The Kodachadri Cobra: A Friend Standing as Tall as a Man
The Capture
Foss at Rāhu R12: "I am reminded of the story of a friend who was reaching the top of Kodachadri, a holy mountain in India. As he came over the rise, he was faced with a king cobra reared up. The Cobra stood as tall as him. Cobras are closely akin to Rāhu. He put his hands together in respectful salute, the cobra looked at him for a few moments and then left. On that mountain, the power of the Goddess prevents conflicts between animals and devotees. When we feel fear, belligerence is not the answer, humbleness and respect is best. Fear indicates the energy of Rāhu and Rāhu has a hand up to bless us if we are fit for it."
The story is small but operationally precise. Belligerence and flight are the two default-responses to fear; the third response is the respectful-salute. The cobra reads it. The cobra leaves. The friend descends the mountain.
The Live Wire
- First wire (obvious): "If you respect a cobra it will leave you alone."
- Second wire (deeper): The respectful-salute is not a tactical-trick. It is the embodied-recognition that Rāhu's fear-arousal is the friend's-greeting at the threshold. The salute is what you give to a presence whose blessing you are receiving. The cobra is teaching you what Rāhu is — by making you afraid enough to discover the response that wasn't fight-or-flight.
- Third wire (uncomfortable): Everything frightening in your life may be a cobra-on-Kodachadri. The defaults (belligerence, avoidance) close the encounter; the respectful-salute opens it. If this is true broadly, the modern Western pattern of treating fear-arousal as a problem to be eliminated is missing the entire structural-teaching the fear was offering.
The Connection It Makes
Connects to Rāhu as North Node / Shadow. Also to depth-psychology projection-handling (when projection arrives in cobra-form, the response is not to fight but to greet). Cross-domain to behavioral-mechanics — when a high-stakes opponent rises up before you, the operational move may be the respectful-salute (acknowledge the threat without engaging-or-fleeing), letting the threat dissipate by its own structural integrity.
What It Could Become
