Upagrahas: 5 Aprakāśa-Grahas + 7 Yama-Grahas

The Shadow Planets Most Practitioners Avoid

There are 9 visible grahas in the standard apparatus — Sun through Saturn plus Rāhu and Ketu. But Vedic-tradition recognizes another class of Upagraha (sub-graha) — invisible-but-measurable points calculated from the Sun's position and the day's-time-divisions. There are 10 Upagrahas total. Most practitioners avoid them — they look inauspicious-only, their calculation is time-consuming-and-disputed, and the field-literature on them is thin.

Larsen at line 2911 acknowledges this directly: "The basic understanding about the Upagraha is that they are only inauspicious. This understanding and the fact that there are 10 Upagraha tends to scare away most astrologers from the application of the Upagraha, as their calculation can become time consuming (and at times disputed) and their usage is often misunderstood by many."1

The 10 Upagrahas split into two groups: 5 Aprakāśa-Grahas (calculated from the Sun) and 7 Yama-Grahas (calculated from the day's-time-divisions). Together they extend the apparatus into the invisible-but-measurable dimension of chart-analysis.

The 5 Aprakāśa-Grahas

Aprakāśa means without effulgence — without glow. The Aprakāśas are calculable phenomena that do not visibly-shine but operationally-affect.

The 5 Aprakāśa-Grahas: Dhūma, Vyatīpāta, Pariveṣa, Indra-Chāpa, Upāketu.

Calculation cascade (lines 2923-2931):

  1. Dhūma = Sun's longitude + 133°20′ (= 4 signs + 13°20′)
  2. Vyatīpāta = (360° − Dhūma) added from Aries; opposite mirror of Dhūma
  3. Pariveṣa = Vyatīpāta + 180° (= 6 signs); exactly opposite Vyatīpāta
  4. Indra-Chāpa = (360° − Pariveṣa) added from Aries; opposite mirror of Pariveṣa
  5. Upāketu = Indra-Chāpa + 16°40′

Verification: Upāketu + 30° (1 sign) = Sun's longitude again (the cascade closes back to Sun).

Notable structural features:

  • The cascade begins and ends with Sun's longitude (verification-circle)
  • Pariveṣa is always opposite Vyatīpāta (180° apart)
  • Vyatīpāta and Indra-Chāpa are mirrors of Dhūma and Pariveṣa

Example operational-significance: Larsen at line 2921 explains Dhūma's calculation: when Sun is in the 9th house, Dhūma falls in the Lagna. This is the time-of-day when the sun's rays are most-deadly (hottest sun-time, roughly 1-2 PM). The mid-day-deadly-heat is caused by Dhūma-on-Lagna. The Aprakāśas are not arbitrary — they map physical-environmental-phenomena.

Pārāśara's Usage (line 2940-2944):

  • If an Aprakāśa-graha joins the lord of the Sun-sign → one's lineage (children and followers) suffers
  • If an Aprakāśa-graha joins the lord of Moon-sign → one's longevity suffers
  • If an Aprakāśa-graha joins the lord of Lagna → one's intelligence suffers; insanity can be experienced

The architecture: Aprakāśa-grahas afflict the chart-domain corresponding to the planet-they-join. Sun-domain affliction = lineage; Moon-domain = longevity; Lagna-domain = intelligence/sanity.

The 7 Yama-Grahas

The standard-literature mentions 5 Upagrahas. The tradition mentions 7 to be the appropriate number — 7 Upagrahas for 7 grahas. They are based on time-periods in a day and are called Yama-Grahas because they follow the sunrise-and-sunset of the Sun. Yama is the name of the God-of-death (son of the Sun-god). The portions they occupy are called Vela — they are also known as Vela-Grahas.

Table 38 at line 2948:

Graha Upagraha
Sun Kāla
Mars Mṛtyu
Mercury Ardha-Prahāra
Jupiter Yama-Ghaṇṭaka
Saturn Gulika

Plus 2 more (Moon's Upagraha and Venus's Upagraha) that complete the 7 Yama-Grahas.

Calculation method (lines 2960-2987):

  • 8 Yamas progress between sunrise and sunset (daytime)
  • 8 more between sunset and following sunrise (nighttime)
  • Day-birth uses daytime-Yamas only
  • Night-birth uses nighttime-Yamas only
  • The 8 Yamas are lorded by 7 grahas + Śūnya (void) — the 8th Yama-position
  • The first daytime-Yama is the day's-Vāra-lord (Tuesday's first Yama = Mars)
  • Each Yama-length = day-length / 8
  • The Upagraha rises at the middle of its Yama-portion
  • Nighttime begins from the 5th weekday from the day-lord (Sunday-day → Thursday-Jupiter-first-night-Yama)

Example for Sunday with 12-hour day (sunrise 6:40, sunset 18:40):

  • Yama 1 (6:40-8:10) — Sun-Kāla (rising at 7:25)
  • Yama 2 (8:10-9:40) — Moon (rising at 8:55)
  • Yama 3 (9:40-11:10) — Mars-Mṛtyu (rising at 10:25)
  • Yama 4 (11:10-12:40) — Mercury-Ardha-Prahāra (rising at 11:55)
  • Yama 5 (12:40-14:10) — Jupiter-Yama-Ghaṇṭaka (rising at 13:25)
  • Yama 6 (14:10-15:40) — Venus (rising at 14:55)
  • Yama 7 (15:40-17:10) — Saturn-Gulika (rising at 16:25)
  • Yama 8 (17:10-18:40) — Śūnya (rising at 17:55)

The Yama-Graha Names as Operational Function

Larsen at line 2993: "The Paramparā teaches that the names of the Upagraha, deal with their ability to overcome others, i.e. Yama Ghaṇṭaka shows the ability of Jupiter to obstruct or stop Yama from doing his work, namely causing death. Here Jupiter has taken the role as jīva or life to avoid the evil of the death and demise. Gulika indicates the ability to take on the sins and evils of other beings, i.e. drink the poison created by others. This is symbolized by Shiva as Viṣa-hara drinking the poison created from the churning of the ocean, whilst Māndi does the exact opposite and gives others the poisons we have created."2

  • Yama-Ghaṇṭaka (Jupiter's) — obstructs Yama from causing death. Jupiter-as-Jīva-protector.
  • Gulika (Saturn's) — takes on sins and evils of others. Saturn-as-Śiva-Viṣa-hara (poison-drinker).
  • Māndigives others the poisons we have created. Opposite of Gulika.
  • Kāla (Sun's) — relates to time-as-death-bringer.
  • Mṛtyu (Mars's) — the death-bringer itself.

Each Yama-Graha-name specifies the operational-function of that Upagraha. The names are diagnostic-instructions for chart-reading.

The Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-Remedy-Timing Method

Larsen at lines 3008-3014 specifies an operational-method using Yama-Ghaṇṭaka for remedy-timing-prediction:

"Since Yama Ghaṇṭaka has the power to obstruct death of any bhāva, it becomes pertinent to understand when remedies for the various bhāvas should be performed, using this same Upagraha."

The 3-step method:

  1. Add the degrees of Lagna and Yama-Ghaṇṭaka
  2. Multiply by 1 for Lagna-remedy, 2 for 2nd-house-remedy, etc. (depending on the bhāva)
  3. The result reveals a Rāśi. When transit-Jupiter has Rāśi-Dṛṣṭi on this bhāva, it is the best time to perform remedies for that bhāva.

This method reveals when the Guru will bless the bhāva-in-question and when the remedy will work. It is a Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-derived timing-protocol for remedy-performance.

Larsen notes (line 3016) that there are other simpler methods, but this is quite reliable. The Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-remedy-timing-method is presented as reliable-but-relatively-complex.

Implementation Workflow: Reading Aprakāśas + Yamas

Open the chart. You have time-of-birth. You can calculate Upagrahas precisely if you have software (Śrī Jyoti Star or Jagannātha Horā handle this automatically).

Aprakāśa-diagnostic:

  • Locate each of the 5 Aprakāśas in the chart (positions from Sun-cascade)
  • Note any Aprakāśa joined to Sun-sign-lord, Moon-sign-lord, or Lagna-lord
  • Predict per Pārāśara's usage rule (lineage / longevity / intelligence-and-sanity)

Yama-Graha-diagnostic:

  • Identify the Yama-of-birth (which of the 8 Yamas was operative at birth-time)
  • The Yama-Graha-of-birth carries specific operational-meaning per the name (Kāla, Mṛtyu, Ardha-Prahāra, Yama-Ghaṇṭaka, Gulika)
  • Specifically note Yama-Ghaṇṭaka and Gulika positions — these are most-operationally-used in standard practice

Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-remedy-timing:

  • For any bhāva requiring remedy, calculate the 3-step formula
  • Track transit-Jupiter; perform remedies when Jupiter aspects the calculated-Rāśi

The diagnostic takes 5-10 minutes with software. Without software, hand-calculation can take 30-45 minutes.

The Upagraha-Misread Failure (Diagnostic Signs)

A practitioner not using Upagrahas shows specific failures:

  • They cannot explain Sun-related-lineage-difficulties in charts with Aprakāśa-Sun-affliction
  • They cannot explain Moon-related-longevity-difficulties in charts with Aprakāśa-Moon-affliction
  • They cannot prescribe optimal remedy-timing without the Yama-Ghaṇṭaka method
  • They treat Upagrahas as uniformly inauspicious missing the protective-function-of-Yama-Ghaṇṭaka and the sin-absorbing-function-of-Gulika

Tensions

The Upagraha-calculation-disputes Larsen mentions (line 2913) are real. Different software-implementations and different lineage-teachings produce different Upagraha-positions for the same birth-time. The vault preserves the Larsen-Rath-lineage method.

The 5-vs-7-Upagraha-count is a settled-tension. Standard-literature uses 5; tradition uses 7. Larsen presents both. Practitioners disagreeing on the count may produce different remedy-recommendations.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Upagraha-usage is Larsen-distinctive in operational-depth within the held vault-sources. Foss does not develop Upagrahas. Kurczak/Fish reference Upagrahas briefly. Pai and DiCara do not foreground them.

The convergence: all sources accept the existence of Upagrahas in Vedic-tradition. The split: only Larsen develops their operational-application in depth, particularly the Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-remedy-timing method.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

The Upagraha-as-invisible-measurable-influence architecture has structural parallels in two domains.

  • biology: Invisible Physiological Influences on Behavior — physiology has established that invisible-but-measurable physiological-variables (cortisol-levels, blood-glucose, neurotransmitter-balance, gut-microbiome-composition) exert significant influence on behavior and mood despite being invisible to the person experiencing them. The invisible-influence is measurable through testing but is normally below conscious-awareness. The structural parallel to the Aprakāśa-Upagrahas (without-effulgence — invisible-but-calculable) is direct: both apparatuses identify invisible-but-measurable influences that affect operational-outcomes. The cross-domain insight: contemporary physiology has empirically-validated the influence-of-invisible-measurable-variables. The Vedic-Upagraha-apparatus asserts parallel structural-influence at the chart-level. The Vault holds the parallel because it normalizes the Upagraha-apparatus as legitimate-invisible-influence-analysis rather than as occult-mysticism.

  • psychology: Implicit Attitudes and Implicit Association Tests — social-psychology has developed the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and related methods to measure implicit-attitudes — beliefs and biases operating below conscious-awareness that nonetheless affect behavior. The implicit-attitudes are not visible to the person holding them but are measurable through specific testing protocols and predict behavior in ways the person's conscious-attitudes do not. The structural parallel to the Upagraha-apparatus is direct: both identify operationally-significant influences that operate below conscious-awareness and are measurable through specific calculation-or-testing. The Vault holds the parallel because it provides cross-domain validation of the invisible-but-measurable-influence principle.

The Live Edge

The Sharpest Implication

If the Upagraha-apparatus is operationally accurate, then practitioners avoiding Upagraha-analysis (the majority per Larsen's line 2911 statement) systematically miss significant chart-influences. The 5-10-minute Upagraha-diagnostic with software produces information not available from standard 9-graha-analysis. The Yama-Ghaṇṭaka-remedy-timing-method specifically transforms generic-remedy-advice into specific-Jupiter-transit-timed remedies. The avoidance of Upagrahas across the field is systematic-undersuse.

Generative Questions

  • The Upagraha-calculation-disputes mentioned at line 2913 require resolution. Comparative-analysis of major-software-implementations (Śrī Jyoti Star, Jagannātha Horā, Parashara's Light) would identify which calculation-method is operationally-most-accurate.
  • The Aprakāśa-Sun-cascade closes with verification (Upāketu + 30° = Sun). This is a mathematical-architecture-feature that suggests the apparatus is internally-coherent. Is the architectural-closure-property evidence of derivation-from-Sun-position-only rather than empirical-observation?

Connected Concepts

Open Questions

  • The 5-vs-7-Upagraha-count discrepancy: which list is the original-Pārāśara list and which is tradition-augmentation? Direct ingest of Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śastra Upagraha-chapter would clarify.
  • The Aprakāśa-Dhūma-as-mid-day-deadly-heat claim (line 2921) is empirically-testable. The Sun-9th-house-Dhūma-Lagna-time should correlate with maximum-environmental-heat-effects.
  • The 8th Yama-as-Śūnya (void) position is named but not operationally-developed. What does Śūnya-Yama-birth specifically indicate?
