The Vedic apparatus does not treat time as homogeneous. Each time-scale — from instant to year — has a different ruling-graha. The graha that rules the Horā (hour) is different from the graha that rules the day, which is different from the graha that rules the fortnight, etc. Parāśara names seven such time-scales and their ruling-grahas. Knowing which graha rules which time-scale lets the practitioner read the chart for specific-time-scale-significations — what the chart says about the native's instant-by-instant focus, daily-strength, fortnightly-relationships, monthly-wealth, etc.

Larsen at line 2777 explains the operational-method: "Maharṣi explains that the year, month, day and Horā are stronger than each other in ascending order. The paramparā teaches that the lords of each of these should be delineated in the chart."

Month-lord (naturally Jupiter-governed) — reveals what blessings and fortunes the native has come to experience. Jupiter-as-natural-month-lord is the blessing-bringer; the chart-specific month-lord reveals what kind of blessing this life carries.
Day-lord (naturally Mars-governed) — reveals the native's strength, power, skills, and vitality. Mars-as-natural-day-lord is the vitality-architect; the chart-specific day-lord reveals what kind of vitality this life carries.
Horā-lord (naturally Moon-governed) — reveals the native's primary focus in life — what the mind constantly contemplates. Moon-as-natural-Horā-lord is the attention-architect; the chart-specific Horā-lord reveals what kind of mind-focus this life carries.
The deeper-architecture: each time-scale has natural-lord (Saturn for Varṣa, Jupiter for Māsa, Mars for Vāra, Moon for Kṣaṇa) but chart-specific-lord (the actual planet lording the day at the relevant time). The interaction of natural-and-chart-specific lord produces the operational-reading.
The four most-operationally-used time-scales (year/month/day/Horā) are stronger than each other in ascending order. Horā is strongest; Day next; Month next; Year least-strong of the four.
This is counter-intuitive — one might expect longer-time-scale = greater-influence. The architecture says the opposite: the most-immediate time-scale (Horā) has the most-immediate-operational-influence on the native, while the year-lord operates more as a background-modulation of the entire-year's-experience.
Operationally: the Horā-lord's chart-position determines moment-by-moment attention and mind-focus. The Day-lord (Mars naturally; chart-specific Vāra-lord) determines daily-strength-and-vitality. The Month-lord (Jupiter naturally; chart-specific) determines monthly-blessing-quality. The Year-lord (Saturn naturally; chart-specific) determines yearly-sin-and-punishment-pattern.
You have a chart. You want to know what kind of life-pattern the native carries across multiple time-scales.
Step 1. Identify the Vāra of birth — this is the Day-Lord.
Step 2. Identify the day Sun entered Aries the year of birth — the Vāra of that day is the Year-Lord. (Software automates this.)
Step 3. Identify the day Sun entered the sign-Sun-occupies-at-birth the month of birth — the Vāra of that day is the Month-Lord.
Step 4. Identify the Horā at the moment of birth — the planet ruling that Horā is the Horā-Lord.
Step 5. For each of the 4 lords, check the planet's chart-position. Note:

The reading takes 15-25 minutes. The information it produces specifies time-scale-specific-quality-of-life that other chart-methods do not surface.
Larsen demonstrates with Rajiv Gandhi's chart. The 4-lord table (line 2814-2818):
Year-Lord-Jupiter is in Mahārāja-Yoga with Sun the Lagna-lord. Rajiv Gandhi never wanted to come into power or become prime minister of India. Jupiter is 8th lord (inheritance). The reading: power came as punishment through loss of mother and later as source of own demise. Jupiter-as-8th-lord-of-inheritance-in-Mahārāja-Yoga = unwanted-power-inherited-through-loss.
Month-Lord-Mercury is in Dhana-Yoga with 5th lord Jupiter and Mercury itself = 11th lord. The reading: enormous wealth as a blessing. Mercury as Ātmakāraka + 2nd lord supports very strong royal-family. The month-lord-Mercury-in-Dhana-Yoga predicted Rajiv Gandhi's substantial-wealth — actualized.
Day-Lord-Sun is well-placed in Lagna. The reading: good solid health and character. Sun-in-Lagna actualized the day-lord-vitality-pattern.
Horā-Lord-Sun (same as Day-Lord). Reading: enormous focus on name/fame and public-perception. Mr. Gandhi was very particular about behavior in public, always respectful and righteous toward others. Horā-Lord-Sun-Lagna actualized the mind-focus pattern.
The 4-lord-architecture correctly predicts Rajiv Gandhi's life-pattern across all 4 time-scales. The Lagna-only read would have shown the strong-Sun-in-Lagna and predicted public-presence; the Year-Lord-Jupiter-8th-lord adds the unwanted-power-inheritance-through-loss layer that actualized as the central-tragic-arc of his life.
A practitioner not reading the time-scale-lords shows specific failures:
They cannot specify what kind of karmic-burden the native carries through the year. Generic-Saturn-reading covers karma-in-general; year-lord-specific reading specifies this-year's-karmic-pattern.
They cannot specify what blessing-pattern the native carries through the month. Generic-Jupiter-reading covers blessing-in-general; month-lord specifies this-month's-blessing-pattern.
They cannot diagnose mismatch between the kind of strength the native has (day-lord) and what they attempt to do. A native trying to do work-misaligned-with-their-day-lord-strength experiences chronic-mismatch-fatigue.
They cannot read mind-focus with precision. The Horā-lord specifies what the native's mind constantly contemplates. Without the apparatus, mind-focus-readings are guesses.

The 7-time-scale-significator-table is treated as Parāśara-canonical. The application-method via Kalyan-Verma (line 2777) is a specific-lineage-transmission. Other practitioners may use different methods for identifying period-lords. The vault preserves the Larsen-Rath-lineage method.
The Horā-stronger-than-Day-stronger-than-Month-stronger-than-Year principle is asserted but the operational-implication-of-the-strength-gradient is not fully specified. When predictions from different time-scale-lords conflict (e.g., Horā-lord suggests good-outcome but Year-lord suggests sin-and-punishment), the strength-gradient resolves the conflict in favor of the shorter-scale. But the conflict-resolution-method is implicit rather than explicit.
The 7-time-scale-significator-architecture is widely accepted in Rath-lineage transmission. Foss does not foreground time-scale-significators. Kurczak/Fish reference time-scale-Dashās without elaborating the significator-architecture. Pai per-Nakṣatra-work is at a different scale. DiCara is deity-mythology-focused.
The convergence: classical Vedic-astrology accepts the 7-time-scale-significator-table. The split: Larsen's specific application-method via Kalyan-Verma's interpretation is Rath-lineage-specific.
Rao puts the 7-time-scale-significator-architecture in dialogue with his Three-Dasa Vantage Architecture — the SIGNAL contribution that maharṣis taught hundreds of dasa systems because they are different epistemic vantage points, not redundancies.2 Each dasa-system specializes in showing one aspect of the same kaleidoscopic life: Nārāyaṇa Daśā shows what happens in life (the circumstance Nārāyaṇa lays out), Vimśottarī Daśā shows how the mind views what happens (the desire/aversion the mind brings to the circumstance), Kālacakra Daśā shows how one relates to what happens and how connected one feels (the soul's relationship to the unfolding). The 7-time-scale-significator architecture operates inside each of these three dasa-vantages. The Year-Saturn-lord operating at the Nārāyaṇa-vantage gives the circumstantial sin-pattern of the year; at the Vimśottarī-vantage it gives the mental sin-pattern (how the mind narrates the karmic-burden); at the Kālacakra-vantage it gives the spiritual sin-pattern (how the soul experiences the burden as connected-or-disconnected). The multi-scale-rhythm-architecture is the structural-reality of biological-time-keeping. The structural parallel to Parāśara's 7-time-scale-significator is direct: both apparatuses recognize that time operates at multiple-simultaneous-scales and each scale has its own governing-architecture. The cross-domain insight: contemporary psychology has empirically-validated that different emotional-and-cognitive variables operate at different time-scales with specific governing-mechanisms. The Sharpest Implication
If Parāśara's 7-time-scale-significator-architecture is operationally accurate, then standard-chart-reading that uses only the natal-chart-position-of-grahas misses the time-scale-specific-quality-of-life that the apparatus generates. A 15-minute calculation of the 4-most-used-lords (Year/Month/Day/Horā) produces information about kind-of-karmic-burden / blessing-pattern / vitality-quality / mind-focus that is not available from other apparatus. Most contemporary Vedic-astrology training does not foreground the 7-time-scale apparatus; the architecture is operationally-undersused.
