The natal Lagna tells you about the body and the karma-coming-at-you. The Ārūḍha Lagna tells you about the projected-self-image. The Kāraka-Lagna tells you about the soul's current-life curriculum. The Navāmsa-Lagna tells you about the inner-marriage-and-dharma chart. Each of these is a distinct Lagna in the multi-Lagna interpretive sphere.
Larsen names a fifth specialized Lagna: the Varṇadā-Lagna. This is the Lagna specifically used for reading which Varṇa (profession-caste) the native is structurally-suited-for. It is calculated by combining Lagna-and-Horā-Lagna positions through a parity-based formula and identifies the sign whose Varṇa-classification specifies the native's work-orientation.1
Larsen at lines 2558-2562:
Step 1. Count the position of the Lagna or Horā Lagna. Count forward from Aries if they occupy an odd sign; count backwards from Pisces if they occupy an even sign. The count should be an odd number in both cases.
Step 2. If Lagna and Horā-Lagna both occupy odd signs or both occupy even signs, add their values. If they occupy signs of different oddity, subtract (deduct values from each other and find the difference). The result should be a positive even value.
Step 3. With the resultant value, count the same number forward from Aries if the Lagna is in an odd sign, or backwards from Pisces if Lagna is in an even sign. The result is the Varṇadā-Lagna.
After this exercise (without degrees), the result should be in an even house from the Lagna.
Figure 7 at line 2568 shows Acyuta Dasa's chart. The calculation walks through (lines 2570-2581):
Libra is an airy sign → Śudra-Varṇa (per parampara-list). The Varṇadā-Lagna lord is Venus, placed in a watery sign → Brahmin-Varṇa.
Reading: Acyuta Dasa was initially given Śudra-type work (service), but the lord Venus's exalted-watery placement specifies that he would change to Brahmin-work and enjoy great happiness from Venus's exaltation. Venus unconjoined → Venus alone specifies the Brahmin-work-type — consultant-Brahmin (advisor, astrologer, therapist). Actualization: Acyuta Dasa was the renowned Jyotiṣa for the heads of Orissa.
Larsen at line 2558 acknowledges a methodological dispute: "Some authors assume that the calculation of the Varṇadā Lagna must be performed with reference to the actual degrees of the Lagna and Horā Lagna; however no scriptures mentioning the calculation have this mentioned. While such discussions may seem cumbersome, the position of the Varṇadā Lagna in some charts may vary with or without the usage of degrees."2
Larsen presents the calculation without using exact degrees. The simplified-method gives the Varṇadā-Lagna in whole signs. The degree-based method would give specific Varṇadā-Lagna degrees which can sometimes shift the resulting-sign across boundaries. Larsen acknowledges the dispute and uses the simpler-non-degree-method as default; practitioners using the degree-method may get different results in edge-cases.
The pattern Larsen demonstrates is:
When sign-Varṇa = lord-Varṇa, the work-direction is unified throughout life. When they differ, there is typically a shift over the lifetime — starting in the sign-Varṇa-work (required), eventually moving into the lord-Varṇa-work (inclined). Acyuta Dasa's case is the paradigm: Śudra-required-service shifted to Brahmin-consultant-fulfillment.
The lord's chart-position refines further. Venus in own/exalted sign indicates strong fulfillment of the lord-Varṇa-direction. Venus debilitated or afflicted indicates delayed or compromised shift. Conjunctions with the lord refine the specific occupation within the Varṇa-category.
A client asks: "What kind of work should I do?"
Step 1. Calculate the Varṇadā-Lagna using the parity-based formula. Apply the 3-step procedure.
Step 2. Verify the result falls in an even house from the Lagna (sanity-check on the calculation).
Step 3. Identify the Varṇadā-Lagna sign's Varṇa — what type-of-work is the native required to perform?
Step 4. Identify the Varṇadā-Lagna lord. Note the lord's sign-placement. Identify the lord's sign-Varṇa — what type-of-work is the native inclined-toward?
Step 5. Check the lord's strength. Exalted/own-sign? Predict strong-shift-to-inclined-Varṇa-work. Debilitated/afflicted? Predict obstructed-shift; native may stay in required-service-Varṇa-work longer.
Step 6. Check the lord's conjunctions. The specific occupation-within-the-Varṇa is refined by the lord's planetary-companions.
Step 7. Tell the client: "Your structural-work-orientation is [required-Varṇa] initially, shifting to [inclined-Varṇa] over the lifetime. The specific occupation will involve [refined-by-lord-and-conjunctions]. The timing of the shift is [Daśā-period when lord activates]."
The reading takes 15-25 minutes. The information it produces specifies type-of-work-fit that 10th-house-only reading does not surface.

The calculation-with-degrees-vs-without-degrees produces different results in some charts. Larsen uses the simplified-method but acknowledges the dispute. Practitioners disagreeing on the method may produce different Varṇadā-Lagnas for the same chart. The vault preserves both methods without resolving.
The Varṇadā-Lagna apparatus is one of multiple career-reading methods. The Dasāṃśa (D-10) chart, the 10th-house, the Chara-Kāraka Atmakāraka-and-Amātyakāraka pattern, and the Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva element-fit all contribute career-readings. The Varṇadā-Lagna specifies type-of-work-Varṇa specifically; other methods specify other dimensions.
The Varṇadā-Lagna method is consistent within Rath-lineage transmission as Larsen presents it. Other practitioner-lineages may use Varṇadā-Lagna differently or not at all. Foss does not use Varṇadā-Lagna. Kurczak/Fish reference Varṇadā briefly. Pai and DiCara do not foreground it.
The Varṇadā-Lagna as a derived-Lagna-for-specific-question apparatus has structural parallels in two domains where derived-variables produce specific operational-information.
psychology: Derived Vocational Indices from Primary Personality Data — vocational-psychology has developed derived indices from primary personality-assessment data. The MBTI provides 4 base-dimensions; derived from these are 16 specific personality-types. The Strong Interest Inventory provides specific interest-scores; derived from these are 6 Holland-Code occupational-themes. The derived-indices are mathematically-constructed from the primary-data but provide question-specific operational-information that primary-data alone does not surface. The structural parallel to Varṇadā-Lagna is direct: both apparatuses derive a specific-question-Lagna from primary-data (natal-Lagna + Horā-Lagna) using a defined-formula to produce question-specific (Varṇa) information. The cross-domain insight: derived-Lagna apparatus in Vedic-astrology operates with the same mathematical-derivation-from-primary-data principle that contemporary vocational-psychology uses. biology: Composite Biomarkers from Multiple Physiological Measurements — clinical-medicine has developed composite biomarkers that combine multiple primary-measurements into a question-specific index. The Framingham Risk Score combines age, sex, cholesterol, blood-pressure, smoking-status, and diabetes-status into a composite cardiovascular-event-risk-prediction. The MELD score combines bilirubin, creatinine, and INR into a liver-transplant-priority-score. The composite-biomarkers operate on the same principle as the Varṇadā-Lagna: combine primary-measurements through a defined-formula to produce question-specific operational-information. The Vault holds the parallel because it provides cross-domain validation of the derived-composite-variable approach.
The Sharpest Implication
If the Varṇadā-Lagna apparatus is operationally accurate, then career-counseling using the natal-Lagna or 10th-house alone systematically misses the type-of-work-fit dimension. The 5-minute Varṇadā-Lagna calculation produces information not available elsewhere. Most contemporary Vedic-astrology training does not foreground Varṇadā-Lagna for career-reading; the apparatus is operationally-undersused.
