Mercury 67 (Udañmukha, facing North). Foss: "This describes the orientation of the statue of Mercury in the shrine of the nine Grahas. It is said Lord Shiva sits facing South so we face North to honour Him. Mercury is associated with Lord Vishnu and Vishnu and Shiva are always honouring each other. Vishnu is the infinite expansion and Shiva is the infinite silence. There is no difference at all in truth. Shiva is facing South as the Guru in the form of Dakṣināmurti. Those who face North are the ones sitting facing the teacher and thus the students (Shishya), indicated by Mercury." The geographic-direction is compressed-honour-relationship. The seating-arrangement IS the teaching-relationship.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): temple orientations follow tradition. Standard architectural note.
• Second wire (deeper): directional-orientation is relational-compression — the geometry of the shrine encodes who-honours-whom and who-is-the-student-vs-teacher. The architecture is doing semantic-work the practitioner reads through bodily-orientation.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): every meeting-room and classroom I've ever been in has had a directional-arrangement that encoded a relationship I may not have consciously noticed. The student-facing-teacher orientation in the West is identical to the Mercury-facing-Shiva arrangement, but the West does not articulate why — it just defaults to the arrangement. The Vedic tradition makes the implicit-meaning explicit through directional-deity-correspondence.
