The Capture

Pillai cites Arthashastra 1.19.6: divide the day and night into eight parts each, sixteen parts total. Each part runs 1.5 hours. The king's whole Rajavasathi — his living-and-working schedule — is built on this architecture. Wake at this part, meet your cook at this part, review troops at this part, sleep through these parts.

Then Pillai drops the line that stopped me cold: "It has been scientifically proven that an average person can focus on one thing for a maximum of ninety minutes." He notes English films run 90 minutes. Bollywood breaks at 90 minutes. University lectures run 90 minutes. He's making a vague gesture at modern research without citing it.

But the research is real. Nathaniel Kleitman in the 1950s proposed the Basic Rest-Activity Cycle (BRAC) — humans cycle through 90-minute waves of high-focus alertness and low-focus rest, all day and all night. Ernest Rossi extended it into productivity literature in the 1990s. The contemporary attention-research literature on ultradian rhythms — Anders Ericsson's deliberate-practice 90-minute blocks, Tony Schwartz's The Power of Full Engagement — all converge on the same number. Ninety minutes is the natural unit of human focused work.

Kautilya (or whoever compiled the Arthashastra — there's scholarly dispute about dating; let's say 4th century BCE to 2nd century CE) picked the same number. Twenty-four centuries earlier. Without EEG. Without chronobiology as a field. Without the word "ultradian" existing in any language. He just observed human attention and concluded: sixteen parts of one and a half hours each.

Either it's coincidence or it's data about humans.
