Hetep Is the Name of a Deity, Not Just a Greeting

Odwirafo is walking through ritual offering vocabulary and stops to say something that should have been load-bearing in every prior contemporary diaspora-spirituality engagement with the term Hotep but apparently wasn't: "Hetep is the name of a Divinity. There's a male deity named Hetep and a female Divinity named Hetepet. So when people say HP or Hotep and so forth and you even hear fools talking about Hotep people like that's a derogatory term, it is the name of divinity." He goes to the Pyramid Texts to demonstrate — Pepi I's father is Anchef, his mother is Hetepet, and the male Divinity Hetep is documented in the Papyrus of Ani Plate 33-34 vignette of the three Pouti deities. The primary-source documentation is mainstream Egyptological material. The contemporary Black-cultural slur-use of Hotep is operating against a deity-name without knowing it. Practitioners using Hotep as greeting have been operating with a deity-name without knowing the deity-pair grounding.

The Live Wire

First wire (obvious): The contemporary slur-use of Hotep is built on ignorance of the term's primary-source grounding. The cooption could have been pre-empted with even minimal Egyptological scholarship.
Second wire (deeper): Cultural-recovery work has been operating downstream of vocabulary-loss for so long that even the foundational vocabulary itself has become unrecoverable without explicit primary-source-anchor pedagogical interventions. The recovery requires not just rebuilding practice but rebuilding the primary-source connections that the practice-vocabulary names.
Third wire (uncomfortable): Diaspora-spirituality practitioners using Hotep as casual greeting may have been operating cosmologically-recklessly — invoking a deity-name without the architectural understanding the invocation requires. The casualness is not just cultural-aesthetic; it has operational consequences in the deity-engagement architecture the tradition holds.

Open question: What other contemporary diaspora-spirituality vocabulary has primary-source architectural-grounding that contemporary practitioners do not have access to? The systematic cross-referencing of contemporary practitioner-vocabulary against primary-source Egyptological, Yoruba, Akan, and Vodun ethnographic and archaeological documentation would surface a much larger inventory of architecturally-loaded vocabulary being operated without the architecture.
