You Are Draining by Default

The Capture

Writing the Five Vāyus page, one detail wouldn't let go. The body has a downward wind — apāna — that governs excretion and ejaculation, the outward-and-downward losses. And it's the resting direction. Left alone, the body leaks downward; the default current is loss. The upward wind, udāna — the one that carries speech and the last breath out the top — has to be deliberately cultivated. Everything the tradition calls "the work" is the reversal: overriding the drain with the lift, against the grain of what the body does on its own. What landed was the flip of "natural." We treat the resting state as neutral, even good. The vāyu system says the resting state is a slow leak — that you are draining by default, essence flowing down and out, and the only question is whether you ever learn to feel the upward wind and reverse the direction you've been running your whole life.

The Live Wire

  • First wire (obvious): It's a yogic claim about semen-retention and breath-direction — esoteric physiology, take it or leave it.
  • Second wire (deeper): It's a claim about defaults in general. The resting state of almost any system — attention, energy, discipline, money, care — is dissipation, not neutrality. "Doing nothing" isn't holding steady; it's leaking. The shape of all serious practice is the same: reverse a downward default that feels like rest, against the grain.
  • Third wire (uncomfortable): Most of my life is apāna. The reflexive scroll, the easy discharge of attention, the path of least resistance that feels like rest — that's the leak, running by default, and I've been calling it normal because it is normal. The resting state is the slow drain.

The wire that holds: the default is dissipation, and "rest" is often a leak wearing rest's clothes.

The Connection It Makes

Extends The Five Vāyus (apāna-down vs udāna-up) and the Bicameral Body (reverse the default downward flow). Pulls against any framing of "rest" as neutral baseline — connects to behavioral entropy / the second-law-of-discipline idea that systems decay toward dissipation without input. Touches operator self-regulation (the reflexive discharge is the enemy).

What It Could Become

Essay seed: "The Slow Leak: Why 'Rest' Is the Default Drain, Not the Neutral Baseline" — using the apāna/udāna reversal as the spine for an argument that the resting state of attention, energy, and discipline is dissipation, and that all practice is the cultivated reversal of a downward default that masquerades as rest.

Open question: Is the felt phenomenon real even if the cosmology is a frame? When a practitioner "reverses the downward current," is something genuinely happening (a re-direction of arousal/attention) under the metaphysical description — and does naming it as a specific wind (not "relax") make it more operable?

Concept page: possibly "Dissipation as Default" (cross-domain) if the second-law-of-discipline framing holds across enough domains.
