Every operation in the cosmos belongs to one of three functions. Something gets created (the Brahma function). Something gets preserved or maintained once created (the Vishnu function). Something gets dissolved to make room for the next cycle (the Shiva function). The Vedic apparatus assigns each of the 27 nakshatras to one of these three functions — exactly nine nakshatras per function — producing a cosmological-function-fingerprint that runs across the celestial map. Pai works through this classification at Research lines 923-944.1
Brahma (Creation, Karma — action) — the creative aspect; these are also Karma (action) Nakshatras. Nine nakshatras: Ashwini, Rohini, Punarvasu, Magha, Hasta, Vishakha, Mula, Shravana, Purva Bhadrapada.
Vishnu (Preservation, Bhoga — enjoyment) — reflection of the Brahma Nakshatra; preserve or maintain what is created; also Bhoga (enjoyment) Nakshatras. Nine nakshatras: Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada.
Shiva (Dissolution, Nasha — loss) — that which happens between the creative aspect and its reflection; the process of understanding that results in the loss of the many in view of the One; also Nasha (loss) Nakshatra. Nine nakshatras: Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Uttara Phalguni, Swati, Jyeshtha, Uttara Ashadha, Shatabhisha, Revati.2
The Tri-Murti classification operates at cosmological-function-level. A chart-element in a Brahma-nakshatra is operationally engaged in creative-action in the life-domain that house indicates. A chart-element in a Vishnu-nakshatra is operationally engaged in preservation-and-enjoyment in that house's domain. A chart-element in a Shiva-nakshatra is operationally engaged in dissolution-and-understanding-through-loss in that house's domain.
The Karma-Bhoga-Nasha overlay is operationally significant: Brahma-nakshatras predict active-doing, Vishnu-nakshatras predict receptive-enjoying, Shiva-nakshatras predict processes-that-end-things-to-make-room.
Tension with the singular-deity-per-nakshatra assignments. Each nakshatra has a specific deity (Yama at Bharani, Agni at Krittika, etc.). The Tri-Murti overlay is a meta-classification that groups nakshatras by which trimurti-function their specific-deity participates in. Yama-Bharani belongs to Vishnu-function because preserving the dharmic-order between worlds is preservation-work; Agni-Krittika belongs to Shiva-function because Agni's burning is dissolution. The mapping is interpretive, not surface-obvious.
Tension with the alternating-function pattern. The first three nakshatras are Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva. The pattern almost repeats but breaks at predictable points. The structural reading: the Vedic apparatus encodes cosmological-function-rotation across the celestial map in a near-regular pattern, with controlled variations.
Pai's Tri-Murti assignments converge with the broader Jyotish-lineage. The Frawley-Sutton-Trivedi-Behari corpus uses the same classifications. This is uniformly stable lineage-knowledge rather than school-specific interpretation.
Cross-domain → psychology. The Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva triad maps to developmental-stages of action-engagement-completion. Erik Erikson's psychosocial-stages operationally distinguish initiative-and-industry (Brahma), generativity (Vishnu), and integrity-vs-despair (Shiva). The Vedic system encodes the same developmental triad as a constitutional fit rather than a sequential-life-stage.
Cross-domain → behavioral-mechanics. The triad maps to organizational-lifecycle phases. Adizes's Corporate Lifecycle model identifies Courtship-Infancy-Go-Go-Adolescence (Brahma), Prime (Vishnu), Aristocracy-Salem-City-Bureaucracy-Death (Shiva). The Vedic system encodes which agents are constitutionally pre-equipped for each phase.
Cross-domain → creative practice. Brahma-placed writers produce new-form-creation; Vishnu-placed writers produce genre-mastery-and-preservation; Shiva-placed writers produce deconstructive-and-completing-work.
The sharpest implication. The 9-9-9 equal distribution of Tri-Murti functions matches the 9-9-9 distribution of Gana temperaments. The Vedic apparatus is structurally maintaining equal-distribution-balances across multiple classification axes. This is mathematical-cosmological design, not narrative happenstance.
Generative questions.
