How "Yogi" Became "420": A Category Falling Through Three Floors

The Capture

The modern Hindi slang cās-sau-bīs jog — the "420 yogi," the charlatan, the fraud — comes from section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (cheating, fraudulent impersonation), under which returned-prince "yogis" were prosecuted in the nineteenth century.¹ And White's whole book shows what yogi once meant: the master of death and bodies, the kingmaker, the divine power, the yogi-pratyakṣa that was the supreme valid cognition in Indian epistemology. Watch the fall: a yogi was a master (Pāśupata aiśvarya), then a "disreputable vagrant" (1891 census), then a Penal Code section number (420), then street slang for a cheat. The same word, three floors down.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): "Yogi" became a slur — a sad decline.
• Second wire (deeper): The decline is legible in the etymology itself — you can read the entire marginalization of the yogi (master → vagrant → criminal → fraud) in the genealogy of one slang term, because the degradation of a word is the readable fossil of the marginalization of the figure it named. The British Penal Code section number became the people's word for "fake holy man," which means the colonial legal degradation was absorbed into the vernacular — the people took the state's criminalization and made it their own slang.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): And at the very moment "yogi" was falling to "420," the word "yoga" was rising to global prestige. The practice ascended as the practitioner descended. We revere "yoga" and (in India) mock the "yogi" — the same root, split into a prestige-word and a slur, because the West kept the disembodied practice and the disreputable agent was left behind to rot into slang.
