Mekrawo — The Everyday Farewell That Preserves the Cosmological Architecture

The Capture

Reading the Okra Okraa Course Week 1 (lines 953-964), I hit the etymological claim that landed harder than I expected. The standard Akan farewell Ma Krawo — "I leave you" — used in everyday goodbyes for as long as Akan has been spoken — is the same Kra-root as the pre-incarnation Sunsum-spirit-takes-leave-of-Inyamewa-after-receiving-Okra scene. The cosmological architecture is preserved IN the everyday language. People are saying it every day without knowing what they're saying.

What landed: the word krawo in goodbye and the word Kra in soul are operationally the same word. Every Akan person performing every goodbye is performing — at the linguistic-cosmological level — the act of "I leave you (in the way the spirit leaves the divine assembly after receiving its assignment)." The cosmology is alive in the speech-substrate of every ordinary day.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): Etymological curiosity — interesting that the farewell and the soul-name share a root.
• Second wire (deeper): Cosmological architectures don't have to be preserved in formal religious texts — they can be preserved in everyday speech-acts that get performed continuously without conscious cosmological awareness. The cosmology is hiding in plain sight in the goodbye. Every speaker is a transmission-vehicle whether they know it or not.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): Most contemporary English-language speech-acts have been stripped of any cosmological substrate. When I say "goodbye" (etymologically "God be with you") I am performing a stripped-down formal residue of what was once an active cosmological-blessing. The Akan farewell still does the cosmological work. The English farewell does not. The language we speak shapes what cosmology can continue operating through our daily speech.
