Five Twin-Names Across Volumes: The Spinal-Cosmology in Phonology
The Capture
Reading the Rāhu and Ketu volumes side-by-side surfaces something neither volume alone makes visible: five Sanskrit names appear in BOTH volumes at structurally-paired positions. Bhaktarakṣa at R101 and K105. Shāshvata at R94 and K90. Shāmbhava at R97 and K88. Pāpa-Graha at R96 and K63. Govinda-Vara-Pātra at R56 and Mukunda-Vara-Pātra at K42 — the same "container of Lord's Grace" structure with only the Vishnu-epithet swapping (Govinda the cowherd in Rāhu; Mukunda the liberator in Ketu).
Foss cross-references the K42-R56 pair explicitly: "Since Rāhu and Ketu are two parts of the same body, split by the discus of Lord Vishnu, they both have received His Grace." He does not draw the same explicit cross-reference for the other four pairs. The twin-architecture is operationally-active but only partially-named.
The Live Wire
- First wire (obvious): "Rāhu and Ketu are halves of the same demon, so they share names."
- Second wire (deeper): The twin-architecture is encoded at the language-level, not just the deity-mythology level. The mantra-name-repetition mirrors the spinal-cosmology — Rāhu the head, Ketu the tail, twin-names at paired positions across volumes. Sanskrit-mantra-organization can carry structural-architectural teaching that prose-mythology only describes. The five-twin-name pattern is the architectural-evidence of the spinal-cosmology claim that Foss makes throughout the two volumes.
- Third wire (uncomfortable): If the twin-architecture is original to the two prior Sanskrit-only sources (Saraswathy/Eeswaran and Ramachandra Rao), the architecture is older than the Foss-corpus and reflects a pre-Foss editorial-recognition of the spinal-cosmology at the language level. If the twin-architecture is Foss's editorial-ordering of those two prior sources, the architecture is Foss's interpretive-lens overlaid on inherited material. The print-edition comparison would settle this. Foss does not address the question.
The Connection It Makes
Connects to the dedicated Rāhu-Ketu axis page and to Foss's mantra acoustic-phonological theory (now extended to twin-graha pairs).
What It Could Become
Essay seed: "Phonology as Cosmology — When Mantra-Name Repetition Encodes Structural Architecture." Examining the five Rāhu-Ketu twin-pairs as a case-study in Sanskrit-mantra-arrangement-as-teaching.
Open question: Are the twin-name pairs original to Saraswathy/Eeswaran or Ramachandra Rao, or are they Foss's editorial ordering? Sanskrit-text comparison would settle.
