Read the whole Chinese spycraft tradition and the spies almost disappear behind the desires. Every technique — the beauty sent into the palace, the gold pressed on the prime minister, the ruinous canal the enemy is talked into digging, the omen faked to steel your own troops — rests on one prior assumption the texts state out loud: desires are Heaven-given, innate, and therefore reliable. You do not break a man by learning a secret. You break him by knowing what he wants and arranging for him to have it.
That flips the modern picture of intelligence as a collection problem (get the document, intercept the signal). Here the document is almost beside the point. The Yi Chou-shu, the Tao Te Ching, Pao P'u-tzu on how drink dissolves judgment — these are the foundational intelligence texts, because the whole apparatus is downstream of a theory of appetite.
