You'd expect the story of Indian alchemy to end in the Middle Ages — a quaint craft that died when chemistry arrived. It didn't, quite. In 1940, in a chemistry lab at Benares Hindu University, in front of a professor, nine or ten Ayurvedic scholars, and the industrialist Birla, a vaidya named Krishna Pal Shastri did this: he hollowed out a soap nut, filled it with mercury, a little borax, and "a grain of a secret powder," sealed it with lime-and-molasses paste, and roasted it in a crucible on a charcoal fire. When the smoke cleared, he split the nut. Inside was metal that looked like silver. Half went to the professor's lab, half to Birla's lab in Calcutta. Both tested it as pure silver — with only the spectroscopy showing a faint variation from natural silver.1
Shastri said he could make gold too, by swapping ammonium chloride for borax. At Birla's urging he did, and kept making gold at three grams a week to cover his expenses. Marble plaques at two temples record that his manufactured gold totaled seventy thousand rupees.2 Alchemy didn't die when modernity arrived in India. It went on — in university labs, in newspaper stories, and, more deeply, in the way Indians still think about what metals are.
This page is about the afterlife of the alchemical tradition — what survived into the twentieth century, and in what forms. White is careful and a little wry about it: he met many people who claimed to know alchemists but could never produce one, and Siddhas who claimed powers but wouldn't show them.3 The living practice had mostly thinned out. But three residues remained, and they're more interesting than the question of whether anyone really makes gold.
The first residue is the transmutation-events themselves, recurring in the press — Shastri in 1940, A.C. Acharya producing gold from mercury in four days at Jamnagar in 1968 "under the eyes of ten goldsmiths, ten chemists, and six government ministers," more in the 1970s and 80s, the "secret ingredient" always named as siddhasūta, "perfected mercury."4 The second residue is a deep cultural assumption: that metals have consciousness. The third is the everyday survival — the eight-metal ring worn against malefic planets, the Nine Nāths identified with the eight metals or nine planets.5 The point isn't to verify the gold. It's that the alchemical worldview — living metal, perfected mercury, metals tied to planets and consciousness — outlived the craft.
The "metals have consciousness" idea isn't superstition bolted on; it falls straight out of tantric metaphysics. As Sanjukta Gupta puts it, in tantric thought even a stone is ultimately God, ultimately consciousness — but "a consciousness that has decided to conceal itself."6 God double-conceals: he hides that his true form is the individual soul, and he hides his nature as consciousness by manifesting as unconscious-seeming phenomena, like stones and metals. So there's no hard line between mind and mineral; the metal is consciousness in disguise. Given that, "metals respond to stimuli" isn't a leap — it's the expected behavior of concealed consciousness.
And twentieth-century scientists picked this up. The Bengali scientist Jagadish Bose built apparatus in the 1930s that, he claimed, showed tin responding to stimuli — chloroform stopping its "vibratory writings," a poison making the needle "write a death notice."7 T.R. Anantharaman, dean of engineering at BHU, gave a lecture mapping the four states of consciousness (matter, life, mind, super-mind) onto four metallurgical phases (gas, liquid, single-phase solid, multiphase solid), with the stages of yoga corresponding to phase-transformations in the solid, and samādhi to the "nucleation" by which a new crystalline phase grows.8 The old homology — as in metal, so in the body — survives intact, now dressed in metallurgy and spectroscopy. The vocabulary modernized; the underlying identity of metal and mind did not.

The most telling detail in the whole modern record is one phrase in the 1940 account: the manufactured silver "tested out as pure silver, with only the spectroscopy showing a slight variation from that of natural silver."1
Sit with that. The metal passed as silver — color, weight, chemical behavior — but the spectroscope found a faint difference from naturally-occurring silver. White doesn't tell us what to make of it, and that restraint is the point. To a debunker, the "slight variation" is the tell: it wasn't real silver, the experiment was flawed or fraudulent. To a believer, it's the opposite: of course alchemical silver, made by transmuting mercury, would carry a faint signature distinguishing it from ore-silver — that's exactly what you'd predict if transmutation were real. The same data point reads as proof either way, depending on what you already believe.
That ambiguity is the honest center of the modern alchemy story. White, who tried hard to verify these accounts and mostly couldn't (he couldn't even confirm whether Shastri died of poisoning or spent his gold on the horses), keeps reporting the claims with their irreducible uncertainty.9 He neither debunks nor endorses. The 1940 experiment is a perfect specimen: documented, witnessed, recorded on temple plaques — and still impossible to settle, because the one anomaly in the data (the spectroscopic variation) is precisely the thing both sides claim. The modern history of Indian alchemy is a series of these undecidable events, and the discipline is to hold the claim and the doubt together rather than collapsing into either the credulous or the dismissive.
You come across a newspaper story: an Ayurvedic pharmacist made gold from mercury, witnessed by chemists and ministers. Your modern reflex fires — fraud, or error, obviously. White's discipline asks you to slow down and do two things at once.
First, don't dismiss it as obviously impossible-therefore-false, because that reflex stops you from learning anything about what the claim means to the people making and repeating it. The recurring press stories, the temple plaques, the "perfected mercury" as the named secret — these are real cultural facts whatever the metallurgy, and they tell you the alchemical worldview is alive. Second, don't credulously accept it either, because the verification never quite closes — the witnesses, the variation in the spectroscopy, the inability to corroborate. So you hold the report at arm's length, neither swallowing nor spitting it out, and you attend to the more answerable question: not "is the gold real?" but "what does it tell us that twentieth-century India keeps producing, reporting, and memorializing transmutation?" That second question has a rich answer; the first has only an ambiguous spectroscope.
The first failure is the debunker's, who reads the whole modern record as obvious fraud and closes the book. This misses everything interesting: the survival of the worldview, the scientists who took "living metal" seriously, the way the homology re-tooled itself in metallurgical language. Treating it as just-fraud is as incurious as treating it as just-true; either way you've stopped looking at the actual phenomenon, which is a worldview outliving its craft.
The second failure is the credulous one, which seizes on the temple plaques and the witnesses as proof that transmutation is real and modern science is hiding it. White never goes there — he reports that he couldn't corroborate, that the spectroscopy showed a variation, that the practice has thinned to near-absence. To turn the ambiguous record into a triumphant "alchemy works!" is to ignore the author's careful, repeated uncertainty and to mistake cultural persistence for empirical confirmation. The worldview surviving is not the gold being real.
White is the main voice, but he stages a quiet convergence between the medieval tradition and twentieth-century Indian scientists — Bose, Anantharaman — and the convergence is the interesting tension. Bose, a credentialed modern physicist, and Anantharaman, a dean of engineering, both reach for the same idea the medieval rasa texts held: that metal and consciousness are continuous, that what happens in metal maps onto what happens in mind. They arrive via modern instruments (Bose's apparatus, Anantharaman's phase-diagrams) at a conclusion the alchemists reached via yathā lohe tathā dehe. White doesn't claim the scientists are crypto-alchemists; he shows that the cultural substrate — the assumption of living, conscious metal — was deep enough to shape how even modern Indian scientists framed their work. What's unresolved is whether this is independent scientific intuition that happens to echo the old view, or the old view persisting as the unexamined frame within which the science got done. White leans toward the second without forcing it, and the ambiguity is honest: a worldview that deep doesn't announce itself as a belief; it shows up as what feels obvious, even to a man with a spectroscope.
The plain version: worldviews outlive the practices that produced them, surviving as unexamined assumptions about what's obvious — and the assumption that matter is secretly alive or conscious is one of the most persistent. The pattern links the history of science with the psychology of how cultures retain old frames inside new vocabularies.
The sharpest version. You probably assume that when science arrives, the old magical worldview it replaces simply dies — driven out by better methods. This page says it more often survives inside the new vocabulary, persisting as the unexamined frame that makes certain results feel obvious. A modern physicist demonstrated "living metal" with a needle and a chart; an engineering dean mapped samādhi onto crystal-nucleation. The alchemical conviction that metal and mind are one didn't get refuted — it got re-equipped. Take that seriously and it asks an uncomfortable question about your own worldview: which of the things that feel simply obvious to you — about mind, matter, value, self — are not conclusions you reached but inherited frames you've re-dressed in current language, and would you even recognize them as beliefs, or only as "the way things are"?
