Essay Seed: The Right Hemisphere as the Organ of the Soul

The Capture

The piece nobody has written yet because they'd need to have read Kalsched's Trauma and the Soul (the binocular two-worlds metapsychology, the soul exiled by trauma) and McGilchrist's The Master and His Emissary (the right hemisphere as the master that knows living wholes, the left as the emissary that usurps) in the same week is: the right hemisphere is the organ of the soul — and a left-hemisphere-dominated civilization is one that has lost its soul not metaphorically but neurologically, and pathologizes everyone who still reports it.

• First wire: Kalsched + McGilchrist agree the modern world over-relies on the left/analytic mode and starves the right/relational-numinous mode.
• Second wire: The deeper claim is the equation: what Kalsched calls "the soul" (the living, embodied, relational, meaning-bearing, mytho-poetic capacity) and what McGilchrist calls "the right hemisphere's mode of attention" (the live, embodied, contextual, metaphor-loving, whole-knowing world) may be the same thing described in two registers — spiritual and neuroanatomical. Trauma damages/blocks the right hemisphere (Kalsched's tentative hypothesis); the modern left-dominant culture also starves it; therefore the trauma survivor and the modern secular person suffer the same loss — the soul/right-hemisphere going dark — and the religious instinct (the page) goes unfed because its organ has been demoted.

The honest essay doesn't claim McGilchrist proves the soul; it claims the soul and the right hemisphere are the same capacity, and lets the metaphysics stay open.

The angle nobody's written: not "we're too left-brained" (cliché) but "the soul has an organ, the organ has been demoted, and the demotion is why a whole civilization can't feed its religious instinct or believe its own mystics."
