The framework is methodologically peculiar in a way I had not registered before — it operates negatively. Most craft-rules are positive ("do X to achieve Y"). The propriety-doctrine operates as a constraint-against-failure: it does not tell the writer what to do; it tells the writer what NOT to do, in highly context-specific ways. The writer who follows ten positive craft-rules can still fail; the writer who avoids the dozen specific improprieties of their specific aesthetic moment will succeed.

The expert writer doesn't follow positive craft-rules; they avoid context-specific improprieties. The propriety-doctrine names something about how expertise itself works — and contemporary craft-pedagogy may be teaching the wrong thing by emphasizing positive rules.
