You probably did not know that Viṣṇu started as a stick. A specific stick. Twelve finger-breadths tall (aṅgula), inscribed in a circle twenty-four finger-breadths in diameter, used by Vedic-period priests to track the movement of the sun across the sky. The stick was the gnomon of the ancient Indian sundial. The Sanskrit name for the gnomon: chāyāpuruṣa — the "shadow-person." The gnomon's three reference points — sunrise, noon, sunset — became "Viṣṇu's three strides" (trivikrama). This is Harry Falk's reading of the Vedic Viṣṇu mythology. The chāyāpuruṣa thesis is one of the most penetrating philological achievements in 20th-century Vedic studies. White uses it as the foundational metaphysical anchor for the entire Vaiṣṇava embodied-ascent tradition.1 Once you see Viṣṇu as the gnomon, everything else falls into place: the aṅguṣṭha-prādeśa-mātra "thumb-or-span sized" puruṣa in the heart, the wide-striding vikrama sun-tracker, the three-strides cosmology, the seven-strides solstice doctrine, the trivikrama iconography, the Puruṣa Sūkta of RV 10.90 with its "thousand shadows" (sahasrapāt) and "ten finger-breadths" (daśāṅguli) height.
Falk's textual reconstruction traces the gnomon-Viṣṇu identification through several Vedic and post-Vedic sources.
The Vedic span-high post. The Vedic literature contains "frequent references" to Viṣṇu as a "span-high post or stick."1 A span is the distance between the outstretched thumb and the little finger — twelve finger-breadths in the ancient Indian system of measures. This is the standard sundial gnomon height. The Brāhmaṇa literature describes Viṣṇu as a "span-sized embryo" (garbha), reinforcing the small-stick identification.
The trivikrama doctrine. Viṣṇu's three strides — most famously associated with the Vāmana-avatāra story where the dwarf Viṣṇu strides across the three worlds — are originally the three reference points the gnomon's shadow marks on the sundial circle: morning (when the shadow first crosses the circle), noon (when the shadow is shortest), and evening (when the shadow crosses the circle again). The 24-aṅgula circle. The sundial's circle was twenty-four finger-breadths in diameter — twice the gnomon's height. The thousand-shadows reading of RV 10.90. Falk reads the Puruṣa Sūkta's opening line "the puruṣa has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand shadows (sahasrapāt)" as a description of the gnomon: thousand-shadowed because, across the year, the gnomon's shadow falls in approximately a thousand positions. "While proceeding across the earth in all directions, he has risen [to the height of] ten finger-breadths above the plane of the sundial."1 The ten finger-breadths height is the gnomon's shadow length on the day of the summer solstice (per Shamasastry's analysis). The "ten finger-breadths" of RV 10.90 is a specific shadow measurement, not a generic poetic image.
The chāyāpuruṣa as standard measure. The Arthaśāstra preserves the technical use: "Twelve aṅgulas make a span and the height of the gnomon," literally the chāyāpuruṣa. Kautilya uses pauruṣa — "relating to the gnomon's length" — as a unit of measure for shadow-length calculations.1 The pauruṣa (gnomon-related) measurement is a technical unit in the Indian metrological system.
The gnomon-Viṣṇu identification does load-bearing metaphysical work for the entire later Vaiṣṇava tradition. Four things.
First: it grounds the thumb-sized puruṣa in the heart doctrine. The MU 6.38, BhP 2.2.8, and KU all describe the inner puruṣa as "aṅguṣṭha-prādeśa-mātra" — thumb-or-span sized.1 This is not a poetic image of a small inner deity; it is a technical specification matching the gnomon's height. The inner puruṣa is the same thing as the gnomon, located in the heart. The microcosm-macrocosm fractal architecture has a measured connection: the inner puruṣa and the outer Viṣṇu are the same size because they are both gnomons operating at different scales (the heart-cosmos and the sun-cosmos).

Third: it grounds the prāpyakāri perceptual architecture. Falk's reading: the gnomon-Viṣṇu identification "anticipates the prāpyakāri model of visual perception, with the man in the sun traveling out from that orb to grasp and illuminate its homologue, the gnomon."1 The shadow that the gnomon casts is the contact between the sun's emitted ray and the gnomon's surface. The shadow is the content of the cosmic perception — what the sun-puruṣa sees when it looks at the gnomon-puruṣa is the shape of its own outgoing ray, modified by contact with the gnomon. The prāpyakāri architecture is encoded in the sundial's operation fifteen hundred years before Praśastapāda formalizes it.
Fourth: it provides the tantric dvādaśānta anchor. The tantric term dvādaśānta — "end of the twelve" — denotes the point twelve finger-breadths above the crown of the head where the individual self merges with the transcendent self.1 The twelve is the gnomon's height. The tantric dvādaśānta is the gnomon's projection out of the crown. The architecture: your crown is the gnomon's base; the dvādaśānta twelve-aṅgula-above-the-crown point is where the gnomon's tip would be if your body were a gnomon. The tantric subtle-body doctrine inherits this gnomon-measurement.
This page is the philological-archaeological anchor for the entire Vaiṣṇava metaphysical tradition in the vault. Whenever a Sanskrit text describes Viṣṇu's strides, the thumb-sized inner puruṣa, the trivikrama doctrine, or the dvādaśānta tantric point — the substrate the doctrine is operating on is the gnomon-Viṣṇu identification Falk reconstructs. It also gives the vault a striking example of forgotten technical substrate. The medieval Vaiṣṇava tradition retained the vocabulary of Viṣṇu's strides and the iconography of the dwarf-becomes-cosmic-figure without retaining the technical understanding that these were originally descriptions of sundial operation. The substrate became invisible to the tradition that depended on it.
The Vāmana myth — Viṣṇu appearing as a dwarf to King Bali, requesting only "three steps' worth" of land, then growing to cosmic size and crossing the three worlds in three steps — is one of the most celebrated stories in the Hindu corpus. The standard reading: a charming theological allegory about divine deception, cosmic sovereignty, devotional submission.
Falk's reading: the myth is a narrative encoding of the sundial's operation. The dwarf is the gnomon (small, twelve-aṅgula). The three steps are the three reference points (sunrise, noon, sunset). The growth from dwarf to cosmic figure is the projection of the small gnomon's shadow across the cosmic-scale circle of the heavens. The Vāmana myth is the theological encoding of the technical sundial operation that Vedic priests performed in their daily ritual practice.
This re-reading is striking because it does not contradict the standard theological reading; it deepens it. The Vāmana myth becomes operationally precise: the dwarf is real (the gnomon is real); the three steps are measured (the sundial points are measured); the cosmic-scale growth is projected (the shadow is the projection). The theological meaning (divine sovereignty over the three worlds) is grounded in the technical operation (the gnomon tracks the sun's movement across the three worlds). The myth is thinking through the sundial's operation in narrative form.
This makes the medieval Vaiṣṇava tradition's avatāra doctrine richer. The Vāmana avatāra is not just one of Viṣṇu's ten classical descents; it is the avatāra most directly tied to Viṣṇu's foundational technical operation — sun-tracking through sundial. The other avatāras are downstream sectarian additions; Vāmana is original to the gnomon-Viṣṇu architecture.
You read Falk's article (published in Brahmavidya or the Indo-Iranian Journal; White cites it). You read the RV 10.90 Puruṣa Sūkta. You read the Vāmana myth in any reliable Purāṇa translation. You hold the three sources side by side.
What you notice: the gnomon-Viṣṇu identification is not a strained reading. Once visible, it explains a number of textual details (the twelve-aṅgula thumb-size, the three-strides doctrine, the sahasrapāt "thousand-shadows" descriptor, the daśāṅguli ten-finger-breadths measurement) that the standard theological reading leaves as decorative. Falk's reading does more work with the same text.
You think about what this does for reading the BhG. Kṛṣṇa identifies himself with the supreme puruṣa in BhG 15. The supreme puruṣa is the BU/JUB three-puruṣa architecture's ray-puruṣa. The ray-puruṣa is the same architecture as the gnomon-Viṣṇu — the sun's outgoing ray that touches the gnomon and produces the shadow. Kṛṣṇa is identifying himself with the gnomon-projecting ray. The BhG's apparently devotional theology is operationally rooted in the sundial architecture.
You sit with this. You do not change your reading of Vaiṣṇava texts. You add the gnomon substrate to your understanding. The texts become more legible, not less. The technical substrate makes the theological vocabulary grounded.
The failure mode is reading Vaiṣṇava texts as if they were free-standing theological claims with no technical substrate. The Vāmana myth becomes mere allegory. The thumb-sized puruṣa becomes mere poetic image. The trivikrama doctrine becomes mere cosmic-sovereignty rhetoric. The texts lose the operational grounding the gnomon substrate provides.
Diagnostic sign: you cannot explain why the inner puruṣa is specifically thumb-sized rather than some other size.
The honest reading recognizes the substrate. The thumb-size is measured (twelve aṅgula). The three strides are operational (three sundial reference points). The cosmic-scale growth is projected (gnomon shadow on cosmic circle). The texts are technical-cosmological claims wrapped in theological vocabulary, not theological claims that happen to use technical-sounding numbers.
White cites Falk directly.1 The textual evidence Falk marshals is dense: RV 10.90, the Brāhmaṇa span-high post references, the Vāmana myth, the dvādaśānta tantric term, the Arthaśāstra's chāyāpuruṣa/pauruṣa technical usage. The cumulative evidence is hard to dismiss once visible.
The first tension is whether the gnomon-Viṣṇu identification is original (Viṣṇu began as the sundial gnomon) or derivative (Viṣṇu was a Vedic sky god who acquired the gnomon-symbolism through associative mythologization). Falk's reading is at least partially originative: the identification is too tight at the technical level (twelve-aṅgula, three reference points, projection-shadow) to be merely associative. But Viṣṇu's broader theological development (cosmic-supreme deity, avatāra doctrine, Bhakti object) is clearly later layering on the gnomon substrate.
The second tension is whether the Puruṣa Sūkta (RV 10.90) was composed with the gnomon in mind or whether Falk is reading the hymn back through the lens of the post-Vedic sundial doctrine. The "thousand shadows" (sahasrapāt) and "ten finger-breadths" (daśāṅguli) details are too technically specific for a non-gnomonic reading to explain easily. But the Sūkta's broader cosmic-Puruṣa theology may not have been originally limited to the gnomon.
The third tension is the relationship between the gnomon-Viṣṇu and the Indo-Iranian solar deity tradition. The Iranian Mithra cult also has astronomical-mensural elements; the Kushan-period reintroduction of Iranian solar deities into the Indian subcontinent (Mihira) overlays the older gnomon-Viṣṇu tradition. The exact relationship between the two strands is unresolved.
White and Falk converge tightly; White takes Falk's philological reconstruction as authoritative and integrates it into the broader yoga-history project. The combination is powerful: Falk supplies the philological-archaeological anchor; White supplies the soteriological-operational implications.

If Viṣṇu started as a twelve-aṅgula sundial gnomon, then every modern Vaiṣṇava devotee imagining Viṣṇu as a cosmic personality is engaging the theological surface of a doctrine whose operational substrate is a forgotten Vedic-period astronomical instrument. The implication that cuts: the Vāmana avatāra's "three steps" are not mythological hyperbole; they are measured sundial reference points. The thumb-sized inner puruṣa is not poetic image; it is the gnomon located in the heart. The trivikrama is the sundial in operation. The Vaiṣṇava tradition has the technical substrate available in its textual record but has largely forgotten what the technical specifications were for. Recovering them changes the tradition's self-understanding.
