Tell the Story to a Twelve-Year-Old

Hari faces a structural problem every long-form writer faces: years of research produce a wardrobe full of transcripts longer than War and Peace. How do you reduce that to a book? Hari has a specific technique. I will sit down with a 12-year-old and I tell them the story.1

He picks a twelve-year-old because a 12-year-old is smart enough that they can understand pretty much anything, but their attention span is not that great. Watching the kid's face is the diagnostic. The places where the kid gets bored are the places where your version of the story isn't working. If you're trying to edit on the page, it can be very complicated. But if you're just sitting opposite a person and you're looking into their eyes and you tell them the story — if I sit down and tell them the story of Chino, the trans-crack dealer, I can do that in 15 minutes.

The fifteen-minute spoken-word version is doing a compression-and-distillation operation that page-editing struggles to replicate. The body knows the story works when the kid's face is engaged. The body knows the story doesn't work when the kid drifts. The signal is fast, unmediated, and structurally honest.

Hari extends the principle: very few people get blocked when they speak. Some people are chronically shy or whatever, but not many people. The brain is so good at just filtering out the things that don't matter. The spoken-word format forces the writer to do the filtering in real time, with a real audience giving real signals, on a faster cycle than page-revision permits.

What This Actually Is

You're three months from finishing the book. You have a niece, nephew, or friend's kid in the right age range (10-14). You ask their parent if you can borrow them for an hour.
