Business Card: I Do These Things So You Don't Have To

The Capture

Macfarlane describes the Paris-catacombs crawl that produced sympathetic-kinesthetic claustrophobia in over a hundred readers. Then he says: I once thought about, when I was writing Underland, I thought about getting a business card which just read: I do these things so you don't have to.1

The joke compresses something serious. The writer's job-description in his framing is to undergo experiences the reader won't undergo and transmit the experience through prose. He is paid in book-sales for taking the bodily risk. The reader is paid in vicarious-experience that costs them nothing physical.

I sat with this. The business-card framing makes the writer-as-experience-proxy explicit in a way most writers don't. Investigative-journalists do something similar but rarely articulate it. Memoirists do something adjacent but typically frame it as personal-truth-telling rather than experience-curation. Macfarlane's framing makes the role load-bearing: the writer is a specialized expert in undergoing-and-transmitting.

The Live Wire

  • First wire (obvious): Writers like Macfarlane take physical risks readers benefit from.
  • Second wire (deeper): The writer-as-experience-proxy role exists as a recognizable craft-position with its own ethics, its own training, its own labor-economics. It is distinct from journalist (who reports what others undergo) and from memoirist (who reports what happens in the writer's daily life). The proxy goes into territory specifically to bring back the body-state. This is a job-description that should be named and studied.
  • Third wire (uncomfortable, optional): If the proxy is the writer's role, then the reader's relationship to the prose is more user-of-service than co-thinker. The implicit contract is closer to I paid for this experience; deliver it than to we are working through this together. This may be why some readers feel betrayed when the experience-transmission fails. The contract is more transactional than the literary-tradition usually admits.

The Connection It Makes

This spark touches visceral sympathetic kinesthesia directly — the business-card is the proxy-role that the transmission-mechanism serves. It also touches Macfarlane relational writing methodology — the WITH/BY-rivers methodology requires the writer to undergo the river to write it. And it touches vicarious experience as influence tool from behavioral-mechanics — the proxy-role has structural similarity to influence-craft's deployment of vicarious-experience to bypass evaluation.

What It Could Become

Essay seed: The Experience-Proxy Writer — name the role as a distinct craft-position. Map its ethics (consent; warning; representation). Map its labor-economics (publishing-advance-funded fieldwork; insurance; physical-risk underwriting). Map its history (the explorer-writer tradition; the war-correspondent tradition; the wilderness-writer tradition; the catastrophe-witness tradition). The piece would establish experience-proxy as a named position alongside journalist, memoirist, essayist, novelist.

Concept page candidate: If the proxy-role recurs in other vault sources (Wilson on undergoing-history; Bilton on going-to-Ulbricht's-sushi-place; Karlsson on summoning-cultures-via-incubation), it might warrant a dedicated concept page on the writer-as-experience-proxy archetype.
