Govinda Himself Wrote the Book: Recursive Authorship Deselfing

The Capture

I'm reading the last paragraph of DiCara's book and he just dissolves himself off the page. "It appears that a man named Vic DiCara wrote this book. However, the Goddess Lakṣmī actually wrote it, empowering his fingers to strike the keys. But the truth is that Goddess Sarasvati truly wrote the book, having the knowledge and learning that allowed the typing fingers to move. Yet, the final reality at the root of it all is that Govinda himself wrote the book – to reveal himself to you more clearly." Four stages. Each one moves the authorship further from the man whose name is on the cover. I close the file. I sit for several minutes. This isn't a literary flourish. He means it. The book is Govinda showing himself through a deselfed-pair-of-hands. And if that's what writing-as-a-spiritual-practice actually looks like, then everything I think I know about being-the-author of my own work is upside-down.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): A Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava theological framing of authorship that places divine-source at the root of all individual-creative-action.
• Second wire (deeper): Try to write the way contemporary publishing teaches you and the way DiCara writes at the same time. You can't. One says: be the source, sharpen your voice, claim what's yours. The other says: dissolve yourself out of the line of sight so something else can come through. Those aren't styles. They're incompatible cosmologies of what writing is.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): I want to be the author of my own work. DiCara is asking me to give that up. And the gut-clench I feel reading that may itself be the practice — the part I'd have to die into before any of his sentences could land on me the way they land on him.

The second wire holds. Deselfed-writing and individual-achievement-claim aren't two flavors of one thing. They're two different rooms.

The Connection It Makes

• Karlsson's Writing as Summoning Culture — Karlsson treats writing as field-summoning (culture-as-field); DiCara treats it as deity-substrate-revelation. The structural-similarity (writer-as-instrument) is real; the substrate-difference (culture vs deity) reveals what each tradition takes as ultimately-real.
• Macfarlane's Visceral Sympathetic Kinesthesia — Macfarlane's technique of writing-that-causes-reader's-body-to-feel-what-writer-experienced requires the writer to disappear behind the experience. Same disappearance-of-writer move at the bodily-experiential level.

What It Could Become

Essay seed: What would deliberate-recursive-deselfing writing-practice look like? Could a practitioner systematically work through four-stage deselfing as a compositional-discipline (not just a closing-flourish)? What does the work look like that comes from that practice?

Collision candidate: The recursive-deselfing operates in tension with contemporary Western authorship-as-individual-achievement framings. Karlsson-summoning-culture, Macfarlane-becoming-conduit, DiCara-deselfing-into-deity-substrate all converge on writer-as-instrument. Could become a cross-source collision with contemporary-trade-publishing authorship-individualism.
