Above the doorways of major Egyptian temples — Karnak, Luxor, Dendera, Edfu — the same image recurs: a solar disk with wide-spread feathered wings flanking it, sometimes with two cobras hanging from its base. Contemporary visitors stop noticing it after the first few sites. It is everywhere because it is doing a specific cosmological job.1
The winged sun-disk is the sacred iconographic form of Bena / Heru Behdeti — the Mars-divinity, the immune-system body-shrine. The closing line of the Edfu temple inscription explicitly states that Heru Behdeti took upon himself the form of the winged disc and placed himself upon the front of the boat of Ra. The image's specific placement above doorways is a cosmological-defensive function: the immune-system divinity stationed at every threshold.
The image is the architectural-iconographic enactment of the same principle that operates at the cellular level. The doorway is a threshold; thresholds are where pathogens enter; pathogen-entry must be intercepted before the structure beyond is threatened. Wachet is the rearing, fire-spitting, venom-spitting cobra — the uraeus on the forehead of the crown of the king and queen-mother, and the serpent surmounting the solar disc (whether on the head of Ra, of Sekhmet, or on the winged disk).3 Nekhbet is the vulture; the two often pair as the protective deities of Upper and Lower Kemet. Sometimes both take the form of the fire-spitting cobra surmounting the fiery disc — which is why the winged disk can show one or two serpents at its base.3
This naming connects the doorway-protection function to the active-deployment one. The same fire-spitting cobra that guards the threshold is the serpent-diadem that wins battles. The victory stela of Thutmose III credits the king's victories to it directly — "it is his serpent diadem that overthrows them for him, his flame that drives away his enemies" — and the same cobra is the pinnacle of Amen's mountain at Napata (the rock spike read as Wachet crowned with the disc; see Gebel Barkal). So the winged disk's compressed cobra-lethality is not only the immune-system-at-the-threshold of Heru-Behdeti / Bena; it is the contractive pole of divine-hate in its active, fire-spitting form — guarding the door in peace, driving away the enemy in war.

The contemporary failure-mode is doorway-iconography stripped from architecture entirely. The doctrine would predict that loss of doorway-iconography produces increased entry of disordering influences into the spaces beyond.
