Robert McKee — Hollywood's script doctor, author of Storynomics, the most-cited living storytelling-craft authority — compresses the central principle of effective communication into seven words: touch the heart and the mind will open.1
Jasper Claus's corporate-filmmaking practice is built around the maxim. Claus's framing of the practical problem: most corporate communication tries to open the mind first and assumes the heart will follow. The sequence is backwards. The mind does not open until the heart has been touched. When you reverse the sequence — when you try to deliver the message before producing the emotional state that makes the message receivable — the message bounces. The audience's mind stays closed. The communication fails.2
The maxim is operational. It is not a metaphor about being more emotional in communication. It is a precise sequencing rule: emotional engagement precedes cognitive reception, and reversing the sequence produces a different (and worse) outcome than following the sequence.
The maxim has three components.
1. Emotional engagement is sequentially prior to cognitive reception. When you want a message to land — to be understood, remembered, and acted on — the emotional state of the audience must be addressed first. The audience-member who is in a flat, neutral, or skeptical emotional state will receive your cognitive content (facts, arguments, data) but will not internalize it. The same content delivered after the audience-member has been emotionally engaged is internalized at substantially higher rates.
2. The mechanism is the affect heuristic. Daniel Kahneman and colleagues documented in cognitive-psychology research that humans subconsciously attribute more relevance and importance to material that has moved them emotionally. The affect heuristic is a real cognitive bias that operates beneath conscious awareness. McKee's maxim is the practitioner-grade compression of the affect-heuristic finding — the storyteller exploits the heuristic by engineering emotional engagement before delivering the cognitive content the audience is supposed to internalize.
3. The maxim is bidirectional in its failure mode. Reversing the sequence (cognitive content first, emotional engagement second-or-never) is one failure mode. Skipping the cognitive content entirely (emotional engagement only, no substantive material to deliver) is the other failure mode. Both fail. The maxim requires both elements present in the correct sequence — emotional first, cognitive following.
The cognitive mechanism: human attention defaults to evaluative-mode when receiving communication from sources the audience does not yet trust. The evaluative-mode posture is skeptical, distance-keeping, and resistant to having beliefs changed by the incoming material. Most corporate communication operates in this default reception environment — the audience is mildly skeptical, mildly distrustful, and not pre-disposed to internalize the message.
Emotional engagement changes the reception-environment. Audiences who have been moved emotionally shift from evaluative-mode to receptive-mode. The receptive-mode posture is open, trust-building, and willing to consider the incoming material on its own terms. The cognitive content delivered to a receptive-mode audience-member is internalized at substantially higher rates than the same content delivered to an evaluative-mode audience-member.
The maxim works because it operates upstream of the audience's evaluation circuitry. By the time the cognitive content arrives, the evaluation circuitry has been bypassed (or substantially down-regulated) through the heart-touching that preceded it. The message reaches the part of the audience-member's mind that internalizes; without the heart-touching, the message reaches only the part that evaluates and largely rejects.
A second mechanism: emotional engagement produces memory-encoding strength. Content delivered to an emotionally-engaged audience-member is encoded into memory with substantially higher strength than content delivered to a neutral audience-member. The same message therefore persists longer and re-activates more reliably in the emotionally-engaged audience-member's life. The marker-deposit advantage (see stories create markers in audience lives) is downstream of the affect-heuristic operating during the encoding event.
A third mechanism: emotional engagement produces behavioral conviction. Audiences who have been moved emotionally not only believe the message at higher rates — they also act on the message at higher rates. The behavioral-conviction differential is what makes the maxim commercially valuable. Companies whose communication touches hearts get more action (purchases, recommendations, advocacy) per communication-impression than companies whose communication only delivers cognitive content.
The maxim is the strategic principle that kama muta operationalizes at the specific-affect level. McKee tells you touch the heart; kama muta specifies which heart-touching mechanism produces which affective state. The two together give both the strategic principle and the operational specificity.
It pairs with theme-meaning-message content match: the content-match principle says let the story carry the message via derivation; the maxim says the story produces the heart-touching that makes derivation possible. Without heart-touching, the story does not produce the receptive-state that permits message-derivation. The two principles operate as upstream-and-downstream of each other.
It connects to insight as bridge between message and story: Claus's insight construct is the specific bridge-mechanism that connects the heart-touched-state to the message-internalization. The maxim says touch the heart so the mind will open; Claus's insight-construct specifies what the mind opens onto (the universal truth the story embodies, which the message then sits on top of).
It contrasts with conventional information-delivery models of corporate communication, which assume the audience will process the information at the cognitive level without emotional preparation. The contrast is empirical — heart-touching-communication outperforms information-only communication at substantial margins across all measurable downstream outcomes.
Consider a hypothetical corporate-communication scenario. A healthcare company needs to communicate that its new heart-monitoring device saves lives.
Version A (information-first): A slide deck presentation. The presenter walks through statistics — clinical-trial results, mortality reduction percentages, FDA approval timeline, market penetration projections. The audience receives the information. They register the device as competent. They do not internalize the message at the level that produces action.
Version B (heart-first): A short film about a specific patient — a 47-year-old father of two with a previously-undetected heart condition. The film shows him at home with his family, then shows the moment the device detected an arrhythmia, then shows him in the hospital receiving treatment, then shows him back home with his family, now alive. The film ends with one sentence about the device. The audience receives the film. They are moved. They internalize the message at the level that produces action.
Same product. Same essential message (the device saves lives). Different sequence. Version A leads with information; the audience's evaluation circuitry processes the information and partially rejects it. Version B leads with heart-touching; the audience's receptive circuitry processes the message and largely accepts it.
The empirical asymmetry between the two versions is not small. Healthcare-marketing research consistently documents that heart-first communication produces 3-10x the behavioral response of information-first communication for the same content. The asymmetry is the McKee maxim operating at scale.
You have a communication-project. A presentation, a film, a pitch, a written piece. You have substantive content to deliver. You want to sequence the communication per the McKee maxim.
It is Wednesday morning, 8:14am. You are at the kitchen table with the project brief. You ask: what is the message I need this communication to deliver? You write the message in one sentence. Our product saves lives by detecting heart conditions early.
You ask: what heart-touching content could precede the message? You think about specific human-scale stories that embody the message. You think about the 47-year-old father whose life was saved. You think about the nurse who first saw the detection alert. You think about the family who got their father back. You select the version with the strongest emotional resonance — the father version, because parent-child stakes are universally high.
You construct the heart-touching content. You render the father as specific (his name, his daughters' names, the specific moment the alert came in). You construct the emotional arc (vulnerability, detection, treatment, return). You let the story breathe — give it most of the runtime; do not compress it for time-budget reasons.
You append the message at the end. Our device detected what saved his life. The message takes ten seconds. The story takes three minutes. The 90/10 story-to-message ratio is honored.
You deliver the communication. The audience receives the story. They are moved. The message lands. The audience-members act on the message at rates the information-first version would not have produced.
The pattern is: identify the message; locate human-scale heart-touching content that embodies the message; render the content with specificity; sequence heart-content first, message-content last; honor the 90/10 ratio; trust the maxim to operate at the cognitive level you cannot directly observe.
Your communications are technically correct but produce minimal behavioral response. The technical-correctness is the cognitive-content; the missing behavioral-response is evidence the heart-touching is absent or insufficient. The fix is to add (or move to the front) heart-touching content before delivering the message.
Your audience-members can repeat your message but do not act on it. Repetition is evidence of cognitive-internalization (the message was registered); absence of action is evidence of behavioral-internalization failure (the message was not internalized at the level that produces action). The two failures are different; the McKee maxim addresses behavioral-internalization specifically.
Your communications feel exhausting to deliver. Information-first delivery is cognitively expensive because you are continually overcoming the audience's evaluation-mode resistance. Heart-first delivery is cognitively easier because the audience's receptive-mode has been engaged. If your communications consistently exhaust you, the sequencing may be reversed.
Your audiences applaud politely but do not share your communications. Sharing-behavior is evidence of heart-touched-internalization. Polite-applause-only is evidence of information-only-internalization. The differential is diagnostic.
The maxim is fundamentally about the sequencing of affective and cognitive engagement in communication aimed at internalization. Several other domains have made convergent observations.
Pedagogical research / emotional engagement and learning: Cognitive-pedagogy research consistently documents that students who are emotionally engaged during instruction retain material at substantially higher rates than students who receive the same material without emotional engagement. The research literature is extensive. Put pedagogical-research findings alongside the McKee maxim: pedagogy supplies the empirical evidence for the affect-cognition sequencing principle; storyteller-craft supplies the practitioner-grade operationalization. Both fields are operating on the same underlying cognitive primitive (the affect heuristic) from different application contexts. Educators and storytellers can productively cross-import each other's specific tactics.
Therapeutic intervention / emotional regulation precedes cognitive reframing: Modern evidence-based therapies (especially DBT and ACT) explicitly structure interventions around the principle that emotional regulation must precede cognitive reframing. A patient who is emotionally dysregulated cannot productively engage in cognitive-content work; the therapist must first stabilize the emotional state before introducing cognitive material. The structural parallel to the McKee maxim is precise: affect precedes cognition. Pairing therapeutic tradition with storyteller-craft makes the maxim's depth visible — both fields are operating the same sequencing principle at very different scales (storyteller producing brief emotional state; therapist producing sustained emotional regulation), but both depend on the same underlying cognitive-architecture.
Persuasion / mood-induction research: Persuasion research on mood-induction effects documents that audiences in positive-mood states are more susceptible to persuasion than audiences in neutral-mood states; audiences in negative-mood states are more susceptible to certain types of persuasion (especially fear-based) than to others. The mood-induction findings collectively support the McKee maxim's broader claim that emotional state pre-conditions cognitive reception. Put persuasion-research alongside storyteller-craft and you see that practitioners and researchers have independently arrived at the same operational principle from different methodological entry points.
The Sharpest Implication The maxim implies that the dominant communication-failure mode in corporate, governmental, and educational contexts is the reversed-sequence approach to message-delivery — and that the fix is not better-message-content but better-sequencing of affect-first-cognition-following. The implication is uncomfortable for institutions that have built their communication-pedagogy around information-first models. Most corporate-communication training emphasizes the cognitive-content side (what to say) and under-trains the emotional-engagement side (how to sequence). The implication for organizations: a fundamental restructure of communication-training to put affect-engineering before cognitive-content-engineering would produce dramatic improvements in downstream behavioral outcomes that the current training does not produce.
