The 109th Mantra: One Authorial Insertion in 972

The Capture

Across the entire 9-volume Foss corpus — 972 mantras (technically 973 with the exception) — exactly one volume has a non-108 mantra-count. Rāhu has 109. R108 is Deva (divine being). R109 is Dānava (demonic being). Foss writes at R109: "This is the 109th name. Being a natural contrarian, Rāhu has to have an extra name. The 108th was, as usual in these sets of names, pure divinity. This just gives us another chance to love him, like the friend who has a 'but' for anything we say."

That's the only place in the corpus where Foss inserts his own authorial gesture into the inherited Sanskrit-name structure. He flags it directly. He places it as the contrarian-friend reading — Rāhu is the friend who has a "but" for anything you say, so the apparatus itself must have a "but" appended to its standard 108.

The Live Wire

  • First wire (obvious): "Rāhu deserves an extra name because Rāhu is the contrarian principle."
  • Second wire (deeper): The 109 is Foss showing the reader, through structural-asymmetry, what Rāhu actually is. You meet Rāhu in the architecture before you meet Rāhu in the commentary. The structural-exception teaches what the words would only describe. This is a different kind of teaching from prose-commentary — it operates at the design-level.
  • Third wire (uncomfortable): If structural-asymmetry can teach what prose can only describe, then every other mantra-apparatus might have analogous structural-teachings hidden in its arrangement-decisions that modern editorial-republication has destroyed. The lineage-recovered apparatuses (Sanjay-Rath, Achyutānanda) preserve these; the Western-academic textbooks that select-and-organize don't.

The Connection It Makes

Connects to Rāhu as North Node / Shadow. Also to the K105 position-as-meaning page — both are instances of structural-position-as-teaching. The two together form Foss's design-as-teaching architectural-principle.

What It Could Become

Essay seed: "Design as Teaching — When the Arrangement of Sacred-Text Is the Sacred-Teaching." The Rāhu 109 + Ketu K105 examples as case-studies in how mantra-apparatus arrangement carries meaning that prose alone cannot.

Open question: Is the 109th mantra original to the eBook 2016-2017 edition or added in subsequent revisions? Print-edition comparison would settle.
