Tulsīdās's Wife: "If You Were as Devoted to God as to Me..."

The Capture

Chandra 47 commentary on Mukti-da (giver of liberation). Foss tells the Tulsīdās story. The young Tulsīdās was utterly addicted to his new wife — could not get enough of their relationship. She, tired of it, made an excuse to go to her parents' house for the night. During the night, desperate, Tulsīdās crossed a river using a dead body and climbed to her window with the help of a large snake. He arrived in her room mid-night, mind paying no attention to the external details of what he was doing. His wife saw his state and said one line: "if you were as devoted to God as you are to me, you would easily be in the Divine presence." That stopped him. He immediately abandoned householder life and took to meditation. Became one of India's greatest devotees. Wrote the Rāma Charita Mānasa — the vernacular Rāma-story still wildly popular in India today.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): devotional capacity can be redirected from one object to another. Standard bhakti teaching.
• Second wire (deeper): the same energy that produces obsession can be redirected — what was Tulsīdās's-addiction-to-his-wife was structurally identical to what became his devotion-to-Rāma. The energy was always available; only the object changed. This means people with addiction-capacity have devotion-capacity in equal measure; what matters is what they aim at.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): my own current attachments are exactly the size of the devotion I am capable of. I cannot become more devotional than I am currently attached to whatever I am attached to. The cap is set by attachment-capacity, not by spiritual-aspiration.
