa Ayur Dasa) which Rao explicitly says "do not always work" and excludes from the book. The convergence between the three-pairs/eighth-lord category and the ashtakavarga formulas is not automatic; classical practitioners check multiple systems and treat disagreement as a signal to delay prediction.

Rao, Kurczak/Fish, Pai, Larsen, and the broader classical jyotish tradition all transmit the three-pairs and eighth-lord methods with essentially identical definitions. The convergence is complete on the basic apparatus. Where the lineages diverge is in operational frequency — Rao and the Sanjay-Rath lineage run longevity-method checks routinely as calibration; some other lineages reserve them for medical-prognostic situations or refuse to run them at all on ethical grounds.
The Maraka/Rudra/Maheshvara doctrine sits adjacent to the longevity methods. If you accept the longevity-method architecture, the discipline of holding the prediction until multiple methods converge becomes the operational test for any high-stakes diagnostic. The methods aren't valuable because they're individually accurate; they're valuable because their agreement is the epistemic gate. Generalize the rule: any prediction that materially affects a person's life-decisions should require multi-method convergence before delivery. A single-method confidence — the data says X, therefore X is true — produces over-deliverable predictions in jyotish, in medicine, in AI, in any field. The classical apparatus has been encoding for millennia what modern epistemology is still working to operationalize: high-stakes prediction requires triangulation, and disagreement is data, not noise to be averaged away.
